EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER — Brain Salad Surgery (1973-2010) RM | SHM-CD | Two Version | FLAC (image+.tracks+.cue), lossless
Emerson, Lake & Palmer's most successful and well-realized album (after their first), and their most ambitious as a group, as well as their loudest, Brain Salad Surgery was also the most steeped in electronic sounds of any of their records. The main focus, thanks to the three-part "Karn Evil 9," is sci-fi rock, approached with a volume and vengeance that stretched the art rock audience's tolerance to its outer limit, but also managed to appeal to the metal audience in ways that little of Trilogy did. Indeed, "Karn Evil 9" is the piece and the place where Keith Emerson and his keyboards finally matched in both music and flamboyance the larger-than-life guitar sound of Jimi Hendrix. This also marked the point in the group's history in which they brought in their first outside creative hand, in the guise of ex-King Crimson lyricist Pete Sinfield. He'd been shopping around his first solo album and was invited onto the trio's new Manticore label, and also asked in to this project as Lake's abilities as a lyricist didn't seem quite up to the 20-minute "Karn Evil 9" epic that Emerson had created as an instrumental. Sinfield's resulting lyrics for "Karn Evil 9: First Impression" and "Karn Evil 9: Third Impression," while not up to the standard of his best Crimson work, were better than anything the group had to work with previously -- he was also responsible for Emerson's choice of title, persuading the keyboardist that the music he'd come up with was more evocative of a carnival and fantasy than the pure science fiction concept that Emerson had started with. And Greg Lake pulled out all the stops with his heaviest singing voice in handling them, coming off a bit like Peter Gabriel in the process. And amid Carl Palmer's prodigious drumming, it was all a showcase for Emerson, who employed more keyboards and more sounds here -- including electronic voices -- than had previously been heard on one of their records. The songs (except for the light-hearted throwaway "Benny the Bouncer") are also among their best work -- the group's arrangement of Sir Charles Hubert Parry's setting of William Blake's "Jerusalem" manages to be reverent yet rocking (a combination that got it banned by the BBC for potential "blasphemy"), while Emerson's adaptation of Alberto Ginastera's music in "Tocatta" outstrips even "The Barbarian" and "Knife Edge" from the first album as a distinctive and rewarding reinterpretation of a piece of serious music. Lake's "Still...You Turn Me On," the album's obligatory acoustic number, was his last great ballad with the group, possessing a melody and arrangement sufficiently pretty to forgive the presence of the rhyming triplet "everyday a little sadder/a little madder/someone get me a ladder." And the sound quality was stunning, and the whole album represented a high point that the trio would never again achieve, or even aspire to -- after this, each member started to go his own way in terms of creativity and music. EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER — Works Volume 1 (1977-2010) 2CD | RM | SHM-CD | Two Version | FLAC (image+.tracks+.cue), lossless
Though no one talked about it at the time of its release, this album reflected a growing split within the group. Originally, the trio's members, tired of sublimating their musical identities within the context of ELP, each intended to do a solo album of his own. Reason prevailed, however, probably aided by the group's awareness that the combined sales of the solo albums issued by the five members of Yes the previous year were a fraction of the sales of Yes' most recent records. The result was this double LP; essentially three solo sides and one group side, it is the most complex and demanding of the group's albums. Keith Emerson's "Piano Concerto" is on the level of a good music-student piece, without much original language. Where Emerson, in conjunction with his conductor and co-orchestrator, John Mayer, succeeds admirably is in writing beautiful virtuoso passages for the piano. Greg Lake's romantic songs mark the final flowering of his work in this vein -- and perhaps its going to seed, since "C'est la Vie," the featured single, says little that "Still...You Turn Me On," from their previous album, didn't say better and shorter. Carl Palmer's side is the most accessible of the three solo sides for casual rock listeners, rocking hard on the classical adaptations and featuring Joe Walsh on lead guitar for one song. The group's two tracks, "Fanfare for the Common Man" and "Pirates," cover a lot of old ground, albeit in ornate and stylish fashion. Having used Copland's "Hoedown" as a concert showstopper for four years, the trio takes "Fanfare" to new heights of indulgence, and it actually works, up to a point -- like CCR's extended version of "Heard It Through the Grapevine," this is just a little too much of a good thing. EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER — Works Volume 2 (1977-2010) RM | SHM-CD | Two Version | FLAC (image+.tracks+.cue), lossless
After the rather dull Works, Vol. 1, the highly underrated Works, Vol. 2 is a godsend. Works, Vol. 1 took their pompous, bombastic, keyboard-driven prog rock epics to the limit; had it been stripped of its excesses and coupled with the strongest cuts from Works, Vol. 2, the band may have had an enormous success with critics and fans alike. Volume 2's brief, eclectic compositions cover an array of musical styles, combining stimulating originals and handsomely orchestrated renditions of "Maple Leaf Rag," "Honky Tonk Train Blues," and "Show Me the Way to Go Home." Lake peppers the tunes with guitar and bass flourishes, resulting in some of his most challenging instrumental work, and both he and Palmer deliver incredibly strong performances. Meanwhile,Peter Sinfield contributes some of his most mature and accomplished lyrics. Emerson's work is solid and creative, but sounds a bit dated, which is part of why the band couldn't endure. Unlike some ELP albums, Volume 2's brief pieces sustain interest; there really isn't a weak tune in the set. The five instrumentals are highlighted by two short prog rock tunes, including the jazzy "Bullfrog," which features Lake's brief jazz bass solo and Palmer's fluid, versatile drumming. "Barrelhouse Shake-down" and "Maple Leaf Rag" showcase Emerson's superb ragtime and barrelhouse piano playing, and Palmer's jazz fusion/marching band piece, "Close But Not Touching," features horns and Lake's psychedelic electric guitar lines. The vocal pieces are equally interesting. "Brain Salad Surgery" is progressive jazz-rock that bears some resemblance to King Crimson's "Cat Food," unsurprising since each features Lake singing Sinfield's lyrics. And, of course, there is the hit "I Believe in Father Christmas," a beautiful Lake/Sinfield composition that highlights Lake's strong voice and vibrant acoustic guitar. David Ross Smith

EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER — Black Moon (1992-2010) RM | SHM-CD | Two Version | FLAC (image+.tracks+.cue), lossless
Returning to the studio after a 14-year layoff, Emerson, Lake & Palmer stripped down their sound and amped up their attack for 1992's BLACK MOON. Its closest sonic cousin is the mid-'80s album Emerson and Lake recorded with drummer Cozy Powell. Sharp digital electronics replace Keith Emerson's classic analog synthesizer sounds, and the fanciful, classical-influenced prog-rock epics of yore are streamlined into a more accessible mainstream rock format, though some traces of the trio's vintage flash still pop up. CHRIS SQUIRE — Fish Out of Water (1975-2014) RM | SHM-CD | Serie Yes Solos Collection | Two Version | FLAC (image+.tracks+.cue), lossless
Yes-like in every possible aspect, Chris Squire's Fish out of Water is an album that's typical of his band's progressive formula: softened keyboard extensions à la Patrick Moraz, steady yet atmospheric percussion work from Bill Bruford, and a smattering of flute and saxophone that accompanies a small orchestra, which includes effective horn and harp work. Squire's guitar playing is standard, coming to life the most on "Silently Falling" and "Lucky Seven," with the former boosted by a rather dazzling synthesizer solo from Moraz. Even though there are few surprises laid out on the album's five tracks, the elemental composition of pure '70s progressive rock is strewn across each song from start to finish. Squire even sounds like Jon Anderson, especially on "Hold out Your Hand," and each of the song's melodies cater to Squire's vocal ascent. Fish out of Water harbors some firm instrumental and vocal cross-breeding while remaining well within the prog rock norm. Mike DeGagne

DAVID GILMOUR — Luck And Strange (2024) Blu-spec CD2 | Two Version | FLAC (image+.tracks+.cue), lossless
Luck and Strange is David Gilmour's fifth solo record and only his third of the 21st century. The Pink Floyd guitarist clearly understands his life's privilege; he has made some of rock's most memorable music, toured its biggest stages, and been named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He could easily coast along for the duration of his career. Instead, he has continued to tour, collaborated widely, advocated for numerous just causes, and donated the money from selling his home and guitars to charity. If he wants to make just one album per decade, he's earned the right. Appearing nine years after 2015's Rattle That Lock, Luck and Strange brings together a supporting cast that's both fresh and familiar, and also familial. To produce, he sought a more contemporary presence, Charlie Andrew (Alt-J), to augment veteran players like Guy Pratt (bass) and Steve Gadd (drums). Additionally, his daughter, singer and harpist Romany Gilmour, plays a significant role here and even takes the lead on standout "Between Two Points," a cover of the Montgolfier Brothers' 1999 dream pop song. As on all his records since the '90s, Gilmour's wife, Polly Samson, serves as lyricist and direct collaborator. The overriding tone of Luck and Strange is ruminative, though not overly melancholic, with richly imagined songs that explore uncertain futures ("A Single Spark"), nostalgia ("Sings"), marriage ("Dark and Velvet Nights"), and a generation's halcyon days (the title cut, which is built around a pre-existing 2007 jam with late Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright). The arrangements, which frequently include orchestral and choral elements, feel fresher and nimbler than on his previous set, balancing out some of the album's introspection. And the youthful presence of Romany's (as well as his son Gabriel's) vocals is a boon, lending to the largely collaborative feel. Still, it's undeniably a Gilmour album, woven through with the elegant, lyrical guitar playing and haunted vocals that are his signature. Timothy Monger

Musically, this is wildly ambitious. The group's sound has naturally evolved, but it pays no heed to modern production values. The album's sound is analog. The number of styles the band move through on Transiberiana is quite astonishing -- they take deep dives into modern prog, avant-garde, atmospheric and experimental rock, classical, jazz, and even have an AOR moment or two. Opener "Stelle Sulla Terra" is almost suite-like in construction. It commences with a three-note circular keyboard vamp with jagged synths coming in to add a pulse, then alternates between quickly shifting time signatures, pastoral passages, and finally, D'Alessio's balladic vocals. As the music turns itself inside-out, colliding and dove-tailing through metallic futurism, Zappa-esque arpeggios, and riff-enhanced rock, he responds with recitative shouting and crooning. "La Discesa Dal Treno" offers dreamy piano and powerful guitar riffs before fierce lead guitar runs that underscore passionate vocals, while a tender jazz piano melody adds tension and later, balance. The synth in "Lo Sciamano" sounds like Vangelis and Keith Emerson struggling to inhabit the same body before King Crimson-esque guitars and thrumming drums add heft, and a rootsy acoustic piano delivers blues chords and post-bop arpeggios as D'Alessio croons. "Il Grande Bianco" begins with a guitar pattern reminiscent of '80s-era King Crimson (think Discipline and Beat), with horn and string sounds emerging overture-like to introduce the first part of the melody. Over its six minutes, it travels through prog and classical music, harmonious cinematic tropes, and knotty, cascading prog. The set closes with two bonus cuts, live versions of two Banco classics cut at 2018's Festival Prog Di Veruno -- "Metamorfosi" and "Il Ragno" -- which reveal this version of Banco can hold their own on-stage. Transiberiana is far better than almost any fan would expect from a band continuing their exploratory quest for musical discovery and expansion more than 25 years after their last effort.

CAMEL — Stationary Traveller (1984-2009) RM | Serie Camel SHM-CD Paper Jacket Collection – 11 | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Although Stationary Traveller is a concept album, it musically falls into line with its predecessor The Single Factor, which found Camel trying to refashion themselves as the Alan Parsons Project. Where The Single Factor suffered from Camel's attempts to write pop hooks, Stationary Traveller finds the band breaking down the barriers, opening up their relatively concise songs with long, atmospheric instrumental passages. The album's lyrics, which were written by Susan Hoover, is about the divided Berlin and its political, emotional and physical divides. Often, the lyrics and music – which work as individual entities – don't quite work together, since they follow different emotional directions, yet the record remains a worthwhile listen, especially since it features Andy Latimer on pan flute. BRIAN ENO — Here Come the Warm Jets (1974-2004) RM | Original Masters Series | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Eno's solo debut, Here Come the Warm Jets, is a spirited, experimental
collection of unabashed pop songs on which Eno mostly reprises his Roxy
Music role as "sound manipulator," taking the lead vocals but leaving
much of the instrumental work to various studio cohorts (including
ex-Roxy mates Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay, plus Robert Fripp and
others). Eno's compositions are quirky, whimsical, and catchy, his
lyrics bizarre and often free-associative, with a decidedly dark bent in
their humor ("Baby's on Fire," "Dead Finks Don't Talk"). Yet the album
wouldn't sound nearly as manic as it does without Eno's wildly
unpredictable sound processing; he coaxes otherworldly noises and
textures from the treated guitars and keyboards, layering them in
complex arrangements or bouncing them off one another in a weird
cacophony. Avant-garde yet very accessible, Here Come the Warm Jets
still sounds exciting, forward-looking, and densely detailed, revealing
more intricacies with every play. Steve Huey

DZYAN – Mandala (2010) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
The prevailing style was still the Canterbury Fusion of that first LP, with Gerd Ehrmann's frenetic saxophone the primary instrument on most tracks, and percussionist Jochen Leuschner providing the bluesy lead vocals. But the ace up their collective sleeve was new guitarist Eddy Marron, recently enlisted but already making an impact, even in a relative supporting role.
Under his galvanizing influence the music was beginning to show a harder edge, in tracks like "Steel's Electric": an obvious signpost toward the MAHAVISHNU intensity of the "Time Machine" sessions. Listening to Marron's absolutely torrid solo at the end of "Dragonsong" (a holdover song from the first album) it's easy to imagine the jaws of his bandmates falling to the studio floor in flabbergasted awe, as the guitarist shredded his fretboard into ragged tatters.
In this track and elsewhere you can hear the later, psychedelicized Dzyan trying to break free of its Jazz Rock shell, especially when Marron begins strumming his beloved Turkish saz, in the song of the same name. The more exploratory instrumental jams show their age best, and the band itself no doubt felt the same. After this rehearsal 'concert' the way ahead must have seemed clear: ditch the singer and the sax, and continue as a trio (but with a more sympathetic drummer).
The title track is an odd droning entr'acte from bassist Reinhard Karwatky (recording date unknown), and the incomplete "Celestial City" is the only selection actually performed on stage. It was included here as a bonus track, but really the entire album is a welcome bonus, 38-years late but worth the wait. progarchives.con
