GEORGE GERSHWIN : The Complete George Gershwin Porgy And Bess (1956-1996) RM | 2CD MONO | Serie Mastersonic, ベツレヘム名盤マスター・トランスファー・コレクション – 11 | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

The Bethlehem label didn't make it out of the '50s before folding, and one of the reasons why is the ambitious yet misguided George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, a three-LP box set that represents a complete recording of the Gershwin classic (with narration and sound effects). Bethlehem certainly had the talent to pull it off -- appearing on the label, and this production, are Mel Tormé, Duke Ellington & His Orchestra, Johnny Hartman, Bob Dorough, Betty Roche, Frances Faye, and minor period stars including vocalist Frank Rosolino, bandleader Stan Levey, and arranger Russ Garcia. And long-playing versions of theatrical productions were huge in the mid-'50s (a few sold millions of copies). The most popular of these, however, were simply easy-to-digest highlights LPs that never attempted to present the complete production. This version is a gargantuan two hours long, difficult to sit through even if every performance was stellar (and, unfortunately, that's far from the case). The recording makes a virtue of being hip, primarily through the narration of Al "Jazzbo" Collins, a radio DJ who may have been hip for the times but whose counterfeit excitement and perfect diction make the proceedings sound like a period newsreel. ("Watch out, Porgy, here comes that mean Sportin' Life!") Tormé, as the most popular vocalist on the label, was a shoe-in for the role of Porgy, despite Johnny Hartman's clear superiority, and Frances Faye received the role of Bess despite Betty Roche's ability to handle the role much better. Those mistakes are compounded by Russ Garcia's period arrangements (the Ellington group makes only one appearance) and some decidedly subpar performances from Frank Rosolino early in the program. Still, it has to be admitted that a highlights compilation of this record would sparkle very brightly, driven by Mel Tormé's swinging "I've Got Plenty o' Nuttin'" with a super-enthused backing chorus, George Kirby's "It Ain't Necessarily So," and Betty Roche's reprise of "Summertime" during the second half. HERBIE MANN — Herbie Mann Plays (1956-2001) RM | Serie Bethlehem Archives | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Flutist Herbie Mann's first recording as a leader (seven selections from 1954 originally on a 10" LP plus four others cut in 1956) has been reissued on CD with three alternate takes added on. Even back in 1954, Mann (who doubles here on flute and alto flute) had his own sound. The music (featuring either Benny Weeks or Joe Puma on guitar in a piano-less quartet) is essentially straight-ahead bop and finds Mann playing quite melodically and with swing. This set is a good example of Herbie Mann's early style before he started exploring various types of world musics. Scott Yanow

CHET BAKER — Chet Baker Plays the Best of Lerner & Loewe (1956-2013) RM | Serie Original Jazz Classics Remasters | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This is one of the last Chet Baker (trumpet) long players recorded in the States prior to the artist relocating to Europe in the early '60s. Likewise, the eight-tune collection was the final effort issued during his brief association with the Riverside Records imprint. The project was undoubtedly spurred on by the overwhelming success of the Shelly Manne-led combo that interpreted titles taken from the score to My Fair Lady (1956). In addition to becoming an instant classic, Manne's LP was also among of the best-selling jazz platters of all time. While Baker and crew may have gained their inspiration from Manne, these readings are comparatively understated. That said, the timelessness of the melodies, coupled with the assembled backing aggregate, make Chet Baker Plays the Best of Lerner and Loewe (1959) a memorable concept album. Although Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe had produced a number of well-received and luminous entries, half of the material on this disc is derived from My Fair Lady (1956). "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" is given a languid torch song treatment that spirals around Baker's cool inconspicuous leads, featuring some equally sublime contributions from Zoot Simms (alto sax/tenor sax). This contrasts the resilient and free-spirited waltz on "I Could Have Danced All Night," which benefits from Herbie Mann's (flute) breezy counterpoint and solo. Bill Evans (piano) also lays down some tasty licks over top of the solid rhythm of Earl May (bass) and Clifford Jarvis (drums). "On the Street Where You Live" is a highlight, as the personnel take the time to stretch out and thoroughly examine with some key counterpoint between Baker's honey-toned horn and Pepper Adams' (baritone sax) husky and ample involvement. Of the non-My Fair Lady sides, "The Heather on the Hill" and a superior "Almost Like Being in Love" hail from Brigadoon (1947), while the scintillating and smoldering "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" comes from Gigi (1958). Not to be missed is "I Talk to the Trees," with an unhurried and evenly measured tempo that is coupled to Baker's austere, yet rich and purposeful lines. Lindsay Planer

CLIFFORD BROWN – Brownie : The Complete EmArcy Recordings of Clifford Brown (1989) RM | 11xCD BOX-SET | MONO | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Although undoubtedly an expensive acquisition, this ten-CD set is perfectly done and contains dozens of gems. The remarkable but short-lived trumpeter Clifford Brown has the second half of his career fully documented (other than his final performance) and he is showcased in a wide variety of settings. The bulk of the numbers are of Brownie's quintet with co-leader and drummer Max Roach, either Harold Land or Sonny Rollins on tenor, pianist Richie Powell, and bassist George Morrow (including some previously unheard alternate takes), but there is also much more. Brown stars at several jam sessions (including a meeting with fellow trumpeters Clark Terry and Maynard Ferguson), accompanies such singers as Dinah Washington, Helen Merrill, and Sarah Vaughan, and is backed by strings on one date. Everything is here, including classic versions of "Parisian Thoroughfare," "Joy Spring," "Daahoud," "Coronado," a ridiculously fast "Move," "Portrait of Jenny," "Cherokee," "Sandu," "I'll Remember April," and "What Is This Thing Called Love?" Get this set while it stays in print. Scott Yanow   Tracklist + Credits :

CLIFFORD BROWN – Joy Spring (2005) 4xCD BOX-SET | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Joy Spring is a four-CD, budget-priced box set from the folks at Proper in the United Kingdom. This is a pretty handsome overview that touches on all aspects of Clifford Brown's mighty but tragically brief career. Disc one, "Dial B Fr Beauty" contains sides he cut in 1952 as a member of Chris Powell and the Blue Flames; documents from his stint with Tadd Dameron; tracks from a short-lived quintet with Lou Donaldson, Elmo Hope, Percy Heath, and Philly Joe Jones in 1953, and sides recorded when he was part of J.J. Johnson's Septet -- all these sides virtually chronicle Brown's ascent into the jazz world and serve, so to speak, as a showcase for the first three sides he cut on his own, in a band that included Charlie Rouse, Art Blakey, John Lewis, Gigi Gryce, and Heath, with material arranged by Quincy Jones. Standout cuts are "Wail Bait," and "Hymn of the Orient," as well as Dameron's "Choose Now." Disc two, entitled "Conception," begins with Brown's own sextet and his versions of "Cherokee," and "Brownie Eyes." Later in '53, Brown played with Art Farmer in Sweden, and with a European orchestra that included a number of stalwarts like Walter Williams, Gryce, and Pierre Michelot, with Jones writing the charts. But the coolest stuff here are the sides cut with the Brown/Gryce sextet and octet, these also commence disc three, entitled "Clifford's Axe," which straddles September of 1953 to October of that same year. Disc three is rounded out with the first-ever-performances-on-record of the Clifford Brown-Max Roach quintet as they cut "All God's Chillun Got Rhythm" and "Sunset." The final CD in this package is devoted almost exclusively to this last group of musicians -- the Clifford Brown-Max Roach quintet -- documenting the various phases they went through in 1954. From "Dahoud" and "Delilah" to "Jor Du" and their stellar read of "Parisian Thoroughfare." The box set closes with a cut from Sarah Vaughan backed by Brown, Roy Haynes, Paul Quinichette, Herbie Mann, Jimmy Jones, Ernie Wilkins, and Joe Benjamin, on a lovely version of "You're Not the Kind" with a sweet and moving Brown solo. This is a fine introduction to Brown, nicely priced, with decent sound, and it makes a great companion to the excellent Emarcy LPs of the Brown-Roach bands.

CHET BAKER - Chet Baker Introduces Johnny Pace Accompanied By The Chet Baker Quintet (1958-1990) RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The liner notes begin with this sentence: "It's hard to think of this album as anything short of the first major step towards real success for the exciting and appealing young singer being introduced here." Oh, well. The fact that Pace ended up, at best, a minor footnote in jazz history doesn't detract at all from the significant pleasures to be had on his 1958 debut. Supported by the Chet Baker Quintet (which at this point included flutist Herbie Mann, pianist Joe Berl, bassist Jimmie Burke, and, depending on the recording date, either Ed Thigpen or Philly Joe Jones on drums), Pace delivers a winning program of standards in a style that owes an obvious debt to Frank Sinatra, but distinguishes itself by means of fruitier tone and an occasionally pronounced vibrato. His renditions of "The Way You Look Tonight" and "It Might as Well Be Spring" are both completely charming, and the band supports him beautifully -- special kudos go to Mann, whose dry, swinging flute tone complement's Pace's voice perfectly. Recommended.  by Rick Anderson

HERBIE MANN - Muscle Shoals Nitty Gritty (1969-2013) RM / Jazz Best Collection 1000 - 9 / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Although it followed a formula similar to the hugely successful Memphis Underground, Muscle Shoals Nitty Gritty stands on its own as a superb example of the fusion of jazz with '60s soul music, a genre that Herbie Mann stood atop at the time of its release. In addition to Mann band members Roy Ayers, Miroslav Vitous and Bruno Carr, the recording employs the Muscle Shoals rhythm section that had played together on numerous soul hits of the '60s, including those of Aretha Franklin. Standout cuts include the title track, with the its horn-driven groove; Sharrock's "Blind Willy," featuring a jew's-harp hook; and a smoldering version of Lennon & McCartney's "Come Together." Throughout the album, Mann's solos wail through the upper register of the flute, while Ayers finds interestingly funky passages on the vibes. by Jim Newsom

HERBIE MANN – Stone Flute (1970-2013) RM | Jazz Best Collection 1000 - 10 | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The 1970 record buyer who came across Stone Flute expecting a typical Herbie Mann album in the Memphis Underground vein was in for a big surprise. Instead of funk, there was moodiness. Instead of a groove, there were violins, viola and cello. The feeling was one of floating in space, with the flute sailing freely over the William Fischer arrangements, like a Miles Davis trumpet solo of this, the Bitches Brew era. This is a totally atypical Herbie Mann recording, but one which rewards repeated listening. Jim Newsom

HERBIE MANN - Push Push (1971-2014) RM / Jazz Best Collection 1000 - 1 / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Flutist Herbie Mann opened up his music on this date for Push Push (and during the era) toward R&B, rock and funk music. The results were generally appealing, melodic and danceable. On such songs as "What's Going On," "Never Can Say Goodbye," "What'd I Say" and the title cut, Mann utilizes an impressive crew of musicians, which include guitarist Duane Allman and keyboardist Richard Tee. by Scott Yanow

HERBIE MANN - America / Brasil (1997) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

America/Brasil is a rollicking, celebratory album that keeps Herbie Mann on the winning streak he started with the release of Peace Pieces in 1995. Recorded during a week of concerts to mark his 65th birthday in April 1995, this disc is much stronger than its immediate predecessor, Celebration, also taken from the same week of live concert performances at New York's Blue Note jazz club. The material here is superb, and the playing top-notch. As the title implies, the emphasis here is on Mann's Brazilian side, but there are touches of the non-Brazilian with Bill Evans' "Peri's Scope" and Miles Davis' "All Blues." "Summertime" is recast in an Afro-Cuban mode with Paquito D'Rivera sharing the solo space on alto sax. However, lengthy Brazilian showstoppers are placed at the beginning, middle, and end of this wonderful disc. The opening "Keep the Spirits Singing" is propelled by the polyrhythmic pulse of percussionists Cyro Baptista and "Café," and the 17-minute title track finale features trumpeters Randy Brecker and Claudio Roditi, trombonist Jim Pugh, and guitarist Romero Lubambo. Even with the all-star cast assembled for this special week of concerts, it's Herbie Mann himself whose playing shines the brightest throughout this recording, celebrating his past and affirming his place in the present as the finest flutist working in jazz. by Jim Newsom

HERBIE MANN / PHIL WOODS - Beyond Brooklyn (2004) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Flutist Herbie Mann's last record date brought him back to his roots, playing bop-oriented jazz. Actually, he co-led the session with an old friend, altoist Phil Woods, who he did not have many opportunities to play with after the 1950s. The results are delightful, with some bop standards, a few Latin tunes, and some basic originals comprising the program. The instrumentation changes from track to track, with two different rhythm sections being used and guest appearances from Gil Goldstein on accordion and trombonist Jay Ashby. Mann, who spontaneously recorded the closing "Time After Time" at a slightly later date when he was already seriously ill, sounds in prime form throughout this happy set. His final musical chapter is well worth savoring. by Scott Yanow

HERBIE MANN - Introducing Herbie Mann (2006) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Herbie Mann was no purist when it came to material to use as basis for his improvisation. He fused Samba, Soul or Southern Rock into his jazz, he covered hits of the day and he even released singles. It is an error to dismiss him as just a popularizer, he was a pioneer of fusion.
This compilation tries to embrace his whole spectrum from the early 60s Brazilian influences via his Southern Soul period to the mid/late 70s world music approach.
The selection is mostly of his best known tracks. The title "Introducing..." is adequate and this is a really good introduction to the Man(n) and recommended to those who are not too familiar with his discography. by Roxanne Walsh

TERRY MOREL - Songs of a Woman in Love (1956-1992) The Supreme Collection Of Bethlehem 15 / Mp3

Songs of a Woman in Love is a quintessential Bethlehem label release -- a smoky, profoundly expressive session bathed in neon tavern light, it's singer Terry Morel's lone release for the label, which seemed to specialize in this kind of one-and-done snapshot of feminine malaise and melancholy. Backed by a trio led by pianist Ralph Sharon and featuring flutist Herbie Mann, Morel's dusky, come-hither vocals mask a deeper emotional turmoil that shades songs like "Too Late Now" and "The Night We Called It a Day." The session is devoid of all traces of the sweetness and innocence that so often define her peers, instead articulating an intimacy and intensity rare in the postwar, pre-feminist '50s. by Jason Ankeny

CHRIS CONNOR - Chris Connor Sings the George Gershwin Almanac of Song (1989) 2CD / FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Most of this highly recommended set is taken from a series of 1957 sessions in which singer Chris Connor exclusively interprets songs of George Gershwin. To fill out the CDs, additional Gershwin cuts from other, otherwise unrelated dates by the vocalist have been added. Connor's cool delivery gives many of the largely familiar songs new life. She is assisted by such fine musicians as trumpeter Joe Newman, tenorman Al Cohn, flutist Herbie Mann, vibraphonist Milt Jackson and pianist Ralph Sharon, who add tasteful and concise solos. Many of the selections were quite rare before this well-conceived and appealing reissue was put together. by Scott Yanow

Nice, more light than emphatic Afro-Latin and jazz mixture by flutist Herbie Mann and composer/vocalist Joao Gilberto from 1977. The two make an effective team, with Gilberto's sometimes sentimental, sometimes impressionistic works effectively supported by Mann's lithe flute solos. by Ron Wynn
