NANCY WILSON — Hello Young Lovers (1962-2013) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Most of Nancy Wilson's '60s releases for Capitol were high quality, including this, her fourth album. Hello Young Lovers contains Wilson's standard program of easy swingers and ballads that show off her impeccable phrasing while sporting George Shearing's luxurious string charts in hits hits like "Little Girl Blue" and "Back in Your Own Backyard." One also hears Wilson's burgeoning talent for vocal drama as she evokes a variety of moods on "Miss Otis Regrets" and "Little Girl Blue." Her seamless blending of Dinah Washington's bluesy delivery and Sarah Vaughan's seraphic tone also emerges as a talent that would fully flower on 1967's Welcome to My Love. For this recording, though, the listening pleasure is found mostly in her signature urbane pop sound. Stephen Cook

STÉPHANE GRAPPELLY – 1935-1940 | The Classics Chronological Series – 708 (1993) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This Classics CD has all of the recordings made under violinist Stephane Grappelli's name during the 1935-1940 period. The earlier selections (with his Hot Four) match his violin with Django Reinhardt's guitar in what was essentially the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. There are also nine duets with Reinhardt; a couple find Grappelli switching to piano. The set concludes in 1940 with Grappelli (in London) leading an octet on two numbers that also feature the young pianist George Shearing. Scott Yanow    Tracklist + Credits :

STÉPHANE GRAPPELLY – 1941-1943 | The Classics Chronological Series – 779 (1994) FLAC (tracks), lossless

This Classics CD reissues some very rare recordings made by violinist Stephane Grappelli: all of his performances as a leader during a difficult three-year period. The violinist had decided to stay in England during World War II (when Django Reinhardt returned to France) and soon had a new group featuring the young pianist George Shearing. This CD has seven sessions with quartets and quintets along with one featuring a larger group that includes other strings and a harp. Although there are vocals on eight of the numbers (by Beryl Davis and Dave Fullerton), the swinging performances and the rarity of the recordings easily compensate. Scott Yanow        Tracklist :

PEGGY LEE / GEORGE SHEARING - Beauty and the Beat! (1959-2003) RM / FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Upon its first release Beauty and the Beat! was billed as a live recording from a Miami convention of disc jockeys. Though Peggy Lee and George Shearing did in fact perform there (and attempts were made to record them for later release), the songs heard on the subsequent LP were recorded in the studio and overdubbed with rather obvious canned applause, announcements, and even post-production echo. Lee and Shearing, who had never recorded before, conceived a set of completely new arrangements that played to their strengths: stately blues and effervescent swing. The best of the former comes on a pair of locale-referencing quasi-blues, "I Lost My Sugar in Salt Lake City" and "You Came a Long Way From St. Louis," both of which Lee and Shearing are able to transform into languorous, respectable torch songs. The usually downcast "Blue Prelude" is actually taken at a laissez faire tempo that Lee treats well, and the original set ends with "Get Out of Town" and "Satin Doll," a pair of bemused, affectionate performances that perfectly suit the pair. Lee and Shearing's only collaboration on record -- though both would occasionally perform together thereafter -- is a supremely chilled session of late-night blues from two masters of the form. by John Bush
