DIZZY GILLESPIE – To Bird With Love (1992) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

To Bird with Love: Live at the Blue Note was taken from a month that Dizzy Gillespie was featured at the Blue Note in New York, virtually at the end of his playing career, the 74-year-old trumpeter is quite erratic on this set of bop standards. However, his supporting cast (heard from in different combinations) includes such major players as altoists Jackie McLean, Antonio Hart and Paquito D'Rivera and tenors Benny Golson, Clifford Jordan and David Sanchez, in addition to a strong trio led by pianist Danílo Perez. The sidemen are in generally fine form and Bobby McFerrin literally came out of the audience to scat on "Oo Pa Pa Da." The good spirits and obvious love that these musicians had for Gillespie make up for his technical lapses. Scott Yanow         Tracklist + Credits :

ANAT COHEN : 2005-2019 (8 Albuns) FLAC (tracks, image+.cue), lossless

Israeli-born saxophonist, clarinetist, and flutist Anat Cohen is an adroit jazz musician with a bent toward sophisticated post-bop, Latin traditions, and layered, modern creative improvisation. Since first emerging in the early 2000s, Cohen has earned praise for her eclectic sound, working alongside her equally gifted siblings trumpeter Avishai Cohen and pianist Yuval Cohen as 3 Cohens, as well as with her Brazilian-influenced Choro Ensemble and as a member of the DIVA big band. However, it's as a leader of her own groups that she has garnered the most acclaim, issuing albums like 2005's Place and Time, 2012's Claroscuro, and 2017's Grammy-nominated Outra Coisa.
From Down There
Born in Tel Aviv in 1975, Cohen grew up in a musical family along with her two brothers, soprano saxophonist Yuval Cohen and trumpeter Avishai Cohen. As a child, she started with clarinet lessons, later adding saxophone while attending the Jaffa Music Centre. After completing her compulsory military service, during which time she played in the Israeli Air Force Big Band, Cohen enrolled at Boston's Berklee College of Music, ultimately graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Professional Music. In the late '90s, she relocated to New York City, where she found work with such luminaries as pianist/composer Pablo Ablanedo (with whom she made her recorded debut on 2001's From Down There), bandleader Duduka Da Fonseca, singer/percussionist Cyro Baptista, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, drummer Louis Hayes, guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, pianist Rachel Z, and many others.
Poetica
As a solo artist, Cohen debuted with 2005's Place and Time, which featured pianist Jason Lindner, bassist Ben Street, and drummer Jeff Ballard. She returned with 2007's Poetica, which again featured Lindner as well as bassist Omer Avital (who also supplied several string quartet arrangements). Also that year, she issued the large ensemble album Noir, which found her backed by the Anzic Orchestra and playing Brazilian-influenced arrangements by Oded Lev-Ari. Cohen then returned to her small group with pianist Lindner, bassist Avital, and drummer Daniel Freedman for 2008's Notes from the Village. Along with her own groups, Cohen was active during this period as a member of the all-female big band DIVA, as well as the Brazilian jazz-influenced Choro Ensemble. She also played and recorded with her siblings, trumpeter Avishai Cohen and pianist Yuval Cohen, in the group 3 Cohens, issuing albums like One, Braid, and Family.
Clarinetwork: Live at the Village Vanguard
In 2010 she delivered the concert album Clarinetwork: Live at the Village Vanguard. With 2012's Claroscuro, Cohen began showcasing her growing interest in various world traditions, including African rhythms, New Orleans Creole traditions, Brazilian samba, and more. It was an approach she continued to explore on her next release, 2015's eclectic, Brazilian choro-infused Luminosa. In 2017, she delivered two collaborative Brazilian-tinged albums: Outra Coisa, a duo album with guitarist Marcello Gonçalves, and Rosa Dos Ventos featuring Trio Brasileiro, both of which earned Grammy nominations. Also that year, she debuted her tentet with Happy Song. The duo concert album Live in Healdsburg, featuring the clarinetist and pianist Fred Hersch, arrived in 2018. Cohen issued the second album with her tentet, Tripple Helix, in 2019. by Matt Collar

Anat Cohen - Place & Time  (2005)

A talented saxophonist and clarinetist originally from Israel, Anat Cohen has strong tones on tenor, soprano and clarinet and is a creative improviser within the modern mainstream of jazz. She contributed six excellent originals to her debut recording including a few wistful ballads and the somewhat heated "87 North." Her clarinet playing on "Veinte Anso," an immediately recognizable Cuban melody taken here as a tango, is charming. Her quartet, which teams her with the versatile and supportive pianist Jason Lindner, is expanded on four numbers that add her brother Avishai Cohen (no relationship to the famous bassist) who contributes some effective trumpet. With the Cohens sharing the front line and Lindner dropping out, they re-create the sound of the Gerry Mulligan Quartet on "As Catch Can" (even if tenor is substituted for Mulligan's baritone). The other songs are generally more exotic, displaying Anat Cohen's interest in Latin music and her Israeli heritage. All in all, this is a very impressive debut. by Scott Yanow

Anat Cohen Tentet – Triple Helix (2019)

A very nice smooth jazz album. With a 10 piece band, it apparently meets the definition of "large" under the rules for the Grammy's "Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album." This small ensemble avoids the overplaying of many different instruments to the point of dissonance often found in large jazz bands. Most pieces are clarinet based, as the instrument of Anat Cohen, the band leader. Each piece feels like it tells a story with different moods. "Triple Helix First" contains a lot of mystery, "Milonga del Ángel" sounds angry at one part, "Triple Helix Anat" is a comedic piece almost Dixieland in nature, while "La Llorona" is as scary as the demon of its namesake. While not a new concept to make a band emulate a train, I feel "Lonesome Train" creates the sound in a unique way, using instruments perhaps not typical for accomplishing this task. The rest of the album is filled in with sweet smooth jazz, right to the end with the short calming "Morning Melody," almost as if we've been listening all night and dawn has come. by Vincent D'Aniello

PAQUITO D'RIVERA - TICO TICO (1989) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Paquito D'Rivera's alto and clarinet skills were ably displayed on this session, which featured him working in Afro-Latin, salsa, funk, swing and hard bop. Compositions ranged from intense, jam-flavored numbers with torrid solos, like "Recife's Blue" and the title tune, to introspective ballads, group pieces with rhythmically explosive sections and numbers displaying classical influences. The unifying force was D'Rivera, who also played tenor, but was most prominent on clarinet, doing both swing-oriented and looser, freer solos. While not as strict a jazz vehicle as his Columbia dates, this session presented a more eclectic, versatile Paquito D'Rivera. by Ron Wynn

PAQUITO D'RIVERA - Havana Cafe (1992) APE (image+.cue), lossless

This excellent all-round session features Paquito D'Rivera on alto, clarinet, and soprano with his sextet, which is comprised of either Fareed Haque or Ed Cherry on guitar, the great pianist Danilo Perez, bassist David Finck, drummer Jorge Rossy, and percussionist Sammy Figueroa. The program has some strong group originals (such as "Havana Cafe," "Jean Pauline," "Who's Smoking?!," and "Bossa do Brooklyn"), and the result is an often-fiery set of modern Afro-Cuban jazz. by Scott Yanow

PAQUITO D'RIVERA - Who's Smoking?! (1991) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The answer to this CD's title is the musicians. The heated bebop-oriented session finds Paquito D'Rivera joined by trumpeter Claudio Roditi, flügelhornist Mark Morganelli, Danilo Perez or Pedrito Lopez on piano, bassist Harvie Swartz, and drummer Al Foster. An extra treat is that veteran tenorman James Moody guests on three of the nine selections, inspiring D'Rivera to be particularly heated. Highlights include exciting versions of "Giant Steps" and "I Mean You," a clarinet-bass duet on "Out of Nowhere," Perez's "You Got It, Diz," and the blazing title cut. Highly recommended. by Scott Yanow

PAQUITO D'RIVERA - La Habana : Rio Conexion (1992-2005) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

La Habana: Rio Conexion is saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera's attempt to bring the gospel of historical bolero to American listeners. These 12 cuts are steeped in the grand Cuban tradition and reinsert its cultural and historical center into a music that has been watered down to the point of being nondescript. But, of course, this is also a jazz recording, and D'Rivera is a jazz musician. The rhythmic and harmonic extrapolations are minimal, however, and focus on the integral form of the music whether it be the album's opening danza, Ernesto Lecuona's "La Comparsa," or the chorinho that closes the proceedings, Pixinguinha's "Segura Ele." In between are wonderfully romantic boleros, ballads of almost unbearable longing. D'Rivera surrounds himself with brilliant players, such as Danílo Perez, Fareed Haque, Pablo Zinger, Johnny Rodriguez, Claudio Roditi, and Jose Madera, to name a few. He also employs a full string section on many tunes. These range from sextets with strings to simple trio pieces, all of them having in common the form of the bolero as it migrated from Havana to Rio and interacted with samba. D'Rivera performs tunes by everyone from Ivan Lins to the great Cuban composers Ignacio Cervantes and Portillo de la Luz. This is an unabashedly romantic recording, which nonetheless possesses serious chops and killer arrangements by the late Chico O'Farrill, Pablo Zinger, and Carlos Franzetti. Highly recommended.

PAQUITO D'RIVERA & THE UNITED NATION ORCHESTRA - A Night in Englewood (1994) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

After Dizzy Gillespie's death in 1991, his colorful Afro-Cuban United Nation Orchestra (which was formed in 1988) was headed by altoist-clarinetist Paquito D'Rivera. With the better-known sidemen on this 1993 CD including first trumpeter Byron Stripling, trombonist Conrad Herwig and tenor saxophonist Mario Rivera, additional solo space was allocated to some of the other talented players as were guest spots for trumpeter Claudio Roditi, trombonist Slide Hampton and vibraphonist Dave Samuels. A Night in Englewood is an easily recommended set. The music is very Latin-oriented and shows that the orchestra had moved away from Gillespie's usual repertoire to exclusively feature originals by bandmembers (including D'Rivera's "I Remember Diz"). Definitely worth investigating. by Scott Yanow

PAQUITO D'RIVERA - Brazilian Dreams (2002) APE (tracks+.cue), lossless

Extraordinary saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer Paquito D'Rivera shows his love for vocal quartet music and Brazilian composers on Brazilian Dreams. As one of the most influential and dynamic musicians of his time, D'Rivera's distinctive command of Afro-Cuban jazz, Brazilian jazz, big band, folklore, and world music has attracted critical acclaim and loyal audiences. Joined by New York Voices and trumpeter Claudio Roditi, among others, D'Rivera's abundant talents and joyous enthusiasm make this "live" concert recording both memorable and inspiring. Ten songs, including such classics by Antonio Carlos Jobim as "Corcovado" and "Desafinado," are elegantly performed alongside two of Luiz Bonfá's Brazilian jazz masterpieces titled "Manha de Carnival" and "Gentle Rain." The ensemble presents these great songs as a medley on this program. D'Rivera's mastery of the clarinet is a sonic joy on "Meu Amigo." He provides spirited accompaniment to the New York Voices' four-part harmony with high-quality improvisation. Additional highlights include Claudio Roditi's composition "Red on Red," which has become a standard in the Brazilian jazz repertoire. Whether leading his own ensembles or playing with renowned jazz masters, Paquito D'Rivera continues to make a decidedly fresh imprint on Latin and Brazilian jazz. by Paula Edelstein

PAQUITO D'RIVERA - Este Camino Largo (2002) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This anthology of saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera's work inside and outside of Irakere in 1978 offers a view of the reedman as he was developing his mature jazz style adapted not only from the folk and dance musics of his native Cuba, but also from postmodern jazz. Among the ten tracks are cuts with Irakere as well as duets with Chucho Valdés, large-band dates (with a big-band date from Finland), and combo dates featuring countryman Arturo Sandoval on trumpet. Highlights include his own "Chikere -- Son," his reading of Valdés' "Juana 1600," and a gorgeous interpretation of Villa-Lobos' "Prelude No. 3."

PAQUITO D'RIVERA - The Lost Sessions (2002) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

While the title would have listeners believe that these sessions are of a piece, they are actually compiled tracks from the years 1976-1978, with four different bands and five different sessions -- including two in Havana. Some of the D'Rivera's associates on these dates include the Finland Jazz Combo, Chucho and Oscar Valdes, Arturo Sandoval, Emilio Morales, and Irakere. The program contains everything from American standards such as "I Want to Talk About You," given a squealing yet lyrical read -- and "Stella By Starlight," to fiery Cuban jazz, such as the stomping "La Patica," to Brazilian-styled numbers such as " "Bossa Del Pico Electrico." Whether the accompaniment is Irakere, or the more traditional players in Europe or Latin America, D'Rivera's horn is constantly burning and twisting, creating new harmonic lines in the front as he reinvents cadences rhythmically. This is a stellar collection, and one that every fan should at least hear.

PAQUITO D'RIVERA - Big Band Time (2003) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Paquito D'Rivera obviously loves big-band music, and it suits him very well, both as a soloist and a writer -- it gives him a chance to bring plenty of color and crisp rhythm to his Latin sound. That he has a very strong band with him certainly helps. Frank Chastenier on piano is a standout, especially on the slow "Song for Maura," which aches with tenderness, and where D'Rivera himself shines. It's definitely a pan-Latin disc, embracing not only D'Rivera's native Cuba but also some strong touches of Brazil on "Who's Smokin'?," in addition to nods back to history, with lots of strong bop and even some of the contrapuntal melodies of Bach popping their noses over the wall here and here, courtesy of some skillful and witty arrangements. D'Rivera is never subsumed by the band, but often solos above it, mellifluous and swinging, especially on "A Lo Tristano," but with the type of silky phrasing that's long been his hallmark. He knows his jazz history, and isn't afraid to be inspired by others -- such as Al DiMeola on "Danza Caracteristica." It's a testament to D'Rivera that this is so good -- and remains thoroughly enjoyable. by Chris Nickson

PAQUITO D'RIVERA - The Jazz Chamber Trio (2005) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This delightful project features altoist Paquito D'Rivera mostly playing clarinet in a trio with cellist Mark Summer and pianist Alon Yavnai. Although their set includes originals by all three musicians, the music overall is as strongly influenced by Cuban folk music and classical themes as by jazz. D'Rivera clearly enjoys mixing together the different idioms to create new and fresh music that is filled with the spirit and joy of his brand of jazz. The versatility of the three musicians is even more impressive than their inventive repertoire, making this a unique and highly recommended item in Paquito D'Rivera's extensive discography. by Scott Yanow

CARIBBEAN JAZZ PROJECT - The Caribbean Jazz Project (1995) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This was the debut release by the Caribbean Jazz Project, a colorful co-op project that combines together the very different but complementary styles of Paquito D'Rivera (doubling on alto and clarinet), Dave Samuels (on marimba and vibes) and the brilliant steel drummer Andy Narell. Backed by a four-piece rhythm section, the accessible group sticks mostly to catchy group originals that range from Latin jazz to Caribbean music. The likable results are melodic and not overly predictable. This CD gives listeners an excellent example of the group's sound. by Scott Yanow

CARIBBEAN JAZZ PROJECT - Island Stories (1997) APE (image+.cue), lossless

The second recording by this co-op group (which has three leaders in steel drummer Andy Narell, Dave Samuels on marimba and vibes and Paquito D'Rivera tripling on alto, clarinet and soprano) crosses a lot of boundaries. Designed as a musical tour through Latin America, the music ranges from a tribute to Cal Tjader and Astor Piazzolla's "Libertango" to "Andalucia" (better known as "The Breeze and I") and "Bluellespie" (which fuses together parts of several Dizzy Gillespie-associated songs). The blend between the vibes and steel drums is unique, the rhythm section (pianist Dario Eskenazi, bassist Oscar Stagnaro, drummer Mark Walker and percussionist Pernell Saturnino) is versatile and exciting, and D'Rivera's soprano playing in particular is impressive. Easily recommended to all jazz listeners. by Scott Yanow

CARIBBEAN JAZZ PROJECT - The Gathering (2002) APE (image+.cue), lossless

The Gathering is the Caribbean Jazz Project's third release; principals Dave Samuels and Dave Valentin are joined by Paquito D'Rivera, once a regular with the group, on the lively opener, "Rendezvous," as well as a Latin reworking of Monk's "Bemsha Swing." Oliver Nelson's classic "Stolen Moments" comes in for a moody 7/4 treatment. Pianist Dario Eskanazi, bassist Ruben Rodriguez, and percussionists Dafnis Prieto, Richie Flores, and Robert Quintero provide strong backing for the front-and-center solo exchanges of Samuels and Valentin. The band is consistently melodic and accessible, not just on romantic themes like "Libertad" and "The Path" but also on more adventurous fare like Prieto's "El Guarachero Intrigozo (The Scheming Party Animal)" and the big finish, "Masacoteando (In the Groove)." by David R. CARIBBEAN JAZZ PROJECT - Mosaic (2006) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Working a bright, innovative corner of Latin jazz and drawing on Jamaican, Afro-Cuban, Venezuelan, and Peruvian rhythms to create a hybrid mosaic (as the title suggests), the loose, rotating collective that is the Caribbean Jazz Project manages to be many things at once, including a dance band with a hard bop sensibility, and at times the ensemble comes close to being a new age chillout orchestra. Whatever label they wear, CJP have a bright, infectious sound, led by vibraphonist Dave Samuels' bubbling and watery tones and, on three tracks here, the amazing talking steel drums of Andy Narell. Violinist Christian Howes guests on Samuels' "Slow Dance," giving it a wonderfully eerie and wheezing feel. Other highlights in what is truly a compellingly bright mosaic are the angular "Spinnaker," the ever-expanding "Portraits of Cuba," and the interesting version of Miles Davis' "Nardis" that starts off the sequence. CJP, in whatever incarnation (and players vary here almost from track to track with Samuels as the main constant), manage to sound new and fresh, experimental and atmospheric, and yet still familiar and traditional, and often all of these things at once, resulting in music that is as fluid as a wave in the sun. by Steve Leggett

PAQUITO D' RIVERA - Portraits of Cuba (1996-2005) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Because Paquito D'Rivera is such a compelling improviser, one greets a heavily arranged and orchestrated session like Portraits of Cuba with some apprehension. But as it turns out, such apprehension is unwarranted, for the Cuban saxman/clarinetist still has enough room to solo and say what needs to be said. With this 1996 session, which was arranged and conducted by Carlos Franzetti and finds D'Rivera backed by combinations of up to 14 musicians, D'Rivera envisioned an Afro-Cuban equivalent of Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain -- and, to be sure, there are some parallels. Franzetti's classical-influenced arrangements recall Gil Evans' work with Davis, and D'Rivera paints an orchestral jazz picture of Cuba much as Davis painted an orchestral jazz picture of Spain. The key phrase here is "jazz picture" -- D'Rivera approaches famous Cuban songs like Ignacio Pineiro's "Echale Salsita" and Ernesto Lecuona's "Como Arrullo de Palmas" from an instrumental jazz perspective; this is jazz with both Afro-Cuban and classical elements, but it's jazz first and foremost. Recorded in New York around the time of the infamous Blizzard of 1996 -- which dumped up to three feet of snow on parts of the Northeastern U.S. -- Portraits of Cuba is among D'Rivera's most essential recordings. by Alex Henderson

BEBO VALDÉS - Bebo Ride Again (1994-2004) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This CD is both historic and quite exciting. Bebo Valdes (father of Chucho, the leader of Irakere) was one of the giants of Cuban jazz and popular music until he fled the country in 1960. Amazingly enough, he had not recorded since, despite living peacefully in Sweden. This recording is also significant in that it is one of the first times that Cuban exiles had recorded with Cubans still living under Castro (guitarist Carlos Emilio Morales and percussionist Amadito Valdes). Paquito D'Rivera (who organized this set) deserves a lot of credit for its success, but Valdes is the real star. He composed eight new selections in the 36 hours before the recordings began, although he was 76 years old at the time. Although Valdes claimed that, with the lack of sleep and excess of writing (he also arranged ten of the 11 songs), his fingers felt a bit stiff, he plays quite well throughout the very enjoyable music. The final results are full of strong melodies, stirring rhythms, exciting ensembles, and lots of variety. The instrumentation differs on each track, with plenty of solo space for D'Rivera (on both alto and clarinet), trombonist Juan-Pablo Torres (who takes "Veinte Anos" as a duet with Valdes), trumpeter Diego Urcola, and the pianist. The percussionists work together quite well behind the lead voices, and every selection is well worth hearing. This is one of the finest Afro-Cuban jazz recordings of recent times. Highly recommended. Scott Yanow

JEANIE BRYSON - Some Cats Know: Jeanie Bryson Sings Songs Of Peggy Lee [1996] Telarc

This is a very logical tribute. Jeanie Bryson has a small but coolly sensual voice, just as Peggy Lee did during her prime. Bryson performs three songs on which Lee wrote the lyrics (including "I Don't Know Enough About You" and "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'"), ten other songs that have been associated with Lee (such as "Some Cats Know," "Why Don't You Do Right" and the inevitable "Fever"), and a number ("Where in the World Are You") penned by Jeanie's mother Connie Bryson. The singer is supported by an intriguing group that includes a four-piece rhythm section with guitarist John Chiodini and pianist Terry Trotter, tenor saxophonist Red Holloway, Paquito D'Rivera (sticking to clarinet), and trumpeter Ronnie Buttacavoli. This is one of Jeanie Bryson's best efforts and should please both her fans and those of Peggy Lee.    by Scott Yanow
