PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI (1972-2013) 10 Albums / FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Throughout the late '60s and early '70s, Premiata Forneria Marconi worked from their Italian homeland under the moniker of I Quelli. Their first album under the new name was Storia di un Minuto. They followed that one rather quickly with Per un Amico, which caught the attention of ELP's Greg Lake who invited them to visit London. During that visit, the group met Pete Sinfield (King Crimson, Roxy Music). Sinfield was so taken with the group that he decided to come on board writing lyrics and producing them. The result of that collaboration was Photos of Ghosts, but it was really only an English reworking of Per un Amico. Due to difficulties the British press was having with the name of the group, it was then shortened to PFM. The group released a true third album in L'isola di Niente. When it was set loose upon England, it was entitled The World Become the World. In the mid-'70s, Cook, a live album was released. It was renamed Live in U.S.A. for its Italian release. Their next release, after extensive touring and a short break, was Chocolate King. It became the first album to only feature an English version, the group having had done both English and Italian renditions of previous releases. The album, although not a huge commercial success, did generate enough interest to sign the band to Elektra Asylum Records. The next album, Jet Lag, was released in 1977 and was the last U.S. release, as they decided to return to Italy to concentrate on their home roots. They released Passpartù as the first album in their new homeland adventure. They eventually hooked up with RCA Records and released Suonare Suonare on that label. They followed that up with Come Ti Va In Riva Alla Città. The group waited about ten years before doing another album, with Ulisse coming in 1997. 2000 saw the release of Serendipity.  by Gary Hill

Per Um Amico (1972-2014)

This is PFM's brilliant follow-up to Storia di un Minuto, and both albums are considered progressive rock classics, for good reason. The diversity, complexity, and integrity of the music here is as fine as anything produced during the early '70s from other prog rock giants such as Yes, Genesis, and King Crimson. The lyrics are in Italian and, while used sparingly, make a valuable contribution to the session's integrity. The music is constantly shifting in style, tempo, and tone, but held together by recurring themes. Mauro Pagani's airy flute is the perfect antidote to Francone Mussida's aggressive guitar, while Flavio Premoli's keyboard work rivals that of contemporaries such as Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman. The music ranges from avant-garde to hard rock and everything in between. Always intelligent, but without pretension, this is progressive rock in its most literal definition. by Robert Taylor

Storia di um Minuto (1972-2014)

The debut recording from Italy's favorite sons of progressive rock. The band had been appearing as special guests in support of bands such as Procol Harum, Deep Purple, and Yes, in addition to playing several festivals. Their hard work paid off, and the result is this excellent recording. Recorded live in the studio, PFM proved they were every bit as creative and talented as the U.K. bands of the time. Their symphonic prog rock commingles elements of folk, classical, and jazz in a genuine manner. This is achieved by their transcendent and pliant level of musicianship. "Impressioni di Settembre" and the two-part "Dove...Quando" demonstrate the band's ability to create rich harmonies with pop-like melodies. The band can also lay it down pretty heavy, as can be heard on the rocking "È Festa," which turned out to be one of their most requested songs. Storia di un Minuto stands as one of the best progressive rock debuts in history, and along with Per un Amico and Photos of Ghosts, is essential to any serious collection. by Robert Taylor

 L' Isola di Niente (1974-2014)

Premiata Forneria Marconi's third Italian album (their fourth if one counts the 1973 release Photos of Ghosts, the English version of Per un Amico) came out shortly before ELP's Manticore imprint released its English version under the title The World Became the World. Unless lyrics sung in a language other than English is aggravating to you, by all means prefer the original version. Like for Banco del Mutuo Soccorso and Le Orme, the music of PFM is impregnated with the lyricism of the Italian language. The most confusing of the group's first three LPs, L'Isola di Niente (The Island of Nothing) sees the group pushing its music to a new level of complexity, while giving a first hint at their later jazz-rock orientation. The title track (which will became "The Mountain" on The World Became the World) is a very powerful, almost shocking 11-minute epic, with choir, rolling echo-drenched drums and some of the most theatrical vocal performance you are likely to hear on a PFM record. BMG's 24-bit gold remastered CD reissue has helped clarify the choir sections (murky at best on the cheap vinyl pressings from days of yore), but the impact of the piece is still lessened by the tons of effects the group used. "Is My Face on Straight" is the only track that appeared in English on both LPs. The lyrics of ex-King Crimson's Pete Sinfield match the cadavre exquis-like collage of seemingly unrelated musical sections. PFM exhibit some of their best musical chops on this crazy number. "La Luna Nuova" (retitled "Four Holes to the Ground" on The World) is the track sounding the most familiar in comparison to the group's first two albums. It is also one of their best symphonic progressive rockers, with that sweet Italian flavor the harsh "L'Isola di Niente" eschewed. The ballad "Dolcissima Maria" is little more than that, but still much better in this rendition than its English counterpart "Just Look Away." The closing instrumental "Via Lumiére" (needlessly retitled "Have Your Cake and Beat It" on The World) was this album's enigma. Beginning with a rather free-form bass solo from Jan Patrick Djivas, it evolves into a frantic jazz-rock vamp, before reverting to a Yes-like mid-tempo finale. L'Isola di Niente was to be the group's last masterpiece (the next LP, Chocolate Kings, will show serious signs of fatigue) and remains one of the first Italian progressive rock wave's finest records, but it is more of an acquired taste compared to Storia di un Minuto and Per un Amico. by François Couture

 Jet Lag (1977-2014) SHM-CD

As PFM's work showed the increasing influence of electric jazz, the releases showed more impressive chops and yet also became less compelling to listen to. Jet Lag is the first release of theirs to cross this line, as it's noticeably less enjoyable than the previous year's Chocolate Kings. Still, it has its moments-the interlaced electric piano and violin of the lengthy title track and the instrumental "Left Handed Theory" salvage an otherwise forgettable effort. by Paul Collins

Lançado em novembro de 1972, apenas nove meses após o primeiro álbum "Storia Di Un Minuto", esse disco é considerado por muitos, o melhor do grupo, que existia desde os meados da década de 60 com o nome “I Quelli”, mas, sem o multinstrumentista Mauro Pagani, que entrou em 71 para mudar o rumo da banda. 

“Per Un Amico” começa com “Appena Un Po”, que entra lentamente com um órgão e um lindo violão dedilhado recebendo a companhia de uma flauta, notas de cravo e, depois, chegando à um som único de todos os instrumentos. O som fica pesado quando guitarras surgem, abrindo para uma bonita e calma cantoria culminando com uma excelente melodia feita no órgão, que é seguida de uma parte instrumental, contando com solos de flauta. No final, novamente, a bonita cantoria culmina com a melodia feita no órgão. A melodia se repete, só que no sintetizador, no término da faixa. 

“Generale” é uma agitada música que começa com vibrantes batidas de bateria até a entrada de um estrondoso solo do Moog de Premoli acompanhado de violino e piano. No meio da faixa, aparece uma marchinha junto com flautim, abrindo espaço para mais um solo de sintetizador, que termina quando uma nota grave de órgão é feita. Após alguns dedilhados de bandolim, o Moog retorna para fechar a faixa.

A emocionante “Per Un Amico” é iniciada com solos de flauta e piano. Apresenta em toda sua extensão, a excelente atuação de todos os músicos. Destaque para as partes vocais, para Mauro Pagani com um ótimo solo de violino, para Franco Mussida com um ótimo solo de violão acompanhado de bandolim e,  para Flavio Premoli, que mais uma vez, encontra espaços perfeitos para o órgão, o piano, curtas notas de mellotron e, o sintetizador, que finaliza a música com uma boa melodia.

“Il Banchetto”, talvez a música mais conhecida do álbum, começa com um solo de violão e uma linda cantoria, que mais tarde é acompanhada de baixo e piano. Mauro Pagani faz mais um excelente e curto solo de flauta, que sai de cena para a entrada de um clima espacial criado pelo Moog e pelo violão, contando com rápidas notas de cravo fazendo parecer uma harpa e batidas de bateria. De repente, a música ganha um show à parte de Premoli, primeiro com órgãos, mellotron e sintetizadores, e depois, no piano. Chegando ao fim, a canção volta com todos os instrumentos, em uma passagem perfeita, com destaque para o baixo de Piazza e, a bela cantoria da banda, que faz um coro no final.

Um solo de flauta inicia “Geranio”. A faixa possui, novamente, a boa cantoria do grupo e uma parte bem calma, que se torna contagiante após notas crescentes de piano, onde a bateria entra com tudo junto com um solo de cravo e as vozes de todos. A melodia se repete somente no piano, que faz introdução para notas graves de sintetizador com o baixo acompanhando. Essa parte acaba quando o maravilhoso violino de Pagani entra em ação e é interrompido abruptamente pelo som de um gongo. A música recomeça lentamente com a parte cantada e vai ganhando um som pesado com ótimas batidas de bateria, dedilhados de violão e um baixo bravo. Para terminar, pequenas notas de piano seguidas de um maquiavélico solo de Moog e, sons de sinos e campainhas. 

Indico esse álbum à todos, mesmo aqueles que não apreciam rock progressivo, pois, como muitas bandas italianas do gênero, o PFM faz bem aos ouvidos.

No dia 20 de dezembro de 1972, ao assistir um show da banda em Roma, Greg Lake (ex-King Crimson e atual ELP), surpreso com o som destes italianos, apresentou-os ao seu amigo Pete Sinfield (letrista do King Crimson). Lake fez a banda assinar com o selo inglês Manticore, o mesmo do ELP. Como o grupo queria conquistar o público inglês e, consequentemente o mercado norte-americano, foi lançado em março de 1973 o álbum “Photos Of Ghosts”, que nada mais era, que todo o disco “Per Un Amico” gravado em inglês, exceto a faixa “Il Banchetto” que permaneceu em italiano, mais “Celebration” versão de “É festa” do primeiro álbum e, uma nova música entitulada “Old Rain” composta por Premoli. Conquistaram os visados mercados, mas, até hoje, muitos norte-americanos e ingleses preferem o idioma italiano, que além de combinar com o som do grupo, deixa a música ainda mais peculiar.

O começo da década de 70, mais precisamente os anos de 1972 e 1973 foram absurdamente férteis para a música. Se consolidava e efervescia neste período o Rock Progressivo como um dos gêneros mais populares, criativos e impressionantes do mundo. A Inglaterra tinha a dianteira do "prog rock" com supergrupos como Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Genesis, Yes e Jethro Tull. A Alemanha corria por fora com seu rock progressivo pirado e psicodélico chamado Krautrock, com grupos como Magma, Can, NEU! e Amon Düül. Já a Itália, apesar de menos badalada, era mais um epicentro criativo e ativo no prog rock, liderado pelo Premiata Forneria Marconi, e seu "Storia di un Minuto", que talvez seja um dos melhores debuts de todo o rock progressivo.

O PFM atraiu grande atenção para a, antes esquecida, cena italiana, que contava com nomes igualmente dignos como Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Le Orme, Quella Vecchia Locanda e New Trolls.

"Storia di un Minuto", este álbum é, até os dias de hoje, a melhor amostra da pura essência do rock progressivo sinfônico italiano. Melodias magistralmente construídas, qualidade técnica de sobra, uma suave psicodelia e, talvez a maior marca deste gênero, o Mellotron.

As influências mais evidentes, não só deste trabalho, como da carreira do PFM são Genesis e King Crimson, como não poderia deixar de ser, visto o som sinfônico praticado pela banda.

O álbum é, praticamente, indefectível, mas valendo ressaltar as faixas "Impressioni di Settembri" e "La Carroza di Hans" que facilmente podem entrar para qualquer coletânea de rock progressivo setentista, e impressionar qualquer desavisado quanto à capacidade dos rapazes de Milão.

Não por menos, após este debut, o PFM tornou-se a primeira, e provavelmente única, banda italiana de rock a obter êxito comercial fora de seu país de origem. Pignes

Não é um disco no nível de "Per un Amico" ou "Storia di un Minuto", mas qualquer álbum com a formação clássica de PFM é sempre bom o suficiente, arranjos vocais incríveis, impecáveis em italiano por Franco Mussida (na linguagem que foram feitos para serem ouvidos) e uma banda que não tem nada a invejar dos monstros clássicos britânicos.

Muito mais do calmos que as versões anteriores pode ser um pouco chato para aqueles que não estão acostumados ao Prog Sinfônico Italiano, mas interessante para os que já amam o lirismo especial do Premiata Forneria Marconi.

A incrível introdução da canção-título "La Isola di Niente" (ilha de ninguém) é motivo suficiente para pagar por este bom álbum, o contraste entre a introdução coral e a instrumentação hard é uma reminiscência de King Crimson, mas com uma abordagem sinfônica típica do Prog Italiano, um épico muito complexo que pode ser árido para as pessoas que não entendem italiano.

"Is My Face On Straight" é a segunda faixa e a única em Inglês com letra de Pete Sinfield, canção sarcástica que menciona temas como racismo e elitismo, música muito complexa, com toques de Jazz, o problema é que as mudanças são demasiado radicais e não procedem uma  seqüência lógica. Um pouco estranha, mas uma boa faixa.

"La Luna Nuova" (The New Moon), começa como um hino com uma seção de teclado muito bonito que vai em crescendo, entretanto, flauta e percussão se juntam com algum sentimento jazzy, quando o ouvinte pensa que a faixa chegou a um ponto calmo, tudo começa de novo, uma canção que está sempre com antecedência como se perseguindo algo que não atinge completamente. O violino no meio dá um sabor delicado especial e novamente o hino e a perseguição começam tudo de novo. 

"Dolcissima Maria" (Sweetest Mary): A flauta doce e percussão suave é um dos pontos mais altos de todo o álbum. Ainda não tenho certeza se as letras têm conotações religiosas relacionadas com a Santíssima Virgem, porque o texto é tão ambíguo que pode funcionar como uma oração ou uma canção de amor puro.

O álbum termina com a instrumental "La Via Lumiere" (Lumiere Street) é uma peça com claras influências de Mahavishnu Orchestra, em torno do meio da música o PFM retoma o som clássico italiano para preparar o fim que se desvanece suavemente no humor sinfônico típico.

Premiata Forneria Marconi's third Italian album (their fourth if one counts the 1973 release Photos of Ghosts, the English version of Per un Amico) came out shortly before ELP's Manticore imprint released its English version under the title The World Became the World. Unless lyrics sung in a language other than English is aggravating to you, by all means prefer the original version. Like for Banco del Mutuo Soccorso and Le Orme, the music of PFM is impregnated with the lyricism of the Italian language. The most confusing of the group's first three LPs, L'Isola di Niente (The Island of Nothing) sees the group pushing its music to a new level of complexity, while giving a first hint at their later jazz-rock orientation. The title track (which will became "The Mountain" on The World Became the World) is a very powerful, almost shocking 11-minute epic, with choir, rolling echo-drenched drums and some of the most theatrical vocal performance you are likely to hear on a PFM record. BMG's 24-bit gold remastered CD reissue has helped clarify the choir sections (murky at best on the cheap vinyl pressings from days of yore), but the impact of the piece is still lessened by the tons of effects the group used. "Is My Face on Straight" is the only track that appeared in English on both LPs. The lyrics of ex-King Crimson's Pete Sinfield match the cadavre exquis-like collage of seemingly unrelated musical sections. PFM exhibit some of their best musical chops on this crazy number. "La Luna Nuova" (retitled "Four Holes to the Ground" on The World) is the track sounding the most familiar in comparison to the group's first two albums. It is also one of their best symphonic progressive rockers, with that sweet Italian flavor the harsh "L'Isola di Niente" eschewed. The ballad "Dolcissima Maria" is little more than that, but still much better in this rendition than its English counterpart "Just Look Away." The closing instrumental "Via Lumiére" (needlessly retitled "Have Your Cake and Beat It" on The World) was this album's enigma. Beginning with a rather free-form bass solo from Jan Patrick Djivas, it evolves into a frantic jazz-rock vamp, before reverting to a Yes-like mid-tempo finale. L'Isola di Niente was to be the group's last masterpiece (the next LP, Chocolate Kings, will show serious signs of fatigue) and remains one of the first Italian progressive rock wave's finest records, but it is more of an acquired taste compared to Storia di un Minuto and Per un Amico.

Este é o segundo álbum do PFM a ter musicas gravadas em Inglês (o primeiro foi "Photos Of Ghosts"). "The World Becames The World" é composta por todas as cinco faixas do álbum "L'Isola Di Niente", além da faixa 'Impressione Di Settembre' (rebatizado "The World Becames The World") do primeiro álbum da banda, "Storia di un Minuto", com letras de Peter Sinfield substituindo a letra original italiano.

A faixa-título do álbum "L'Isola Di Niente" tornou-se "The Mountain", "La Luna Nova" se tornou "Four Holes in The Ground", "Dolcissima Maria" tornou-se "Just Look Away", "Via Lumiére" tornou-se "Have Your Cake And Eat It", e "Is My Face On Straight"é, naturalmente, a mesma faixa.

A música é basicamente a mesma (e excelente), mas os vocais e as letras-se soam melhores no álbum original. "Dolcissima Maria", em particular, é muito melhor do que "Just Look Away" na minha opinião. No entanto, eu gosto das letras de Sinfield na pista "The World Became The World" e essa pista é muito agradável, como é a original " Impressione Di Settembre", em "Storia di un Minuto".

De qualquer forma, é um excelente adição a qualquer coleção de Rock Progressivo e para os fãs do PFM.
