RACHMANINOV : The Complete Works (2014) 32xCD BOX-SET | APE (image+.cue), lossless

Presented on 32 discs in a sturdy box set, Rachmaninov: The Complete Works consists of the piano concertos, solo piano compositions, transcriptions, chamber pieces, symphonies, and other orchestral works, as well as the operas, songs, and choral music, all drawn from Decca's vast catalog. The roster of performers impresses with its variety, and the piano music especially benefits from the number of artists involved, which includes Martha Argerich, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Nelson Freire, Mikhail Pletnev, Zoltán Kocsis, Byron Janis, Alexis Weissenberg, Alexander Ghindin, Sviatoslav Richter, and Jorge Bolet, among others. The orchestral performances are led by such eminent conductors as Ashkenazy (in his second career as a conductor), André Previn, Neeme Järvi, Riccardo Chailly, Kirill Kondrashin, Walter Weller, Edo de Waart, and Charles Dutoit. The set also includes bonuses: The Ampico Recordings, which were taken from piano rolls Rachmaninov made between 1919 and 1929; and an interview, "Rachmaninov: Vladimir Ashkenazy and Rob Cowan Discuss the Russian Romantic." Fans of Rachmaninov's intensely passionate music will find this set essential and a lot more practical to buy in one shot than to acquire the CDs separately. However, many collectors will already own a few of these classic recordings, so the prospect of duplication is great. Blair Sanderson

ELLA FITZGERALD AND ANDRÉ PREVIN — Nice Work If You Can Get It (1983) Two Version (1984, Pablo Today – 3112-50 Japan) + (1987, Pablo Records – 00025218014021) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Ella Fitzgerald, who in the late '50s recorded the very extensive George and Ira Gershwin Songbook, revisits their music on this duet outing with pianist André Previn. Her voice was past her prime by this point, but she was able to bring out a lot of the beauty in the ten songs, giving the classic melodies and lyrics tasteful and lightly swinging treatment. Nice Work If You Can Get It is not an essential CD but is a reasonably enjoyable outing. Scott Yanow

ANDRÉ PREVIN'S TRIO JAZZ — King Size! (1958-2001) RM | Serie Heritage Of Jazz By Digital K2 Contemporary 40 – 40 | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The multi-talented Andre Previn is heard on this recording as the leader of a trio with bassist Red Mitchell and drummer Frankie Capp. Previn always had his own swing/bop piano style, and he is in top form on two of his originals (including the bluish "Much Too Late") and four superior standards. This fine release gives one an excellent example of Previn's skills as a jazz pianist. Scott Yanow

ANDRÉ PREVIN — Andre Previn Plays Songs By Vernon Duke (1958-1991) RM | Original Jazz Classics Limited Edition Series | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

A measure of how respected André Previn has long been in many musical fields is that this set of unaccompanied jazz piano solos has liner notes by the composer of the ten songs, Vernon Duke. Previn alternates well-known Duke pieces such as "Autumn in New York," "Taking a Chance on Love," "What Is There to Say," and "I Can't Get Started," with a few obscure numbers including "The Love I Long For," "Ages Ago," and "I Like the Likes of You." Previn is at the peak of his jazz powers, displaying an original yet accessible style that falls between swing and bop. Recommended. Scott Yanow

ELLA FITZGERALD – 1954-1955 | The Classics Chronological Series – 1457 (2008) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The 15th installment in the complete studio recordings of Ella Fitzgerald as reissued in the Classics Chronological Series contains 22 titles cut between March 30, 1954, and August 5, 1955, marking the tail end of her contractual obligations as a Decca recording artist. Ella's involvement with Decca extended a full 20 years back to her initial recording session with the Chick Webb Orchestra in June 1935; by January of 1956 she would be working with Norman Granz (who had already been recording her in live performance with his Jazz at the Philharmonic package), inaugurating one of the great longstanding singer/producer collaborations in the entire history of recorded jazz. Drawing upon material originally made available on the LPs Sweet and Hot, Songs in a Mellow Mood, The First Lady of Song, Lullabies of Birdland and Songs from "Pete Kelly's Blues" (a motion picture in which Ella appeared cast as a jazz singer), this patchwork compilation opens with three songs that close out one of the delightful sessions that she shared with pianist Ellis Larkins during the spring of 1954. The next two titles come from a date that was typical of Decca's approach to artists and repertoire, for here Ella and a sextet including tenor saxophonist Sam Taylor, pianist Hank Jones, and organist Bill Doggett were pitted against a standard issue '50s pop vocal choir. Other ensembles heard on this disc were conducted or supervised by Benny Carter, Sy Oliver, André Previn, Dick Hyman, and Toots Camarata. Altogether, it's a fine portrait of Ella Fitzgerald in one of her primes, and an effective appetizer for the next chapter in her musical biography. arwulf arwulf

BENNY CARTER - Jazz Giant (1958-1987) RM | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Benny Carter had already been a major jazz musician for nearly 30 years when he recorded this particularly strong septet session for Contemporary. With notable contributions from tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, trombonist Frank Rosolino and guitarist Barney Kessel, Carter (who plays a bit of trumpet on "How Can You Lose") is in superb form on a set of five standards and two of his originals. This timeless music is beyond the simple categories of "swing" or "bop" and should just be called "classic". Scott Yanow

BETTY BENNETT - Nobody Else But Me (1956-2007) Atlantic 60th / Mp3

Nobody Else But Me illuminates the dark corners of romance with rare depth and maturity -- Betty Bennett's sultry, knowing vocals further establish the palpable feeling that this is a record for adults. Shorty Rogers and André Previn share arranger duties, and both operate in a framework emphasizing nuance and restraint, enabling Bennett to articulate her tales of love and loss without embellishment or redundancy. Equal parts stylist and storyteller, she fully inhabits relatively little-known songs like "This Is the Moment" and "Treat Me Rough." by Jason Ankeny

ANDRÉ PREVIN - After Hours with Joe Pass & Ray Brown (1989) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Although André Previn had not recorded a regular jazz album in 27 years at this point in time (discounting a pair of Itzhak Perlman sessions featuring Previn's compositions), the great majority of the performances on this trio set with guitarist Joe Pass and bassist Ray Brown are first takes. Previn took time off from his busy schedule in the classical music world to return briefly to jazz, his first love. The results are often magical. Previn, Pass and Brown play together as if they had been touring as a group for years. The pianist is generous with solo space and Pass' solos are sometimes exhilarating. For Previn, it is as if the previous three decades did not occur for he plays in a style little changed from 1960, displaying an Oscar Peterson influence mixed in with touches of Lennie Tristano and Bill Evans' chording, performing ten standards and his own "One for Bunz." Highly recommended. by Scott Yanow

SHELLY MANNE & HIS FRIENDS - Modern Jazz Performances of Songs from Li'l Abner (1957-2003) RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

In a follow-up to their hit recording of music from My Fair Lady, Shelly Manne and his Friends (a trio with pianist André Previn, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and the drummer/leader) recorded nine songs from the play Li'l Abner. Although Johnny Mercer and Gene DePaul wrote the score, none of the songs caught on except for the ballad "Namely You," and this LP (whose music has not been reissued yet on CD) was not a best-seller. The musicians are in fine form but the melodies are not too memorable (when was the last time anyone played "If I Had My Druthers" or "Progress Is the Root of All Evil"?). Actually the main reason to search for this album is for the hilarious photo on the cover. by Scott Yanow

Pianist André Previn, bassist Red Mitchell, and drummer Shelly Manne perform eight songs that debuted in the show Pal Joey. Best known is "I Could Write a Book," which quickly became a standard, but the other, more obscure songs such as "Take Him," "Zip," and "Do It the Hard Way" are also generally good devices for jazz improvising. This trio set by Shelly Manne & His Friends (consisting of the drummer/leader, pianist André Previn, and bassist Leroy Vinnegar) was a surprise best-seller and is now considered a classic. Previn (who is really the main voice) leads the group through eight themes from the famous play, including "Get Me to the Church on Time," "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," "I Could Have Danced All Night," and "On the Street Where You Live." The last of a series of showtune albums recorded by the trio of pianist Andre Previn, bassist Red Mitchell and drummer Shelly Manne finds the all-star group focusing on the music of West Side Story (Previn and Manne alternated leadership, and it was the drummer's good fortune to have the famous My Fair Lady album under his own name). This CD reissue has eight of the main themes from the famous musical, including "I Feel Pretty," "Maria" and "America." As usual, the melodies are treated respectfully yet swingingly, and Andre Previn in particular excels in this setting. by Scott Yanow

This out-of-print LP (when is Columbia going to start seriously reissuing their Andre Previn jazz dates on CD?) is one of the pianist's strongest. Teamed up with guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne, Previn performs six standards (including "No Moon at All," "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" and "Like Someone In Love"), plus an original apiece by each of the musicians. The musicians, all friends, show obvious mutual respect, and despite a lack of rehearsal, the swinging results are generally quite memorable. by Scott Yanow

MOZART: Piano Trios K. 502, 542, 548 - Anne-Sophie Mutter / Daniel Müller-Schott / André Previn (2006) FLAC

In 2006, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's birth plus the 30th anniversary of Anne-Sophie Mutter's public debut, Deutsche Grammophon released new recordings of the German violinist in all the Austrian composer's major works featuring her instrument. To celebrate Mutter's undeniable beauty, each body of works was released with a different photograph of Mutter on the cover: the set of concertos had Mutter poured into a stunning bottle green mermaid gown, the set of sonatas had Mutter wrapped in a shimmering golden yellow strapless gown, and this set of the piano trios has Mutter's wonderfully made-up face and marvelously coifed hair in close-up. And just as no one but a blind man would deny Mutter's beauty, no one but a deaf man would deny Mutter's standing as one of the great violinists of her age with flawless intonation, faultless technique, a sensual tone, and a warmly romantic interpretive style. Of course, some might say that a warmly romantic interpretive style is out of place in the transcendently elegant works of Mozart. Others might point out that Mutter plays with impeccable taste and consummate control in these three late piano trios, but even they might concede that her performances are perhaps too sweet and possibly too ardent for the sublimely graceful Mozart. Cellist Daniel Müller-Schott and pianist André Previn are united behind Mutter and their performance is as one with Mutter in style and approach. For some, this disc will be a lovely addition to their Mutter collection. For others, the classic recording by the Beaux Arts Trio may seem closer to the classical style of the music. DG's sound is very flattering to Mutter, but puts Müller-Schott and Previn a bit too far in the background.
