PHILIP CATHERINE — September Man (1974-2017) RM | Vinyl, LP | FLAC (tracks), lossless

Credit where credit is due: Palle Mikkelborg - trumpet, piano, Jasper van't Hoff - keyboards, Charlie Mariano - saxes + flute, John Lee - bass and Gerry Brown - drums. Catherine mostly on electric guitar but also occasional acoustic moments. It is never loud but still very intense, rarely fast but far from lame. While there are great solos throughout, the other players are not pushed to the background by the one in the spotlight but instead respond and challenge. This is more of a band album than a guitarist's showcase. Roxanne Walsh

LARRY CORYELL | PHILIP CATHERINE — Twin House + Five Splendid Bonus Tracks (1977) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

The first of two fine guitar duet recordings with Phillip Catherine. Of the two, Catherine's sound is more rooted in the tradition of Django Reinhardt and tends to be more introspective. Coryell is his usual incorrigible self; however, Catherine's presence seemed to inspire more experimentation and intelligent playing on Coryell's part. As expected, this session will appeal primarily to guitarists -- and for good reason, as both players exploit their chops -- but it should be noted that the compositions here are quite memorable. Whether soloing over one riff ("Mortgage on Your Soul"), playing the blues ("Twin House"), or showing off ("Airpower"), this is an excellent collaboration and one of Coryell's most ambitious performances. CORYELL | CATHERINE — Splendid (1978-2007) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The companion to Twin House proves to be just as good as the first. This session is a bit more experimental than the first and includes the always reliable Joachim Kühn on piano ("Dues Xango"). Like their first effort, it is not just their remarkable technique that makes this a worthy effort, but also the energetic compositions. Splendid is just as good, if not better, than Twin House, hence, both are recommended. Robert Taylor

STÉPHANE GRAPPELLI | PHILIP CATHERINE | LARRY CORYELL | NIELS-HENNING ØRSTED PEDERSEN — Young Django (1979-1984) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This CD finds veteran violinist Stephane Grappelli joined by bassist Niels Pedersen and guitarists Philip Catherine and Larry Coryell for a memorable tribute to Django Reinhardt. Grappelli has recorded many Reinhardt memorial albums through the years but this one is particularly special for both Coryell and Catherine go out of their way to display the unexpected influence that Reinhardt has had on their styles. The guitarists contribute a song apiece and also enjoy playing seven compositions co-written by Django and Grappelli. Scott Yanow

NIELS-HENNING ØRSTED PEDERSEN | PHILIP CATHERINE — The Viking (1983) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

After countless sessions for Norman Granz's Pablo label as a sideman (including with Oscar Peterson and Joe Pass), bassist Niels Pedersen finally had an opportunity to lead his own Pablo date in 1983. The set of duets with guitarist Philip Catherine (which has not yet been reissued on CD) finds Pedersen engaging in close interplay with Catherine, whose sound sometimes recalls Django Reinhardt, although he has an improvising approach of his own. The music is split between standards, including "My Funny Valentine," "Nuages," and "I Fall In Love Too Easily," and inventive originals. A thought-provoking and well-played set of subtle and lyrical music. Scott Yanow

CATHERINE | ESCOUDE | LOOCKWOOD — Trio (1983) WV (image+.cue), lossless

This is an interesting set featuring both Philip Catherine and the lesser-known Christian Escoude on guitars, plus violinist Didier Lockwood -- not a typical trio record. The music often swings a la Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, but the repertoire (three songs apiece by each of the musicians) is more advanced, actually falling into the post-bop genre. Lockwood in particular excels in this setting, making one regret that this Gramavision LP has yet to be reissued on CD. Scott Yanow

PHILIP CATHERINE TRIO ft. TOM HARRELL AND HEIN VAN DE GEYN — I Remember You (1991) WV (image+.cue), lossless

A wonderfully sparse and subtle offering from guitarist Philip Catherine, featuring Tom Harrell on flügelhorn and Hein Van de Geyn on bass. This drumless trio pays memorial tribute to Chet Baker with a tranquil, melancholy set of standards and originals, beginning with Miles Davis' "Nardis" and continuing with an extended Catherine original titled "Twice a Week." The set also includes a swinging "I Remember You," a mid-tempo "My Funny Valentine," and a nod to hard bop with Hank Mobley's "Funk in Deepfreeze." Harrell contributes two originals, "From This Time, From That Time" and "Songflower," while Van de Geyn weighs in with a dark waltz, "Soul Role." Catherine closes the album with his own angular, altered "Blues for G.T." Catherine's bright, twangy sound and tasteful use of vibrato, harmonics, octave leaps, and volume and chorus effects distinguish him from many other straight-ahead jazz guitarists. Van de Geyn proves himself to be not only an excellent timekeeper, but also a conversational ensemble player. And this stripped-down setting especially flatters the velvety, lyrical brilliance of Tom Harrell. David R. Adler

JEAN-LOUIS RASSINFOSSE | CHET BAKER | PHILIP CATHERINE — Crystal Bells (1985) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This 1983 studio date, titled Crystal Bells here yet previously released under other titles, features trumpet Chet Baker performing within a trio setting with the Belgian duo of guitarist Philip Catherine and bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse. Although famously known as an intuitive musician who played by ear, by the '80s Baker's improvisation had coalesced into a beautifully logical, root harmony-based style in which one can discern the exact progressions of any given tune simply by listening to him. Here, his lines connect, turn by turn, melody upon melody like a pastel jigsaw puzzle forming before your eyes. Subsequently, Baker thrived in the company of the like-minded Belgians, whose bop-inflected technical prowess on their instruments was also matched by their deft sense for melodicism and sympathetic group interplay. As accompanists alone, they're superb cohorts for the jazz legend, hanging their ears on each of his notes, outlining the harmonies behind him, and buoying his soft, lyrical phrases. There are also subtle stylistic juxtapositions within the trio with Catherine's choice of electric, amplified guitar allowing for the occasional foray into country twang, or ambient, fusion-infused colorations. Similarly, though, Rassinfosse's velvety double-bass lines reveal the influence of the impressionistic tone of Ron Carter, and he never fails to imply a clipped rhythmic pulse; a necessary skill in the drummerless setting Baker often favored in his later years. Ultimately, Crystal Bells is an absolutely magical session with inspired performances that still ring true so many years after Baker's passing. Matt Collar

CHET BAKER | PHILIP CATHERINE — There'll Never Be Another You (1985-2015) RM | Seie Timeless Jazz Master Collection – 80 | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

There may never be another Chet Baker, but on this particular night in Zagreb, poor Baker was not playing his best: His chops are weak, and his voice is strained and shallow. Still, these four duos, with longtime collaborator, guitarist Philip Catherine, have their rewards, such as the lengthy, substantial, and melodic solos by the guitarist. There is also the opportunity to hear Baker's piano playing at length. On piano, Chet Baker was even sparser than on trumpet, perhaps due to his weaker technique on the former. As with the trumpet, though, his choice of notes was always immaculate, and Baker fans will want this disc for the novelty of his piano playing. As far as his trumpet playing goes, there are much better examples of these tunes elsewhere, particularly of "My Foolish Heart" and "There'll Never Be Another You."  Steve Loewy
