KAY STARR — Losers, Weepers (1960- 2012) RM | Serie 見つめていたい歌姫たち Female Jazz Vocal オリジナル紙ジャケ Collection | FLAC (tracks+.cue) lossless

Kay Starr was always a very underrated jazz singer. Because she had a few pop hits and gained a major name in the 1950s, Starr is often overlooked in the jazz world, but most of her vintage records are well worth investigating. This particular out-of-print LP from around 1957 (the date is approximate) features her backed by a string section arranged by Van Alexander. Although most of the songs have to deal with love, the emphasis is on ballads and the strings are heavy in spots, Starr gives a jazz feeling to each of her dozen interpretations. As usual, in spots she sounds eerily close to Dinah Washington. Highlights include "You Always Hurt the One You Love," "Don't Take Your Love from Me," "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" and "Into Each Rain Some Rain Must Fall." Superior singing. NAT "KING" COLE – 1944-1945 | The Chronogical Classics – 861 (1996) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Heads up, everybody! Here comes Volume Five in the Classics Nat King Cole chronology. This portion of the timeline runs from November 28, 1944 to May 23, 1945, charting the singing pianist's professional progress in trio sessions for Capitol and V-Disc as well as a date with the Capitol International Jazzmen, an all-star group composed of trumpeter Bill Coleman and reedmen Buster Bailey, Benny Carter and Coleman Hawkins backed by rhythm section mates Nat King Cole, Oscar Moore, John Kirby and Max Roach. Two of the four titles recorded by this group on March 30, 1945 have vocals by jazzwoman Kay Starr. During this period the King Cole Trio was at the height of their powers as a unit. While the leader's excellent vocals were now beginning to take center stage, the instrumental tracks, for example "A Pile O' Cole" and "A Trio Grooves in Brooklyn" are solid swinging small band jazz at its finest. The three instrumentals that close out this compilation are similarly rewarding. Two of them, Jacques Offenbach's "Barcarolle" and that gentle air from the 1890s, Edward MacDowell's "To a Wild Rose," were not issued to the public until years later. The third tune recorded that day, a flashy treatment of Maceo Pinkard's "Sweet Georgia Brown," came out on a 78 rpm platter as Capitol 239. It will satisfy anyone looking for a rousing example of how this trio sounded with the throttle wide open. arwulf arwulf

WINGY MANONE – 1944-1946 | The Classics Chronological Series – 1412 (2006) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Volume eight in the Classics complete chronologically reissued recordings of Wingy Manone documents the singing trumpeter's recording activity during a time period extending from July 1944 to March 1946. Manone, a hard-swinging, husky voiced hipster with New Orleans roots, is at his best on a very funny rendition of "O Sole Mio," the rather libidinous "Where Can I Find a Cherry (For My Banana Split)?" and Slim Gaillard's "Cement Mixer," which Wingy makes sound like it was written expressly for him. Of all the instrumentalists who participated in these recordings, it is the clarinetists who seem to be pointing in a futuristic direction; not so much the merry Matty Matlock but rather Joe Marsala and Hank D'Amico, traditionally based individuals who were in the process of branching out onto adventuresome and distinctly modern stylistic turf. In addition to Wingy (and certain rather overbearing bandmembers whose chatty outbursts clutter up an otherwise enjoyable "Salt Pork West Virginia"), vocals are by Kay Starr and Kay Kyser's Gloria Wood. arwulf arwulf

KAY STARR - The Ultimate Kay Starr (2003) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The Ultimate Kay Starr, British EMI's collection of Kay Starr material from her lengthy Capitol years, presents a solid track selection, though annotation errors abound and the compilers attempt to pass off Capitol versions of her biggest hits -- "The Rock & Roll Waltz," "Wheel of Fortune" -- as the real things. Starr's Capitol recordings were generally excellent, brassy sides, angling toward the pop audience but with plenty of power and swing to attract jazz fans. Although she usually charted with inoffensive pop covers like "Ghost Riders in the Sky," "Changing Partners," and "Singing the Blues," Starr sang dozens of superior songs as well: "On the Street Where You Live," "Side By Side," "On a Slow Boat to China." She also showcases her Billie Holiday influence with versions of "Lover Man" and "When a Woman Loves a Man." (The latter is accidentally listed as the Percy Sledge chestnut "When a Man Loves a Woman," and Starr's version of the Leroy Van Dyke country hit "Walk on By" is mistakenly attributed to Bacharach/David.) As for the perennials, "Wheel of Fortune" is a faithful remake (though still a remake) and "The Rock & Roll Waltz" comes complete with a chintzy synthesizer. by John Bush
