Most of Nancy Wilson's '60s releases for Capitol were high quality, including this, her fourth album. Hello Young Lovers contains Wilson's standard program of easy swingers and ballads that show off her impeccable phrasing while sporting George Shearing's luxurious string charts in hits hits like "Little Girl Blue" and "Back in Your Own Backyard." One also hears Wilson's burgeoning talent for vocal drama as she evokes a variety of moods on "Miss Otis Regrets" and "Little Girl Blue." Her seamless blending of Dinah Washington's bluesy delivery and Sarah Vaughan's seraphic tone also emerges as a talent that would fully flower on 1967's Welcome to My Love. For this recording, though, the listening pleasure is found mostly in her signature urbane pop sound. Stephen Cook

NANCY WILSON - The Best of Nancy Wilson : The Jazz and Blues Sessions (1996) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Nancy Wilson's not the first name in bluesy jazz (check out Dinah Washington and Joe Williams for that), but she usually can enliven the form with her sophisticated and sultry style. That's made clear on her rendition of "Stormy Monday Blues," where she eschews blues clichés in favor of a husky airiness, at once referencing a lowdown mood and infusing it with a sense of buoyancy. This split is nicely essayed on Capitol's Blues and Jazz Sessions, as half the tracks ooze with Wilson's cocktail blues tone and the other find the jazz-pop chanteuse in a summery and swinging mood. Ranging from the big band blues of "I've Got Your Number" to the lilting bossa nova "Wave," Wilson handles all the varying dynamics and musical settings with aplomb. Featuring cuts from her '60s prime with the likes of Cannonball Adderley, Oliver Nelson, George Shearing, Gerald Wilson, and a host of top sidemen, this best-of disc offers a fine, off-the-beaten-path overview of Wilson's Capitol heyday. by Stephen Cook

The combination of these Nancy Wilson albums, Hollywood: My Way and Broadway: My Way, provide pleasant, easy listening interpretations of Broadway and Hollywood standards. These 24 tracks -- including "Tonight" from West Side Story, "Moon River" from Breakfast at Tiffany's, and "Days of Wine and Roses" from Days of Wine and Roses -- hold up exceptionally well. The LPs were originally released on Capitol Records in 1963 and 1964, and had been out of print until EMI reissued them on a compact disc in 2001. by Al Campbell

NANCY WILSON - R.S.V.P. (Rare Songs, Very Personal) (2004) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Nancy Wilson's R.S.V.P. (Rare Songs, Very Personal) is her duets album, but unlike other recent releases by singers in this format, which feature two vocalists (and often oddly matched ones, at that), most of the pairings here are with instrumentalists like George Shearing, Toots Thielemans, Phil Woods, and Gary Burton, which means this remains very much Wilson's baby, dominated by her hushed and elegant vocals. Only two tracks feature other vocalists, one of which, a saccharine cover of Marvin Gaye's "Why Did I Choose You" sung with Kenny Lattimore, is worth a plea to the gods to let Gaye return to this veil of tears and give Wilson a worthy singing partner. Less pop than her recent outings, R.S.V.P. is mostly made up of ballads, highlighted by a wonderful version of Gordon Jenkins' "Goodbye" and the elegant, late-night regret of "Blame It on My Youth" which closes out the set, although Wilson steps up and swings on at least one track, the vibrant "Day In, Day Out." This might not be the greatest album of her half-century-long career, but it isn't an embarrassment, either (which can't always be said about some of the other duet projects major vocalists have released in recent years), and it shows that Wilson can still wring every last emotion on earth out of a ballad -- then return to sing the second verse. by Steve Leggett

NANCY WILSON - Turned To Blue (2006) APE (image+.cue), lossless
On Nancy Wilson's previous album, 2004's R.S.V.P., the legendary vocalist teamed up with a given instrumentalist on each track. She must have liked the formula, because she's done it again on Turned to Blue. Here the oft-honored jazz singer leaves room in each number -- save for the title track, a Maya Angelou poem set to music and arranged by Jay Ashby -- for a different soloist, bringing in such heavyweights as Hubert Laws on flute, saxists Jimmy Heath, Andy Snitzer, Bob Mintzer (who appears to be summoning Stan Getz on the opening number, Gordon Jenkins' "This Is All I Ask"), James Moody and Tom Scott, pianist Dr. Billy Taylor, and steel pans player Andy Narrell, among others. Working with configurations ranging from classic big band (Duke Ellington's "Take Love Easy") to trio-plus-guest-soloist ("Knitting Class"), Wilson applies her seasoned but still flexible pipes to material both old and new, straddling the fence between adult contemporary/pop and the more demanding jazz of her earlier career. Heavy on the ballads, and confined nearly exclusively to love songs, Turned to Blue finds Nancy Wilson right where she ought to be nearly half a century into her recording career. by Jeff Tamarkin
