Although the sheer scope of this double-CD roundup of all of Dizzy's Victor sessions places it most obviously within the evolution of bebop, it is absolutely essential to Latin jazz collections as well. Here listeners find the discographical launching pad of Afro-Cuban jazz on December 22, 1947, when Cuban conguero Chano Pozo added his galvanic congas and bongos to Gillespie's big band for the first time on record. One can feel the explosive effect of Pozo's subdivisions of the beat, rhythmic incantations, and grooves on the band's bebop charts. Though the musicians' styles aren't much affected, and Pozo does most of the adapting to bebop rather than vice versa, the foundation has clearly shifted. Alas, aside from recorded live gigs, Pozo only made eight tracks with the band -- four on December 22 and four more eight days later, just before the second Musicians Union recording ban kicked in. Yet even after Pozo's murder the following year, Gillespie continued to expand his Latin experiments, using two Latin percussionists who brought more rhythmic variety to the sound of tunes like "Guarachi Guaro" (later popularized by Cal Tjader as "Soul Sauce") and even commercial ballads like "That Old Black Magic." The reprocessing of these recordings from late in the 78 rpm era through the CEDAR process sounds a bit harsh, though less so than most of RCA's earlier desecrations of vault material using NoNOISE. Even so, this remains the best way to acquire these seminal Latin jazz tracks. Richard S. Ginell Tracklist + Credits :

CHARLIE PARKER & DIZZY GILLESPIE — Diz 'N Bird At Carnegie Hall (1997) The Performance Series | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Nine years after Benny Goodman's groundbreaking concert, bebop finally came to Carnegie Hall. Most notable on this 1997 CD (which contains music that has been reissued many times, often incoherently) is the meeting between altoist Charlie Parker and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. Joined by the underrecorded piano of John Lewis, bassist Al McKibbon and the slightly overrecorded drums of Joe Harris, Bird and Diz generate some real fireworks on five songs, and Parker's rendition of "Confirmation," and the CD's high point, is definitive and memorable. The remainder of the set (ten selections including "Cool Breeze," "One Bass Hit," "Cubano-Be, Cubano-Bop" and "Things to Come") features the Gillespie big band in typically spirited form. Of particular interest are a few numbers ("Relaxin' at Camarillo," which was arranged by George Russell, "Hot House," and "Toccata for Trumpet") that were never recorded in the studio by the big band. Classic bebop. Scott Yanow
Nota :
Recorded live at Carnegie Hall on September 29, 1947.
Tracks 1-5 were performed by a quintet; tracks 6-15 were performed by a big band. Tracklist + Credits :

DIZZY GILLESPIE AND HIS ORCHESTRA – 1947-1949 | The Classics Chronological Series – 1102 (2000) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Classics #1102 focuses on the explosive years of 1947-1949 when Dizzy Gillespie created some of the most innovative big band recordings, combining bebop and Afro-Cuban rhythms (courtesy of percussionist Chano Pozo). These sessions, recorded for Victor in December 1947, 1948, and early 1949, include future Dizzy standards "Manteca," "Cubana Be," and "Cubana Bop." The roster of musicians Gillespie employed played an important part in the shaping of modern jazz: Yusef Lateef, John Lewis (in one of his earliest sessions), Kenny Clarke, and Cecil Payne. With arrangements by Tadd Dameron, George Russell, Gil Fuller, Gerald Wilson, and the vocals of Johnny Hartman, Kenny "Pancho" Haygood, and Joe Carroll, volume four of Dizzy's chronological recording career is highly recommended. BUCK CLAYTON – 1945-1947 | The Chronogical Classics – 968 (1997) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Buck Clayton played smooth trumpet, warm and precise every step of the way. The first session included here appeared under the nominal leadership of Count Basie's rhythm guitarist, Freddie Green. After Lucky Thompson introduces "I'm in the Mood for Love," Sylvia Sims sings the lyric in attractive, easygoing tones. The flip side, an uncredited original called "Sugar Hips," is a typical mid-1945 exercise in what was at the time called both "rebop" and "bebop." Swing was now ready to morph into music of greater rhythmic and harmonic complexity. This track provides a fine example of Shadow Wilson's superb handling of hi-hat and drums. Sammy Benskin demonstrates a fine, muscular pianism. Dicky Wells seems to enjoy riding along on a tide of what were at the time decisively modern changes. Recorded exactly one month later for the small-time Melrose label, the Buck Clayton Quintet session introduces tenor man Flip Phillips, with Teddy Wilson appearing as "Theodocius," roundly supported by Slam Stewart and Danny Alvin. After a snappy romp through "Diga Diga Doo," "Love Me or Leave Me" is taken at a much more relaxed tempo than usual. This gives everyone a chance to savor the melody rather than chasing about. "We're in the Money" bounces along in an updated groove, much hipper than the Busby Berkeley original. Flip is exceptionally helpful here. The date closes with a stunningly solid piece of blues bearing Buck Clayton's initials. Slam bows his bass in an uncharacteristically low register, and the combination of horns and piano during the out chorus is really amazing. The only thing that could top it is the J.C. Heard Quintet session recorded for Keynote on August 17, 1945. Buck and Flip are now backed by three of the best rhythm section mates in all of early modern jazz: Johnny Guarnieri, Milt Hinton, and the immaculate J.C. Heard. The quintet's approach to Jerome Kern's "Why Do I Love You" is refreshingly brisk and inventive. "All My Life" is still sometimes associated with Fats Waller; in 1945 a lot of people probably thought that he had written it. What you get here is a magnificent sensitive rendering, beautifully phrased. "Groovin' With J.C." begins with jaunty walking bass and eases into a steady lope, very groovy as the title implies. "What's the Use" further demonstrates the perfect balance of this little band, wherein the rhythm section is so strong that the horns fit in uncommonly well. Nobody ever gets stepped on or overshadowed. As for the Hot Record Society sessions, there was always a lot of "original" material on these dates, and some of the melodies sound like attempts at modernity without a whole lot of innovation. This is not to imply that the music is inferior. It's just a bit short on genuine melodic substance. The Big Four session is mostly memorable for Tiny Grimes and his electrified guitar, while the Big Eight date is notable for the combined presence of trombonists Dicky Wells and Trummy Young. Funny thing: "Sentimental Summer" has a bridge identical to that of "I Don't Want to Set the World On Fire." A fascinating addition to this CD is a children's record narrated by the actor Canada Lee. This 1947 recording traces the root system of jazz back to Africa (with authentic African drumming and chanting!) describing abduction, enslavement, emancipation, and the development of jazz in the 20th century. During part two of the story, Buck Clayton, Ed Hall, Teddy Wilson, and Jimmy Crawford provide a blues and a hot stomp. This is an uncommonly hip kiddie record, infinitely more accurate and intelligent than anything else on the market in its day. How thoughtful of the producers to include it on Buck Clayton's CD. arwulf arwulf

EARL HINES – 1949-1952 | The Classics Chronological Series – 1288 (2003) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
This disc begins with five excellent recordings that Earl Hines made for the Royal Jazz label in Paris. These joyous, optimistic trio renderings of "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Fine and Dandy" were part of a sizable bundle of great music recorded on November 4, 1949, the balance of which occupies the final eight tracks of Classics 1120. Two days later, Hines created three interesting piano solos for Royal: a relaxed revisit with Maceo Pinkard's old-fashioned love song "Sugar," a tough and powerful remake of "Boogie Woogie on the St. Louis Blues," and "Singing for My French Brothers," during which the pianist scats amiably. In July of 1950, Hines recorded eight outstanding trio performances to be issued on Columbia's newly developed long-playing 33-and-1/3-rpm format. The combination of Hines with bassist Al McKibbon and the impeccable J.C. Heard was remarkably fruitful. "These Foolish Things" seems to unfold as gradually as the dawn, "Velvet Moon" and "When I Dream of You" are slow and reflective, and the rest of this trio's work swings marvelously. "Diane" develops something like a Cuban rhythm halfway through, then prances the rest of the way home. In December of 1952 Hines was able to wax seven sides for the D'Oro label, which was created especially to record the Earl Hines Sextet, with a front line of trumpeter Jonah Jones, trombonist Bennie Green, and Aaron Sachs, who played clarinet and tenor sax. Vocalists heard here are Helen Merrill (this was her very first appearance on record), Lonnie Sattin (who bellows and croons like an Eckstine caricature), and a soulful Etta Jones (who has a lot of fun hollering "Stop"). Hines himself sings over a rhumba called "Ella's Fella," and "Whirl on a Whirl" also has a bit of that rhythmic Caribbean energy running through it. "Green's Corner" -- which in fact uses the bridge from "Love Is Just Around the Corner" -- is a friendly study for trumpet, tenor sax, and trombone with rhythm accompaniment, including brief solos from bassist Tommy Potter and Earl "Fatha" Hines. arwulf arwulf

PETE JOHNSON – 1947-1949 | The Classics Chronological Series – 1110 (2000) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless
Classics #1110 is the fourth installment chronicling 21 final key recordings of boogie woogie pianist Pete Johnson. 1947-1949 found Johnson leading three different quartets (the second with Al Mckibbon on bass and J.C. Heard on drums) for the Apollo, Modern, and French Jazz Selection labels, while the final session features a sextet on six tracks, blistering through the excellent "Rocket 88 Boogie, Parts 1 and 2" for the Down Beat/Swingtime label. These sessions have a common thread in the predominate use of guitar from Charles Norris, Carl Lynch, Johnny Rogers, and Herman Mitchell thoroughly featured alongside Johnson's piano throughout. Soon after these sessions Johnson left his West Coast home for Buffalo where he essentially retired, showing up occasionally at the odd live appearance or on other musicians' sessions. Al Campbell

SARAH VAUGHAN – 1947-1949 | The Classics Chronological Series – 1101 (2000) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Classics #1101 captures Sarah Vaughan early in her career from 1947-1949. These Musicraft and early Columbia sessions paved the way for her future success as a leading jazz vocalists. Featuring 23 tracks, Vaughan is backed by orchestras led by Ted Dale, Richard Maltby, Joe Lippman, and Hugo Winterhalter, while also recording more jazz oriented material with the Jimmy Jones Quartet featuring Al Mckibbon on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. While these combination string arrangements/jazz sessions only contain a handful of essentials ("Just Friends," "I Cried For You," "Nature Boy") they represent the beginning of that commercial balance Sarah Vaughan would successfully bounce back and forth between during her long career. ANITA O'DAY – 1950-1952 | The Classics Chronological Series – 1336 (2003) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Compilations abound that center on Anita O'Day's work of the '40s and early '50s, before she set about recording one of the liveliest string of LPs ever seen on the planet (from 1955's This Is Anita to 1962's That Is Anita). With 1950-1952, the seminal Classics label reissued a string of titles that haven't seen light very often, a selection of her recordings for labels including London, Clef, and Norgran (the last two were Verve-associated labels). While they stand nowhere near the twin pinnacles of her career -- her big-band heyday and her solo revival yet to come -- O'Day recorded much wonderful music during these two years. In 1952 alone, she recorded three excellent sessions (the final two-thirds of the program), including a swinging date with her Krupa bandmate Roy Eldridge in New York and a sublime Chicago appearance with Roy Kral. TEDDY WILSON – 1947-1950 | The Classics Chronological Series – 1224 (2002) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
The eleventh volume in the extensive Classics Teddy Wilson chronology combines the last of his Musicraft recordings, cut in December 1947, with a pair of trio dates for Columbia that took place during the summer of 1950. As all of this excellent music has languished in obscurity for years, the producers of this series have once again done the world a gracious favor by taking the time to compile and reissue it for 21st century ears. The first four tracks, waxed on December 3, 1947, feature trumpeter Buck Clayton in perfect accord with Wilson, bassist Billy Taylor, Jr. and drummer Denzil Best. Between December 15 and 18, Wilson and Taylor returned to the studio with drummer William "Keg" Purnell to cut eight more sides, four of them garlanded with sweet vocals by Kay Penton. Because of his teaching duties at Juilliard, steady work as house pianist on the air at WNEW and periodic live performances with Benny Goodman, there are sizeable gaps in Teddy Wilson's discography during the period between 1946 and 1952. The largest of these -- two-and-a-half years -- separate the Musicraft and Columbia recordings heard on this compilation. On June 29, 1950 Teddy Wilson resumed recording as a leader for Columbia records, cutting seven relatively brief tracks with bassist Arvell Shaw and drummer "J.C. Heard." This leg of the chronology closes with four titles recorded on August 25, 1950 with bassist Al McKibbon and drummer Kansas Fields. arwulf arwulf

WYNONIE HARRIS – 1945-1947 | The Classics Chronological Series – 1013 (1998) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
The second Classics CD to feature blues singer Wynonie Harris' recordings as a leader finds him in the period right before he signed with the King label. The five four-song sessions on this disc (all quite jazz oriented) were cut for Hamp-Tone, Bullet, and Aladdin. First, Harris (who sounds quite enthusiastic in every setting) sings three numbers (including a two-part "Hey! Ba-Ba-Re-Bop") with a combo taken from the Lionel Hampton big band. The Bullet date was quite rare. Recorded in Nashville, it finds Harris backed by local players including Sun Ra in his first recording. Ra's piano is well featured throughout including on "Dig This Boogie." Harris is also heard with a Leonard Feather-organized band that includes trumpeter Joe Newman, altoist Tab Smith, and tenor-saxophonist Allen Eager ("Mr. Blues Jumped the Rabbit" is the best-known selection), with an obscure backup band in New York (including for "Ghost of a Chance," an odd departure with a vocal group) and sharing the spotlight with Big Joe Turner on three numbers (including a slightly disorganized two-part "Battle of the Blues"). Throughout, Wynonie Harris sounds like he was ready for stardom. Recommended. Scott Yanow

BENNY CARTER | DIZZY GILLESPIE - Carter, Gillespie, Inc. (1976) lp | 32bits-96hz | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless
Although they were from different musical generations (Benny Carter was born ten years before Dizzy Gillespie), it is little wonder that the swing altoist and the bop trumpeter could match up so well on this sextet session; they were quite compatible. Surprisingly, the material they chose to perform could have been better (there is only one Carter composition among the six songs) but on "Broadway" and "A Night in Tunisia," the two veteran hornmen (along with pianist Tommy Flanagan and guitarist Joe Pass) sound at their best. THE GEORGE SHEARING QUINTET WITH DAKOTA STATON - In the Night (1957-2003) RM | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
With its progressive-leaning jazz and modernist blues vocals, In the
Night was the prototype for the piano-vocals collaboration record that
George Shearing would remake with Peggy Lee, Nat King Cole, and Nancy
Wilson while at Capitol (and many others afterwards). In July 1957, just
after Dakota Staton's immense success with "The Late, Late Show,"
Capitol recorded two of its biggest jazz stars together for what would
turn out to be one of the finest teamings in either's career. Staton
appears on every other song, lending her blend of post-bop vocal prowess
and late-night melodrama to a set of well-chosen songs including "In
the Night" and "I Hear Music." (Ironically, the version of "The Late,
Late Show" heard here is an instrumental.) Shearing and Staton are
joined by the pianist's group at the time, including Emil Richards on
vibes, the splendid Toots Thielemans on guitar, and a few features for
Latin percussionist Armando Peraza. The group's finest features are the
opener, "From Rags to Richards," a fine Shearing original with excellent
solos from Richards and Shearing, and Ray Bryant's "Pawn Ticket," with
fine work from Thielemans and Richards. by John Bush

LOREZ ALEXANDRIA - Alexandria the Great (1964-2004) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Lorez Alexandria has not received her due as a jazz singer, probably
due in part to her long layoff from recording (11 years) for nationally
distributed labels following these 1964 studio sessions for Impulse! But
the vocalist is in top form throughout each of these three sessions,
each with a different group of musicians. Her soulful singing also hints
at her gospel background in places, though her clear enunciation,
ability to swing, and touch of charm make her a delight to hear. Most of
the arrangements are fairly concise, so the longer tracks shine just a
bit brighter. Her swinging take of "Get Me to the Church On Time" is
playful, while her soulfulness comes across in the snappy take of "I'm
Through With Love," the latter featuring guitarist Ray Crawford. This is
an excellent introduction to a fine vocalist worthy of much wider
recognition. Ken Dryden

CAL TJADER - Tjader Plays Tjazz (1954-1998) RM / MONO / APE (image+.cue), lossless
In a change of pace, for this recording vibraphonist Cal Tjader recorded cool-toned bop without a Latin rhythm section. Half of the ten songs (mostly jazz standards) feature Tjader switching to drums (his original instrument) in a quartet also including the obscure trombonist Bob Collins, guitarist Eddie Duran and bassist Al McKibbon. Tjader is back on vibes for the quintet selections with tenor saxophonist Brew Moore, pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Eugene Wright and drummer Bobby White. He sounds right at home in both formats and the swinging quintet numbers in particular are a good reason to search for this valuable album. by Scott Yanow

CAL TJADER - Cal Tjader's Latin Concert (1956-1991) RM / APE (image+.cue), lossless
Latin Concert is a pretty good sampling of vibraphonist Cal Tjader's influential Latin jazz of the 1950s. With pianist Vince Guaraldi, bassist Al McKibbon, Willie Bobo on timbales and drums, and the congas of Mongo Santamaria, Tjader's impressive unit performs four of his catchy originals and two by Santamaria in addition to Latinized versions of "The Continental" and Ray Bryant's "Cubano Chant." This highly rhythmic music is hard to dislike. by Scott Yanow

CAL TJADER - Monterey Concerts (1959-1990) RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
This two-LP set is the definitive early Cal Tjader album and one of the high points of his career. For a Monterey concert that was considered a preview concert for the 1959 Monterey Jazz Festival, Tjader was teamed up with flutist and altoist Paul Horn, pianist Lonnie Hewitt, bassist Al McKibbon, Willie Bobo (on drums and timbales), and percussionist Mongo Santamaria. Their renditions of Latinized jazz tunes along with a few Latin originals practically define the idiom. Highlights include "Doxy," one of the earliest versions of Santamaria's "Afro Blue" (pre-dating John Coltrane's famous rendition by four years), "Love Me or Leave Me," and "A Night in Tunisia." Essential music for everyone's Latin jazz collection. by Scott Yanow

CAL TJADER - Latino com Cal Tjader (1962-1994) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Vibraphonist Cal Tjader is heard leading five different groups throughout this set, but the identities of the flutists, bassists, and pianists are less important than knowing that Tjader, Willie Bobo (on drums and timbales), and the great conga player Mongo Santamaria are on every selection. The music really cooks, with torrid percussion, inspired ensembles, and occasional solos from the sidemen (which sometimes include pianists Lonnie Hewitt or Vince Guaraldi, bassist Al McKibbon, and flutist Paul Horn). Highlights include Latinized versions of "Key Largo" and "September Song," "Night in Tunisia," "The Continental," and a definitive version of Santamaria's "Afro Blue." This is Latin jazz at its finest. by Scott Yanow
