THE LINCOLN CENTER JAZZ ORCHESTRA WITH WYNTON MARSALIS - Big Train (1999) APE (image+.cue), lossless

On 1999's Big Train, Marsalis tries on the mantle of Duke Ellington in the latter's centennial year and finds that it suits him. A 52-minute big band suite modeled after Ellington's long-form essays, it purports to evoke the moods, sounds and feelings of a cross-country train trip with selections named after a train's various cars. Like an Ellington suite, the sections run together; after the striking "All Aboard," you're in Ellington country, right down to the plunger mute wah-wah riffs. "Union Pacific" paraphrases "Rockin' in Rhythm"; the ballad "Sleeper Car" evokes Johnny Hodges and Tricky Sam Nanton quite explicitly. Inevitably, there's a track called "Night Train"; thankfully, its bossa nova flavor has nothing to do with Duke's piece. Marsalis has mastered the Ellington idiom, writing and organizing the piece skillfully and getting the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra to play with precision and emotion. Yet the one thing that Ellington (and Billy Strayhorn) could do and Marsalis has yet to demonstrate is the ability to come up with a big, memorable tune; there's craft, emotion, and swing, but little else to take home with you. If you didn't know that this work was about trains, you might not guess it; you can't really feel the rocking, chugging, streamlined motion of the rails in this work. There is fine soloing all around in the hard bop tradition from Wessell Anderson, Victor Goines, Wycliffe Gordon, Ted Nash and Walter Blanding, Jr., though the liner fails to note which of the multiple tenor, alto, trombone players are soloing on which tracks. But overall, this is one of Marsalis' better extended form essays. Richard S. Ginell

LINCOLN CENTER JAZZ ORCHESTRA - Portraits by Ellington (1992) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The stellar musicians who make up the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra are dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of America's own original musical art form. Since Wynton Marsalis joined the Lincoln Center as artistic director in 1990, the orchestra has celebrated each year the contributions of one of jazz's greatest luminaries: Duke Ellington. This CD was recorded the year after the arrival of the New Orleans trumpet player, whose vision it was to preserve and celebrate the music of the early lions of jazz. The personnel on the CD are too numerous to list individually, but among their number are Marcus Belgrave on trumpet and flugelhorn, Reginald Veal on bass, Wycliffe Gordon on trombone, and Milt Grayson on vocals. New Orleans clarinet player Dr. Michael White sits in as the guest of his friend and musical colleague Wynton Marsalis. Together, the orchestra paints a beautiful picture of the elegant Duke Ellington and his music. Many of the selections are Ellington's portraits in music of some of his favorite people, including "Portrait of Louis Armstrong," "Portrait of Bert Williams," and the Ellington/Strayhorn composition "Total Jazz (Portrait of Ella Fitzgerald)." Other selections range from the elegiac "Thanks for the Beautiful Land Along the Delta" to the exuberant "Second Line." The recording ends with the 27-minute "Liberian Suite," the movements of which capture the many moods of one of America's greatest jazz composers. The quality and sophistication of the performance prove why the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra are a favorite of New Yorkers and international visitors. Their musical portrait of the great Duke Ellington proves worthy of his name. Sharon Witmer

LINCOLN CENTER JAZZ ORCHESTRA WITH WYNTON MARSALIS - Cast Of Cats (2003) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This CD is different than it appears at first glance. Although Cast of Cats is listed as being by the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, in reality the 13 selections, all originals by Marsalis, feature one musician apiece with backing by pianist Bill Charlap, bassist Carlos Henríquez, and drummer Herlin Riley. In other words, these are a series of quartet performances. Trumpeter Marsalis is only heard on the opening "Raise Yo' Heads," a fairly simple swing piece with a New Orleans feel. In addition there is one feature apiece for baritone saxophonist Joe Temperly, trumpeter Ryan Kisor, tenor saxophonist Walter Blanding, pianist Charlap, trombonist Andre Hayward, Ted Nash (tenor, alto, and flute), trombonist Ronald Weztray, altoist Wess Anderson, bassist Henríquez, trombonist Vincent Gardner, trumpeter Marcus Printup, and Victor Goines on tenor. The music ranges from advanced swing, to quirky hard bop originals and moody ballads. It is doubtful if any of Marsalis' originals will become standards in the future, since none of the melodies are particularly memorable although the musicians play well enough, mostly without showing a great deal of individuality. Available from the Brooks Brothers clothing chain, Cast of Cats is listenable although it falls far short of being essential. Scott Yanow

JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA with WYNTON MARSALIS - The Abyssinian Mass (2016) 2CD | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

A majestic, clamorous work of spiritually motivated, large ensemble jazz and gospel, Wynton Marsalis' 2016 The Abyssinian Mass is a truly epic offering. Recorded live in 2013 at Lincoln Center, The Abyssinian Mass is a composition commemorating the 200th anniversary of Harlem's Abyssinian Baptist Church in 2008. It's an extensive work that finds Marsalis attempting to draw connections between secular and sacred music. Helping to bring this composition to life is a combined ensemble of jazz and gospel musicians, including the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Damien Sneed, and Chorale le Chateau. Conceptually speaking, Marsalis' composition is designed to flow like a church service, with movements broken down into sections like "Call to Worship," "Processional," "Responsive Reading," and, of course, a "Sermon," delivered here in three parts by Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts III.

For fans of Marsalis' jazz-centric recordings, there's a lot to chew on. There are plenty of swaggering, exuberant solos and the rhythm section is rarely playing anything less than an infectious, foot-tapping beat. That said, this is a lengthy recording, spread over two discs, mixing instrumental and spoken word sections alongside commandingly sung ensemble sections from Choral le Chateau. What's so invigorating about Marsalis' work is how he successfully intertwines the more traditional, classical-influenced gospel sections with the raucous, swinging, and bluesy jazz sections. Tracks like "Call to Worship" and "Processional: We Are on Our Way" find the JLCO trumpets colliding in shiny, Teutonic brilliance over drummer Ali Jackson's roiling, earthy swing, while Choral le Chateau soars as one behind them. Regardless of your religious inclinations, The Abyssinian Mass is an ambitious, uplifting production that fits nicely alongside Marsalis' similarly inclined albums In This House, On This Morning and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Blood on the Fields. JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA | WYNTON MARSALIS SEPTET - United We Swing : Best of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Galas (2018) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Wynton Marsalis' exuberant 2018 concert collection United We Swing: Best of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Galas brings together a handful of live performances the trumpeter gave on behalf of Jazz at Lincoln Center between 2003 and 2007. Recorded first at New York's Apollo Theater and later at JALC's Frederick P. Rose Hall, these previously unreleased gala performances featured Marsalis and his septet alongside a bevy of special guests, including such luminaries as Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, James Taylor, John Legend, and many more. Of course, all of the performances hinge upon the superb interplay between Marsalis' septet bandmates, including at various times drummer Herlin Riley, bassist Reginald Veal, pianist Dan Nimmer, saxophonist Wessell "Warmdaddy" Anderson, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, and clarinetist Victor Goines, to name just a few of the superb musicians on display here. What's particularly engaging about these gala performances is how successfully Marsalis is able to blend each guest artist's own distinctive style into his septet's swinging, traditional New Orleans jazz aesthetic. It's a sound that works best with guests like the legendary vocal gospel band Blind Boys of Alabama, whose "The Last Time" finds them matching Marsalis' roiling brass band energy with their own earthy, R&B-soaked tones. Similarly captivating is Ray Charles' greasy spotlight on "I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town," in which his vibrant singing is dynamically accented by Marsalis' own rounded, bluesy, plunger-muted asides. Also surprisingly effective are collaborations with less jazz-oriented performers, like John Mayer's yearning, soulful rendition of his own "I'm Gonna Find Another You" and Broadway superstar Audra McDonald's leonine, show-stopping performance of Duke Ellington's "Creole Love Call." Even when Marsalis stretches a song far beyond its original conception, as with Lenny Kravitz's expansive, slow blues reading of "Are You Gonna Go My Way," the results work to bridge artistic connections rather than spotlight any differences. Ultimately, it's that generous artistic connectivity on display throughout United We Swing that makes it such a joyous experience. Matt Collar
