ELENI KARAINDROU : Ulysses' Gaze (1995) APE (image+.cue), lossless

Eleni Karaindrou's long, fruitful partnership with Greek filmmaker Theo Angelopoulos has given birth to several scores for his award-winning films. However, perhaps no previous Karaindrou score contains the evocative power of her compositions for Ulysses' Gaze, the film about memory, artistic quests, and war that won the Grand Prix du Jury at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival. An extended suite for viola, oboe, accordion, trumpet, horn, cello, voice, and string orchestra, Ulysses' Gaze embodies the themes of longing, nostalgia, loss, memory, and obsession that are the film's subjects. The string orchestra is employed to provide a wavering dark current beneath the bright notes of Kim Kashkashian's viola and the wind players, which bloom above like the icons of memory. The theme associated with "A," the central character who serves as the Ulysses of the film's title, is a constant repetitive framework upon which small vignettes of European folk music and elegiac song are built. The effect mirrors the film's journey across a portion of Europe torn apart by political divides and war, but more importantly provides small fragments of the pure images of peace and beauty that are so essential for Ulysses to find. by Stacia Proefrock

ELENI KARAINDROU - Euripides : Trojan Women (2001) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Eleni Karaindrou has made her reputation working with Greek instruments and musical forms for theater and move pieces, and this can only add more luster to her burgeoning reputation. Trojan Women is a series of short, impressionistic pieces, mostly instrumental, although some feature a chorus. Working on a play that's Classical, her choice of Classical instruments makes perfect sense, while her sense of form, working in such confined time strictures, is dense and demanding -- while still managing the remarkable balancing act of leaving plenty of space in the sound. In other words, it's atmospheric, and fits in very well with the ECM esthetic. The question of how successful it is as a free-standing piece of music is a different question. By it's nature, there's little development and movement in the pieces, which simply stand as short sketches. But accept it for what it is, and you have something wonderful. by Chris Nickson

ELENI KARAINDROU : Dust of Time (Music for the film by Theo Angelopoulos) (2009) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Theo Angelopoulos' 2008 film Dust of Time deals with the loss experienced by two Greek lovers separated by the Second World War, and the ways their loss is felt for generations. Eleni Karaindrou's atmospheric score is appropriately melancholy; she draws heavily on the folk traditions of Greece and Eastern Europe to evoke the sadness that permeates the film. She has an orchestra and an assortment of soloists, including folk musicians, at her disposal, but the majority of her tracks use only a few instruments: harp, violin, and accordion or bassoon, oboe, and cello, for instance. These small ensembles create a mood of intimacy that highlights the personal consequences of the larger devastation caused by the war. All of the music is either modal or in a minor key, so the mood is unrelieved by levity or joy. With the variety of instrumental combinations and the brevity of the tracks, the uniformity of mood isn't a problem. Karaindrou has an exceedingly light touch in her instrumentation, and she finds a broad range of ways to express grief, foreboding, and unfulfilled yearning. The performances, by the soloists and the Hellenic Radio Television Orchestra, led by Alexandros Myrat, are jewel-like in their delicacy and clarity. ECM's sound is immaculate, as is characteristic of the exemplary work of Manfred Eicher. The soundtrack is a lovely reminder of the film and should appeal to listeners looking for an album of gentle, contemplative, melancholy music with an Eastern European flavor. by Stephen Eddins

ELENI KARAINDROU : Concert in Athens (2013) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The music of Greek film and theater score composer Eleni Karaindrou draws on elements of classical music and jazz, and sometimes on traditional Greek music, but it's not easy to classify as any of these. Karaindrou relies on small ensembles, with or without a small orchestra, creating a distinctive timbre for each piece. The music is low-key, but it's a remarkably flexible language. With Karaindrou herself on piano, top-flight chamber players Kim Kashkashian on viola and Vangelis Christopoulos on oboe, and Jan Garbarek's saxophone providing subtle jazz accents, the music has a remarkable fluid quality. ECM's sound in this live recording is strikingly clear (you can hardly tell it's live, and there's no applause or audience noise), but the label's usual minimalist graphics are a bit annoying here; it would have been helpful to know exactly what scenes the pieces were intended for: although some of the material (like Tennessee Williams' play The Glass Menagerie) is well known, titles like Laura's Waltz are very general. Still, the music grows on you as its colors emerge on repeated hearings, and the musicians of the Camerata Orchestra under Alexandros Myrat play with both sheen and obvious enjoyment. This is apparently something of a retrospective of Karaindrou's work, and it makes you want to hear more of it. by James Manheim

ELENI KARAINDROU - Medea (2014) 24bits-96hz / FLAC (tracks), lossless

Since her debut with ECM in 1991, composer Eleni Karaindrou has consistently delivered recordings of unquestionable beauty and quality. All noteworthy are her scores for Theo Angelopoulos' films, 2005's grand-scale retrospective Elegy of the Uprooting, and 2010's Concert in Athens, and especially the remarkable Trojan Women, from 2002, a score to accompany Euripides' play in collaboration with stage director Antonis Antypas. Medea, another of the classical Greek dramatist's works, marks their second recorded collaboration for ECM. Karaindrou's music is delivered by a small group: instrumentation includes Constantinople lute and lyra, clarinets, violincello, ney, bendir, and santour. They accompany soloists and/or a 15-voice female choir. The first four pieces here are all instrumental, spare, spatial, warm, and foreboding. "Ceremonial Procession," with bendir, three clarinets, and santour, foreshadows the ensuing tragedy. "On the Way to Exile" brings lute, lyra, santour, bendir, and cello mournfully together; they evoke the sadness that follows betrayal, yet there is something quietly sinister in it, too. Karaindrou's is the first voice we hear in "Medea's Lament 1." Accompanied by the ensemble, she allows Giorgos Cheimonas' modern adaptation of Euripides' words to come from her belly, moving slowly through the stages of human grief -- before giving way to rage. The episodic instrumental music of "Woman in Mourning" introduces her second lament. It gives way to "Loss," before the choir makes their entrance in "Backwards to Their Sources," which announces Medea's return to divine form in order to deliver Jason a physical manifestation of cosmic payback. They act as narrators for the vocal music that remains. Though there is tension in Karaindrou's music, it never erupts; it unfolds. "Love's Great Malevolence" is funereal in tempo as it melds folk sources, classical traditions, and a melody that straddles modernity and antiquity. Violence is swollen into an emotional warning as the choir, accompanied by the added weight of the bendir, opens the way for the voice of soloist Penelope Sergounioti to offer "Do Not Kill Your Children" in vain. Early on, its melody recalls a 20th century rembetika. In "All Hope Is Lost," the choir narrates seemingly from the divine spaces between heaven, earth, and hell, before soloist Sotiria Rouvoli delivers Medea's taunt of Jason and the commencement of her own horrific act. In "Silence," the closer, the band delivers a dirge that undergirds the choir's final lament -- not a moral so much as a statement of sorrow and confusion. Karaindrou's Medea is poetic and fierce, utterly gripping, and beautiful in its earthiness and deliberate lack of dramatic grandeur. The Mediterranean folk traditions employed in her music offer a striking evocation of historical and contemporary terms. Her interpretation serves not only the play, but is ultimately a taut and timeless metaphor for the unanswerable questions and bewilderment with which we react to unspeakable tragedy.

ELENI KARAINDROU : Elegy of the Uprooting (2006) 2CD / FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Eleni Karaindrou has been active for more than three decades as a film composer, creating scores for Weeping Meadow, Eternity and a Day, Voyage to Cythera, and other projects. Elegy of the Uprooting (1982-2004) is a large-scale work for voice, choir, and orchestra, in which themes from Karaindrou's soundtracks and incidental music for the theater are brought together in a more unified format. This live 2005 concert presentation from Athens is as much a retrospective celebration of Karaindrou's artistry as it is an extended cantata-symphony on the theme of dislocation and the plight of refugees, so listeners at first may feel some confusion in how to appreciate the album. Furthermore, fans of ECM's New Series may find that this music is rather conventional, compared to the avant-garde fare the label regularly features. In a sense, this recording may be better suited to fans of traditional eastern European folk music who will find Karaindrou's sorrowful melodies and exotic instrumentation to their liking. Many will recognize the poignant theme By the Sea from its use in a TV ad for Lincoln Financial Group, though nothing else on this double disc is comparably familiar in the United States. On the whole, Elegy of the Uprooting consists of subdued instrumentals in minor keys, often led by the composer from the piano, and sorrowful songs delivered with deep emotion by Maria Farantouri, with support from the ERT Choir and the Camerata Orchestra, conducted by Alexandros Myrat. Because of its consistently somber moods, slow tempos, and long running time, this is a good album to play in the background on overcast days, though its unrelieved melancholy may even be too much for that purpose. ECM's sound is clear and mostly clean, except for a few audience noises.  by Blair Sanderson
