JEREMY STEIG — Wayfaring Stranger (1970-2012) RM | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Wayfaring Stranger is Jeremy Steig's one and only date for Blue Note Records as a leader. Originally issued in 1970, it was produced by Sonny Lester. Steig had been recording as a leader for a number of labels since 1963, including Columbia, Verve (on What’s New, a co-lead date with Bill Evans), and Lester’s Solid State. The lineup here includes longtime cohort and bassist Eddie Gomez, drummer Don Alias, and guitarist Sam Brown. Steig wrote or co-wrote five of the six tunes here. The title track is an expansive interpretation on John Jacob Niles' arrangement of the traditional folk tune. On it, Gomez lays out a strolling vamp, Steig goes to work building on the melody, and Brown comps and fills behind him. Alias colors the backdrop with shimmering brushwork and snare breaks. About three minutes in, Steig and Gomez both begin to take chances and funk up the melody without ever leaving it completely behind, but the group improvisation is at a premium, they move East, West, and even toward Latin inside it. Opener “In the Beginning" commences with a far-flung flute solo on which Steig displays brilliant flourishes with breath and tongue acrobatics. When the band comes it, it’s Gomez laying down proto-jazz funk on the upright and Alias breaking and popping in counter rhythm. “Mint Tea” weds together rock dynamics, soul-jazz, and hard bop vamps. The set’s final two tracks, “All Is One” and “Space,” sound like they belong on a different album, given that they are on-the-spot improvs that focus on tonal and textural investigations that sit firmly in the vanguard with deliberate use of silences as a mode to carry on very inventive conversations. They are anything but difficult to listen to, however; in fact, they’re both gorgeous and reflect how wide-ranging Steig’s (and by turn Gomez’s) vision was for the time.

WALTER DAVIS TRIO — Illumination (1977-1989) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Since Walter Davis, Jr. had relatively few opportunities to lead recording dates of his own, one would hope that conditions would be ideal for the occasional recording session. Sadly, he's stuck with a badly out of tune instrument on this occasion, making it almost excruciating to listen to his performance of his best-known work, the normally exciting hard bop vehicle "Scorpio Rising." Davis utilizes several different rhythm sections, including the likes of Buster Williams, Art Blakey, and Tony Williams. Guest Jeremy Steig's soulful, vibrato-laden flute is added for "Illumination" and trumpeter Charles Sullivan for a brief but haunting duet of Nino Rota's "Theme from 'La Strada'," while percussionist Nana Vasconcelos and rhythm guitarist Milton Frustino are added for the brisk, enchanting samba "Biribinya Nos States." But in spite of his best efforts, the lousy piano badly handicaps Davis' performances. The ironic cover photo, with Davis posing at a toy piano, may have indicated what he thought of the studio keyboard. Ken Dryden

BILL EVANS WITH JEREMY STEIG — Whats New (1969-1995) RM | Serie Verve 24bit Super Best 50 – 4 | FLAC (tracks+.cue) lossless

Fin 1968 le pianiste Bill Evans (1929-1980) met en place un nouveau trio ; le batteur Marty Morell rejoint le contrebassiste Eddie Gomez qui est déjà avec Bill depuis 1966. Ce trio durera jusqu’en 1974. En octobre 1968, ils se produisent au Top Of The Gate, situé au-dessus du Village Gate. Souvent en fin de soirée le flutiste Jeremy Steig s’adjoint au groupe. Bill Evans connaissait Steig depuis 1964 et l’appréciait. Eddie Gomez était très ami avec le flutiste, il venait de participer à l'enregistrement d'un disque de jazz fusion, "Jeremy & The Satyrs", sous la direction du flutiste. Depuis de nombreuses années Bill et Jeremy avaient le projet d’un album conjoint. Bill Evans dans les notes de pochette de cet album rappelle combien il apprécie la flûte, instrument qu’il a pratiqué de nombreuses années. Rendez-vous est donc pris pour un album commun prometteur.
L’album «What’s new», enregistré début 1969, est donc le premier en studio du trio Evans-Gomez-Morell, avec le flutiste en invité. Un Bill Evans plus rageur dès le premier morceau, la composition de Monk «Straight No Chaser», ou encore comme sur un «Autumn Leaves» plein d’énergie, comme une poussée de sève printanière. L’album se conclut avec un «So What» que Bill Evans n’avait pas enregistré* depuis la séance historique avec Miles Davis. Probablement à la demande de Steig, c’est une version nettement plus « speed » qui nous est offerte, Bill Evans semble en retrait.
Disque plaisant certes, mais à l’écoute je ne ressens ni la même spontanéité ni la même complicité que sur l'excellent Flute Fever, premier album du flutiste (en compagnie de Denny Zeitlin au piano). Sur plusieurs morceaux, pendant le solo de Jeremy, le piano est absent. Eddie Gomez occupe une grande place dans cet album, bénéficiant d’un large espace comme soliste et il s’avère très brillant. Bien des années plus tard, à propos de cet album, Marty Morell dans deux interviews (une sur le site Jazzwax et l’autre avec Jan Stevens) laisse entendre que Jeremy Steig n’était pas du tout en forme, un peu ailleurs. Les prises se sont multipliées (près de 30 parfois) et Bill Evans perdait patience. Au final, malgré tout, un bon disque, même si son accouchement a été difficile. Un rendez-vous dont peut-être les protagonistes attendaient trop ? Philippe A

ART FARMER - Crawl Space (1977-2016) RM | Blu-spec | CTI Supreme Collection | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Some of the finer CTI recordings of the late '70s were those led by flugelhornist Art Farmer. Although the emphasis was generally on obscure material (in this case Farmer plays one original, two songs by Dave Grusin and one piece by pianist Fritz Pauer) and often featured musicians who did not normally play together, the results were generally quite rewarding. For this CTI LP (long out-of-print), the focus is almost entirely on Farmer who is joined by keyboardist Grusin, guitarist Eric Gale, flutist Jeremy Steig, either Will Lee or George Mraz on bass and drummer Steve Gadd. THE JEREMY STEIG QUARTET - Flute Fever +1 [1963] FLAC

Reissue with the latest remastering. Comes with liner notes. Fantastic early work from flautist Jeremy Steig – a 60s quartet session for Columbia that came several years before the funky style of some of his later work – and a damn great record, with lots of soulful touches! Part of this has to do with the rhythm section of Ben Tucker on bass and Ben Riley on drums – both of whom put a nice kick in the proceedings, and substantially ground and groove the solo work of Steig's flute and Denny Zeitlin's piano.
On that note, Steig's and Zeitlin's solos are truly outstanding – more than delivering on the feverish promise of the album's title! Titles include "What Is This Thing Called Love?", "So What", "Willow Weep For Me", "Well, You Needn't", "Blue Seven", "Oleo", and "Lover Man". This excellent CD version also includes the bonus first take version of "What Is This Thing Called Love?".
