EMMANUEL PAHUD : JACKY TERRASSON — Into The Blue (2002) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Emmanuel Pahud is an award-winning classical flutist who's also Principal Flute for the Berlin Philharmonic. Jacky Terrasson is an award-winning jazz pianist who's a Principal Original on the scene; uniquely playful and inventive, it's always interesting to see what he comes up with next. This time he rearranges 14 classical melodies in a jazz context. More than half are short tracks, colorful samples from jazz's favorite French Impressionists (Ravel, Faure, and Debussy)to Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" (all four) and pieces by Schumann, Mozart, Paganini, Rimsky-Korsakov "Flight of the Bumblebee," Saint-Saëns, and jazz pianist Claude Bolling, who in the 70s teamed up with legendary flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal to record their own crossover tracks. Although he also respects the basic character of the music, Terrasson is more adventurous. For example, the much-beloved "Pavane" (Ravel) is still serene, but with interludes of communal passion and trio jazz, as fine bassist Sean Smith and drummer Ali Jackson provide subtle, quickly reactive support. "Bolero" is an exciting journey which obliterates all memory of the plodding and repetitious original; it features a happy Latin groove that dances under the melody, then segues seamlessly into funk and Fender Rhodes. If Pahud's improvisations are rather basic, his tone is beautiful and he swings, as does the bass/drum section, after which the whole thing goes Jamaican -- before returning to Latin. It sounds like a mishmosh in print, but it works. So does the beautiful "Apres un Reve," which conjures the countryside of southern France where the CD was recorded, and "Jimbo's Lullaby," which originally described a lumbering elephant, but is meditative and nearly Oriental here. On "Marche Turque," Mozart meets reggae and humor. In fact, there's wit throughout this CD, as well as imagination and top-level playing. Both classical and jazz fans will find much to enjoy. FAURÉ : Piano Quartet No. 1; Piano Trio; Pavane; Pièce; Sicilienne (2013) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Gabriel Fauré’s musical language bridges a gap between the romanticism of the 19th century and the new worlds of music which appeared in the 20th, employing subtle harmonic changes and a gift for melody to combine innovation with an entirely personal idiom. His First Piano Quartet is filled with characteristic French colour and lyricism, and the Piano Trio in D minor is a late work whose musical language is familiar from his songs. Both the Pavane and the popular Sicilienne express nostalgia for earlier times, and the short Pièce has great simplicity and charm.  www.naxos.com

ENRICO CARUSO - The Complete Recordings, 1902-1920 (2004) 12CD BOXED SET / FLAC (tracks), lossless

No opera singer in history is more venerated than Enrico Caruso -- the very name seems to conjure up its own mythic power, and his popularity extends beyond the limits of opera and manages to reach even those who have never heard his voice. Caruso's relationship with recording technology is a boon to posterity; he recorded often and well, and even though more than eight decades have passed since his death at age 48 it is relatively easy to access his legacy, which is captured in all its glory in this 12-disc box set from Naxos, Enrico Caruso: The Complete Recordings.
Enrico Caruso: The Complete Recordings contains everything extant that Caruso recorded from 1902 to 1920. Each disc bears a separate photograph of Caruso, each image appropriate to the contents of that specific disc within the set -- as these were all initially issued individually, each volume is a stand-alone product in itself. The liner notes, by Hugh Griffith, are perceptive, intelligently written, and targeted to each volume. They strike a nice balance between the historical context of the recordings and analysis of their content.
What really gives this set the advantage over others is the quality of Ward Marston's transfers: clear and sharp, with a little of the surface noise included in most cases. Marston tends to focus on making the whole of the recording fully audible, both band and singer, rather than trying to take Caruso's voice and "juice it up" out of context. There are some extras tagged onto the last disc -- a march written by Caruso, an obnoxious song "My Cousin Caruso" sung in bad Italian dialect by "the Denver Nightingale" Billy Murray, and Caruso's first recording, Studenti, udite from Franchetti's Germania in a cleaner copy than that used on the first volume of the set. The years have not brought more Caruso, good or bad, but what we have is more than adequate, and there is no better, more comprehensive, or economical way to enjoy the glories of Caruso's total output than Naxos' Enrico Caruso: The Complete Recordings.  by Uncle Dave Lewis

FAURÉ : Piano Music Complete (2006) 4CD Box-Set / APE (image+.cue), lossless

Between 1973 and 1983, Jean-Philippe Collard recorded the complete piano music of Gabriel Fauré for French EMI. Although not picked up for American distribution by EMI's Angel label, it was eagerly snapped up by American collectors hungry for complete recordings of what is generally agreed to be the finest Romantic piano music written by a French composer. Most were more than satisfied with Collard's soulful performances, although some expressed doubts regarding his technique and his interpretations. Reissued in 2006 by Brilliant, Collard's performances remain as soulful -- his Nocturnes sing and sigh, his Barcarolles slip and glide, his Ballade soars and roars -- but his technique and interpretations are perhaps more doubtful. In difficult passages, Collard has a tendency to drop notes and over pedal in compensation. More questionable are Collard's interpretations. Are the Nocturnes supposed to sound so nervous? Are the Impromptus supposed to sound so wayward? Is the Dolly Suite supposed to sound so arch? While anyone who loves Fauré's piano music will have to hear these discs, they should compare Collard's performances with the great performances of the past by Marguerite Long and Alfred Cortot, pianists whose technique was variable by later standards but whose interpretations were unimpeachable by any standards. Brilliant's minimal remastering retains the clarity and depth of French EMI's stereo originals.by James Leonard

GABRIEL FAURÉ : The Complete Songs, Vol. 1 : Au bord de l'eau (2005) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

The first volume of Hyperion's complete Fauré songs is called "Au bord de l'eau" (by the water's edge) -- a reference to the French master's fondness for aquatic, nautical, and natural subjects in poetry, as well as to the title of one of his most famous songs. Having decided against a purely chronological survey of Fauré's songs, an approach that would have progressed from the lyrical outpourings of the composer's youth to the much thornier works of his later years, pianist Graham Johnson and Hyperion have instead divided the songs into thematic groups -- in the case of this first volume, songs that make poetic or musical reference to nature, water, sailing, and so on. Organizing the songs in this way sheds light on themes that ran throughout the composer's creative life, and happily avoids the academic cheerlessness that often ruins complete editions.
From a musical standpoint this is a good, but not great, collection. All of the singers, from veterans like Felicity Lott to relative newcomers like Christopher Maltman, deliver polished and secure performances, and Graham Johnson accompanies them all with sensitivity, if not always great involvement. But the all-English cast's French is often too sharply articulated to pass for authentic, and there is a generalized lack of atmosphere, of je ne sais quoi. That said, there are certainly some high points. Geraldine McGreevy and Stella Doufexis' "Tarantelle" brings a welcome wit out of Johnson at the keyboard, and shows a playful, almost Offenbach-like, side of Fauré that is often overlooked. And Stephen Varcoe's understated Mirages takes top honors for French style with its even-keeled lyricism and soft, almost caressing approach to phrasing and diction. Johnson's liner notes are some of the most accessible and informative that you'll find in any song collection. by Allen Schrott

GABRIEL FAURÉ : The Complete Songs, Vol. 3 : Chanson d'amour : Love song (2005) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Volume 3 of Hyperion's four-volume set of the complete songs of Gabriel Fauré is dedicated to his love songs -- unsurprisingly, a subject near and dear to the hearts of fin de siècle composers, and one that seems especially effective in Fauré's sweetly perfumed style. His chansons d'amour are tasteful, gently impassioned settings of poems by Romantic and Symbolist writers, the best known being Victor Hugo, Charles Baudelaire, and Paul Verlaine; though others of less renown received music of equal artistry, and Fauré's consistent excellence makes even modest versifiers seem like poets of genius. The performances by sopranos Felicity Lott and Jennifer Smith, tenors John Mark Ainsley and Jean-Paul Fouchécourt, and baritones Christopher Maltman and Stephen Varcoe lend great variety to this installment, and keep the program lively; since its amorous content could easily slide into monotony with only one singer, a mix of interpretations is the right way to go. Their accompanists, Graham Johnson and Ronan O'Hora, also contribute to the highly varied textures and moods of this album, though in rather understated playing that never upstages the singers. Hyperion's sound quality is pleasant overall, though a little variable due to the different engineers, venues, and acoustics. by Blair Sanderson

GABRIEL FAURÉ : The Complete Songs, Vol. 4 : Dans un parfum de roses (2005) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Okay, so, no, the Hyperion French Song edition's four-volume survey of the complete songs of Fauré won't replace EMI's complete edition. But then, how could it? Featuring the ethereal Elly Ameling and the heroic Gérard Souzay along with stalwart accompanist Dalton Baldwin, the set was in its time and remains for all time the gold standard of postwar Fauré singing. That said, yes, even though it won't replace the gold standard, volume four of the complete Fauré on Hyperion has many merits and deserves to be heard by anyone who loves the music. First among its merits is the rich and soulful voice of soprano Jennifer Smith in the opening Le papillion et la fleur and again in the closing La chanson d'Eve. Second are the three brief but lovely appearances by soprano Felicity Lott, especially her achingly beautiful Le parfum impérissable. Third are the sensitive and subdued accompaniments of Graham Johnson, the skillful pianist who found a steady gig recording the collected songs of just about everybody for Hyperion. Less compelling is light-voiced baritone Stephen Varcoe in Nocturne and thin-toned Jean-Paul Fouchécourt in Aubade. Although those who already have the Ameling/Souzay/Baldwin recordings might not be tempted to turn to these recordings as a first choice, they will be gratified and satisfied if and when they do hear it. Hyperion's sound is clear, close, and warm. by James Leonard
