BUDDY BANKS / BOBBY JASPAR - Jazz De Chambre (2000) Jazz In Paris 18 / RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Part of the fun of listening to Universal Music's Jazz in Paris series is digging into their compilations of obscure recordings, such as these two mid-'50s sessions, led by Buddy Banks and Bobby Jaspar. Banks, originally a saxophonist who switched to bass, had arrived in Europe after World War II; he is accompanied by drummer Roy Haynes, pianist Bob Dorough, and guitarist Jimmy Gourley. The leader takes the spotlight in a subtle take of "Yesterdays," though a strange clicking mars an otherwise swinging "I Love You." Banks' group also offers serviceable interpretations of modern pieces like Gerry Mulligan's "Line for Lyons" and Milt Jackson's "Bag's Groove." The partnership of Belgian flutist Bobby Jaspar and American pianist Blossom Dearie was rather brief. Married not long after they met, they recorded just four selections together in 1956 with bassist Benoit Quersin and drummer Christian Garros, then went their separate ways. The best track is the snappy arrangement of "Old Devil Moon." Dearie adds a quick bit of celesta to their abbreviated take of "There Will Never Be Another You." The four standards on this session are enjoyable, though they might have benefited from adding a second reed or brass instrument to provide some variety. by Ken Dryden

LUCKY THOMPSON - Modern Jazz Group (1956-2000) Jazz In Paris 28 / RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Lucky Thompson was very active in the recording studios during his 1956 visit to France; this CD in Verve's attractive Jazz in Paris reissue series features the big toned tenor saxophonist with both a quartet and a tentet. Thompson's lush sound in sensitive interpretations of "The Man I Love" and the less familiar ballad "There's No You" brings Ben Webster to mind. Thompson's original "Tight Squeeze" is an up-tempo jump blues which showcases his harder blowing, more boppish side; while the venerable standard "Gone With the Wind" is a brisk swinger. Pianist Henri Renaud leads the potent rhythm section. The tentet session is less memorable. All of the songs were written by Renaud, and while they are comparable to much of the output of so-called "cool school" of the period, they tend to be a little too conservative. Still, Thompson's playing is at a high label throughout both dates, so bop fans should invest in this enjoyable CD. by Ken Dryden

PIERRE MICHELOT - Round About a Bass (1963-2001) Jazz In Paris 29 / RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Pierre Michelot was one of the very best jazz bassists in Europe, though few fans think of him as a bandleader, composer, or arranger. This reissue of an LP made for Mercury dates from 1963, where Michelot is joined by some of the top players on the continent. In addition to fresh arrangements of standard fare like "Cherokee" and "Bye, Bye Blackbird," the leader penned five compositions, including the tasty blues "Akkilino," which is an extended feature for his bass and Roger Guerin's muted trumpet. "Elephant Green" showcases flutist Raymond Guiot and Pierre Gossez's robust baritone saxophone in a melancholy ballad setting. Like many of Verve's Jazz in Paris CD reissues, this recording is a sleeper that is well worth acquiring, even if its running time is a tad miserly at around 32 minutes. by Ken Dryden

BARNEY WILEN / ALAIN GORAGUER - Jazz & Cinéma Vol. 1 (2000) Jazz In Paris 49 / RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This compilation in Verve's laudable Jazz in Paris reissue series features two separate soundtracks of original music. The first features a dozen works by French saxophonist Barney Wilen, written for Edouard Molinaro's Un Témoin dans la Ville, with a quintet consisting of Kenny Dorham, Duke Jordan, Kenny Clarke, and bassist Paul Rovere. While many of the pieces were only heard as musical fragments in the film, and several of them are little more than a brief chorus or two in recorded form, the music doesn't need visuals to be effective. Best is Wilen's sole appearance on soprano sax, the mellow duo ballad with Jordan of "Mélodie pour les Radio-Taxis." None of the tunes is particularly memorable, though the music is certainly enjoyable. Alain Goraguer's music for Michel Gast's movie J'Irai Cracher sur Vos Tombes sounds very much like something John Lewis might have composed for the Modern Jazz Quartet. The pianist is joined by bassist Pierre Michelot, drummer Christian Garros, vibraphonist Michel Hausser, and trumpeter Roger Guerin, with brief appearances by tenor saxophonist Georges Grenu, flutist Raymond Guiot, and harmonica player Claude Garden. All of these selections are less than two and a half minutes each, so the music never has much of a chance to make an impression. The personnel listings seem incomplete, as an unidentified baritone saxophonist and alto saxophonist are heard on the final track, "Surprise-Partie au Bord de L'eau." by Ken Dryden

LE JAZZ GROUPE DE PARIS - Le Jazz Groupe De Paris Joue Andre Hodeir (1956-2001) Jazz In Paris 70 / RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Joue Andre Hodeir is the second recording by le Jazz Groupe de Paris, a piano-less nonet originally formed by André Hodeir, with the help of Bobby Jaspar, and dedicated to his music and arrangements -- Hodeir, who used to be a proficient violinist, only conducts. By the time this session was recorded Jaspar had already left for the United States and was replaced by Georges Grenu. In addition to six originals, the program is rounded out with tunes by Bud Powell, Duke Jordan, Thelonious Monk, and John Lewis. Hodeir's compositions are not as tuneful and memorable as the covers, but this is irrelevant since his musical concerns deal almost exclusively with textures and colors. In line with the leader's esthetics, the soloists do not indulge into virtuosic runs. Instead, Hodeir's draws from his musicians complex soundscapes rich in tonalities. Overall, Hodeir favors slow and midpaced tempos, which provide a better ground for his intricate voicings. His original ideas are more obviously displayed on "Paradoxe I," which features a pulsating cymbal in the foreground, or "On a Scale," whose theme is not restated at the end. Despite the knowledge his theories require to be fully grasped, Hodeir's music is utterly enjoyable and this album provides a fine introduction to his universe. by Alain Drouot

V.A. - Jazz & Cinéma Vol. 3 (2001) Jazz In Paris 71 / RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The Jazz in Paris: Jazz and Cinema series of Verve CD reissues examines jazz recorded for French film soundtracks in the late '50s and early '60s. This third compilation is the least successful of the first three, as few of the tracks stand on their own merit away from the movies they accompanied. Written for the film Les Loups Dans la Bergerie, the compositions of Serge Gainsbourg might be labeled cool, though they are rarely given time to develop and feature no major soloists in Alan Gouraguer's arrangements. Less successful are Andre Hodeir's somewhat boppish charts for Les Tripe au Soleil, which have extremely distracting scat vocals by Christiane Legrand that frequently seem off-key. The best of the lot is a remake of four songs composed by Freddie Redd for The Connection, which began life as a play. The potent trumpet of Sonny Grey and sassy trombone of Luis Miguel Fuentes constitute the centerpiece of each selection. This session also marked the recording debut of drummer Daniel Humair as a leader, who recruited René Urtreger to write the arrangements. It is these four tracks that make this anthology worth acquiring. by Ken Dryden

ALAIN GORAGUER - Go-Go-Goraguer (1956-2001) Jazz In Paris 74 / RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The Go...Go...Goraguer sessions are a rare opportunity to discover what a potent jazz pianist Alain Goraguer was before he embarked on a new career as an arranger and a composer that would take him away from the realm of jazz. He would have been part of a great generation of French jazz pianists that includes fine stylists such as René Urtreger, Martial Solal, or Georges Arvanitas. The program is comprised of standards, songs from the French repertoire, and two originals. Classically trained, Goraguer's technique is beyond reproach, and his quite marvelous touch can be enjoyed on a wide range of material -- from his tender version of "Darn That Dream" to a percussive reworking of "What Is This Thing Called Love?." Regardless of the tempo, his playing has a sparkling quality that does not fail to draw the listener in. Having assimilated the bebop vocabulary, Goraguer was also quite interested in innovations brought by musicians like Monk, in particular, whose influence can be heard on "You Are Too Beautiful" or the pianist's "Gogo's Goggles." Paul Rovère on bass and Christian Garros on drums are competent and sympathetic players who usually provide a shuffling beat -- and the successfully remastered and balanced recording does justice to their playing. This CD reissue combines an LP and an EP, both recorded in 1956, and is much more than a mere curiosity. by Alain Drouot

JACQUES LOUSSIER TRIO – Play Bach/5 (1965-2000) RM | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The Bach treatments of France's Jacques Loussier Trio have fallen in and out of fashion. There's a certain 1960s-France flavor that initially seemed to date them quickly. But the reissue of this 1965 album, 44 years after the fact, points to their enduring appeal and raises the question of what's contributing to that appeal. One major factor is certainly Loussier's utterly liquid, technically facile piano playing. More important, though, may be that, among the various crossover projects that have explored the classical-jazz relationship in the intervening years, nobody else has quite duplicated the range and flexibility of Loussier's take on the matter. His adaptations of Bach begin with the simple addition of jazz rhythms to the regular chord changes shared by jazz with Baroque music, but he is rarely content with that: the music quickly veers into freer improvisatory treatments. Yet these are not just jazz improvisations that use Bach's melodies as a starting point. Loussier weaves dense webs of Bachian motifs and constructs multisectional compositions that approach the model in different ways. This particular album makes a good place to start for those interested in Loussier, for it offers an appealing variety of ideas. In the fugue section of the Toccata, Adagio, and Fugue for organ, BWV 564 (here simply designated "Toccata"), Loussier seems to avoid a formal fugal texture but lets polyphony seep in at every turn. A movement from the Sonata in E flat major for flute and keyboard, BWV 1031, is inventively turned into a piece of jazz nighttime mood music. Most impressive is the extensive treatment of the "Schübler" Chorale Prelude on "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme," BWV 645, with an architecture not directly drawn from Bach but indissolubly linked to him. The reproduction of a good deal of the original album artwork, nicely rearranged for the CD format, is another plus. James Manheim
