All of the music on this CD was recorded by trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie in Paris during a one-month period in 1952. The first half of the set teams Gillespie with tenor saxophonist Don Byas, who had moved to Europe from the U.S. six years earlier. The sextet alternates swing standards with some boppish originals and Afro-Cuban jazz pieces. The performances are pretty concise, and one wishes that Gillespie and Byas had had opportunities to really stretch out and inspire each other. The final dozen selections mostly feature the trumpeter backed by a string orchestra with arrangements from Jo Boyer or Daniel White. The repertoire is comprised of swing tunes, but Dizzy's melodic statements are still pretty adventurous. Three of the numbers drop the strings and have Gillespie playing with the rhythm section. Although one would not call any of this music essential, it does have its moments of interest and Dizzy Gillespie fans will want to pick it up as a gap filler between more significant sessions. HARRY JAMES AND HIS ORCHESTRA – 1942-1944 | The Chronogical Classics – 1227 (2002) FLAC (tracks), lossless
This is an unusual Harry James reissue in that, after the first four selections (which are from July 31, 1942), the remainder of the disc consists of James' V-discs of 1942-1944. The Musicians Union's recording strike stopped all recording for at least 16 months and, in the case of James' label Columbia, nearly two-and-a-half years. The trumpeter's last studio date of 1942 resulted in the final of three Helen Forrest hits, "I've Heard That Song Before." His wartime band is heard on V-disc versions of such songs as "Two O'Clock Jump"; "Back Beat Boogie"; "Blue Lou"; "Charmaine" (which has particularly inventive writing for the string section); "I'll Walk Alone" (Kitty Kallen's first vocal with the band); and "I'm Beginning to See the Light," the latter cut a month before the commercially released hit version. This formerly rare material is taken from a period when Harry James led the most popular swing band in the world, and it will be of strong interest to swing fans. Scott Yanow

HARRY JAMES AND HIS ORCHESTRA – 1945-1946 | The Chronogical Classics – 1313 (2003) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Classics' gathering of Harry James' material between July of '45 and May of '46 showcases a band on the far side of their peak as one of the finest swing bands in jazz history. The group is still in top-notch form, and provides a glimpse into vocalist Kitty Kallen's finest moments with the band on numbers such as "Wonder of You." Fans of swing will find this an appealing set to twirl along to. Gregory McIntosh

RED NORVO AND HIS ORCHESTRA – 1945-1947 | The Classics Chronological Series – 1386 (2005) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Volume eight in the Classics Red Norvo chronology opens with two extended jams from Timme Rosenkrantz's Town Hall Jazz Concert of June 9, 1945. A wild romp on "Seven Come Eleven" runs for ten-and-a-half minutes while "In a Mellotone" lasts more than a quarter-of-an-hour. This particular Town Hall event was audio-documented by Milt Gabler and the recordings eventually appeared on his Commodore record label. Unlike most of the concerts held at Town Hall during the '40s and organized by staunch traditionalist Eddie Condon, this gig resounded with music of a slightly more modern and bop-informed nature, with Specs Powell, Slam Stewart, Remo Palmieri, Teddy Wilson, and Red Norvo providing steamy support for trumpeter Shorty Rogers, trombonist Eddie Bert, clarinetist Aaron Sachs, and tenor saxophonist Flip Phillips, who cuts loose in ways that anticipate his behavior at JATP concerts a few years later. The inclusion of these two precious live jams makes this installment in the Norvo chronology extra special. Most of the rest of the material was recorded for the Capitol label in Los Angeles between October 13 and December 18, 1947. For the October 13 session the band, billed as "Ten Cats and a Mouse," engaged in a peculiar experiment, as everybody swapped instruments. This meant, for example, that Red Norvo played piano, Paul Weston blew the clarinet, Benny Carter played tenor sax, and Peggy Lee (the "Mouse") played drums! On the following day, the instruments all returned to their rightful owners and Kansas City legend Jesse Price was behind the drum kit. On November 28, 1947, Norvo's Septet included cool guitarist Barney Kessel and young saxophonists Dexter Gordon and Jimmy Giuffre, as well as visionary pianist Dodo Marmarosa. Both "I'll Follow You" and "Bop!" are more modern-sounding than anything Norvo had previously presented to the public. The fascinating overlap between bop and R&B is evident on the other two tracks from this date, issued as by Jesse Price and his Blues Band, with shout blues vocals by Price. For the two ultra-modern sessions from mid-December 1947, Norvo switched back to the drier sound of the xylophone in front of smooth ensembles playing arrangements (suitable for film noir soundtrack purposes) written by Johnny Thompson. Even the old "Twelfth Street Rag," handled here by an ensemble equipped with a pair of French horns, comes across as bracingly futuristic. One expects Art Pepper and Warned Marsh to come in at any moment. This excellent compilation closes with two previously omitted V-Disc jams from November 1944 and February 1945, originally issued under Paul Baron's name but featuring the vibraphone of Red Norvo. arwulf arwulf

BENNY GOODMAN AND HIS ORCHESTRA – 1948-1949 | The Classics Chronological Series – 1425 (2006) FLAC (tracks), lossless
For a man who collaborated with Béla Bartók, the making of modern-sounding bop records in the company of Fats Navarro, Wardell Gray, and Chico O'Farrill was a perfectly logical experiment in form and style. Decades later, however, biased critics and die-hard swing fans were still griping about "Goodman's bop band." With the 2006 release of this volume in the extended Classics Benny Goodman chronology, listeners are able to place those "controversial" recordings in their proper historical context, right alongside Buddy Greco's sweet-to-stupid crooning and various gee-whiz novelty group vocals by a wholesome team identified only as "The Singers." Their slicked back treatment of the pop tune "The Hucklebuck" is highly ironic when encountered amidst various exciting bop tunes, for "Hucklebuck" was the notorious exercise in plagiarism based upon Charlie Parker's "Now's the Time." Parker never received royalties for this very lucrative hit. The real gold in this part of the Goodman retrospective may be found in the tenor saxophone of Wardell Gray (Navarro only appears on the first track) and those exciting Chico O'Farrill arrangements with Latin percussion erupting throughout "Shishkabop." Enclosed is a photo of Gray blowing his horn as Goodman beams in the background, obviously delighted with the younger man's creative approach to the music. arwulf arwulf

CHARLIE VENTURA – 1945-1946 | The Classics Chronological Series – 1044 (1999) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Philadelphia native Charlie Ventura was born Charles Venturo in 1916. Following in his father's footsteps, he worked at first for the Stetson hat company. Inspired by tenor saxophonist Leon "Chu" Berry, he took up the sax on his own and eventually made his first appearance on records as a member of Berry's ensemble. After extensive nocturnal gigging while working at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Venturo sat in with Roy Eldridge and soon began recording with Gene Krupa's orchestra. It was Krupa who first brought Venturo to Los Angeles. This wonderful compilation presents a wealth of precious material recorded between March 1945 and March 1946 in both L.A. and New York. These are the first records that Venturo issued under his own name, and they all used the original spelling. He wasn't presented on records as "Charlie Ventura" until September of 1946. Teamed at first with Howard McGhee and then with Buck Clayton, Venturo cut eight sides for the small-time Sunset and Black & White labels. These were followed by five episodes for tenor and rhythm section recorded in New York for the rapidly rising Savoy label. While Chu Berry was his prime influence, Venturo's progress paralleled that of Coleman Hawkins as swing evolved rapidly into bop. Here Venturo demonstrates his remarkable prowess as both balladeer and front burner. The drumming of Gordon "Specs" Powell enhances and fortifies the two sessions from August of 1945. A loose-limbed live "Jam Session Honoring Charlie Venturo" resulted in extended versions of "The Man I Love" and "Stompin' at the Savoy," and were brought out on the Lamplighter and Crystalette labels by producer Ted Yerxa. The omission of Ventura's famous performance at Town Hall in 1945 -- issued on Commodore and reissued by Atlantic -- is puzzling and somewhat disappointing, but the rest of the material is so rare and excellent as to compensate for the gap. Back with Black & White in March of 1946, Venturo led a sextet including trumpeter Red Rodney and Jimmie Lunceford's star alto saxophonist, Willie Smith. There are several contenders for "best Charlie Ventura compilation," but this one, documenting his first year as leader of his own recording ensembles, rates among the very best. arwulf arwulf

BENNY CARTER - The Music Master (2004) 4CD SET | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Throughout much of the 20th century, Benny Carter was an accomplished composer, arranger, leader, sideman, and multi-instrumentalist. In 2004 the U.K.'s Proper label served his memory well with Proper Box 68 which carefully examines a 22-year segment from his unusually lengthy career. If a reasonably priced 88-track, four-CD set of swing and early modern mainstream jazz dating from 1930-1952 seems like too much of a good thing, maybe you really need to hear more jazz and not less, for here in the land of its birth we still have a lot of catching up to do in order to better comprehend this important part of our cultural heritage. A sensible two-CD equivalent would be Living Era's 51-track compilation When Lights Are Low, which has 31 tracks in common with Proper Box 68 and includes examples of Carter with Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra and McKinney's Cotton Pickers. Proper focuses more closely on bands which operated under Carter's direct leadership or influence. Although Carter is most often pictured holding an alto saxophone, he played a lot of trumpet as well as clarinet, tenor sax, and even a bit of drums. As an altoist he resembled Hilton Jefferson, Willie Smith, Johnny Hodges, and the young Pete Brown. For all his expertise as a reedman, Carter blows plenty of fine trumpet on Music Master.
Most of the first disc is devoted to the early '30s. Carter is heard leading his own bands, sitting in with visiting Englishman Spike Hughes & His Negro Orchestra, and with the Chocolate Dandies, a recurrent all-star swing band with varying personnel. Four different Chocolate Dandies sessions are represented on this collection. The first of these, recorded in December 1930, was essentially a condensed version of the Fletcher Henderson orchestra with Horace Henderson at the piano. The December 1933 Chocolate Dandies were racially mixed, which was a significant accomplishment back then. Carter revived the Dandies in the '40s with powerful improvisers like Roy Eldridge, Coleman Hawkins, Buck Clayton, and Ben Webster. Carter's productive adventures in Europe during the late '30s are well represented on this collection, appearing near the end of the first disc and occupying more than half of the second. Starting in London, the tour takes you through Copenhagen, Laren, Den Haag, and finally Paris, where he recorded "Farewell Blues" and "Blue Light Blues" with an octet that included tenor man Alix Combelle and guitarist Django Reinhardt. For thrilling examples of Carter's handling of the tenor saxophone during his London sessions, you might want to hunt down his 1936-1937 recordings as reissued in chronological sequence by Classics, as well as his alternate takes on Neatwork 2063.
Throughout the '40s, Carter recorded with many of the best jazz musicians on the scene, and Proper provides an excellent overview of his work during this period. The inclusion of two Keynote sessions from 1946 is a real treat, with Carter leading his own quartet and guesting with a small combo led by pianist Arnold Ross. The big surprise on Disc Four is the vocal on "Out of My Way" by drummer Sid Catlett: this may well be the only time he ever used his voice on a recording. Proper's Benny Carter edition finishes with seven examples of Carter as an early modern mainstream jazzman in groups assembled by producer Norman Granz. First comes the historic blowing session with the one-time-only combination of Charlie Parker, Johnny Hodges, Benny Carter, and Ben Webster. The closing tracks feature Carter backed by Oscar Peterson's quartet, with strings added on "Isn't It Romantic?" and "Key Largo." arwulf arwulf

BENNY CARTER - Aspects (1958-1996) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
This CD reissues an enjoyable obscurity. Although originally associated with big bands, the set has what was Benny Carter's only big-band recording as a playing leader during 1947-86. While the song titles are a bit gimmicky, saluting the 12 months of the year (including "June in January," "I'll Remember April," "June Is Busting Out All Over," etc.), the music (which includes four alternate takes) is solid, mainstream big-band swing. The less familiar titles include four Carter originals written for the date, plus Hal Schaefer's "February Fiesta." The leader/altoist solos on every selection, and among the other top West Coast studio players featured are trumpeters Shorty Sherock, Pete Candoli and Joe Gordon, trombonists Frank Rosolino and Herbie Harper, vibraphonist Larry Bunker, pianists Arnold Ross and Gerry Wiggins, and guitarist Barney Kessel. Two overlapping big bands were utilized, and the music alternates between being forceful and lyrical. Scott Yanow

DIZZY GILLESPIE - Cognac Blues (2001) Jazz In Paris 52 / RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Part of Verve's Jazz in Paris series, Jazz in Paris: Cognac Blues features various tracks recorded by trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie during the '50s in France. All of the material included in the series is stellar and makes for excellent listening. The tracks are not necessarily rare, but are often ignored in favor of the more popular late-'40s Gillespie material. Fans and collectors looking for a great compilation of Gillespie's work overseas should appreciate this. by Matt Collar
