BASIE | BENNETT — Count Basie And His Orchestra Swings, Tony Bennett Sings (1959-1990) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The Roulette half of the two Bennett/Basie sessions is a band singer's paradise, with the Basie band caught at a robust and swinging peak and Bennett never sounding happier or looser in front of a microphone. The Count himself, alas, appears on piano only on two numbers ("Life Is a Song" and "Jeepers Creepers"), while Bennett's perennial pianist Ralph Sharon takes over on the remaining ten tracks and does all the charts. Yet Sharon writes idiomatically for the Count's style, whether on frantic rave-ups like "With Plenty of Money and You" and "Strike Up the Band" or relaxed swingers like "Chicago." Though not a jazz singer per se, the flavor of jazz is everywhere in Bennett's voice, which in those days soared like a trumpet. The 1990 CD included an atmospheric unissued Neal Hefti ballad "After Supper," but even this bonus track does little to extend the skimpy playing time (about 31 minutes) of what is still a great, desirable snapshot from American showbiz of the late 1950s. COUNT BASIE Encounters OSCAR PETERSON — Satch and Josh (1974-1998) RM | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Producer Norman Granz occasionally got carried away with the quantity of his recording projects. In 1974 he recorded a full album teaming fellow pianists Count Basie and Oscar Peterson in a rhythm quintet; little did anyone realize that this then-unique matchup would eventually result in five albums. This first one, which finds Basie doubling on organ, is among the best. Peterson's virtuosic style somehow worked very well with Basie's sparse playing and these ten numbers really swing. Scott Yanow

OSCAR PETERSON and COUNT BASIE — Satch and Josh Again! (1978-1998) RM | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Recorded three years after their first full album together, this second encounter between Count Basie and Oscar Peterson on twin pianos (this time with a quartet) is as strong as the original, alternating standards with blues. Both Peterson and Basie have one number apiece on electric piano, making this album historic as well as quite musical. Scott Yanow

COUNT BASIE AND DIZZY GILLESPIE — The Gifted Ones (1979-1993) RM | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Norman Granz got this one backwards. Instead of featuring Dizzy Gillespie with the Count Basie Orchestra, he put Gillespie and Basie together in a quartet which the trumpeter naturally dominates. The music is generally quite rewarding, including an unusual version of "St. James Infirmary," but never reaches the great heights one might have expected. Scott Yanow       Tracklist + Credits :

COUNT BASIE AND HIS ORCHESTRA – 1943-1945 | The Classics Chronological Series – 801 (1995) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This interesting CD mostly reissues the V-Discs of Count Basie's Orchestra, performed during a time when the musicians' union strike kept the Basie band off records. Lester Young is heard back with Basie on five numbers from May 27, 1944. Otherwise, the band was much more stable than most swing bands of the war years, making it to December 1944 when it was able to resume its recordings for the Columbia label. There was not much change in the orchestra's swinging style during this era, as can be heard on such enjoyable pieces as "G.I. Stomp," "Yeah Man!," "Circus in Rhythm," two versions of "Taps Miller," and "Old Manuscript." Scott Yanow  Tracklist + Credits :

COUNT BASIE AND HIS ORCHESTRA – 1946-1947 | The Classics Chronological Series – 988 (1998) FLAC (tracks), lossless

Here's a crash course in the flashy post-WWII big band sound of Count Basie's Orchestra. This was a much different act from the Basie band of 1944-45. The entire presentation had changed considerably in just a couple of years. Arrangers had a lot to do with such rapid transformation, along with creative young players like J.J. Johnson, Paul Gonsalves and Illinois Jacquet. Basie himself was maturing already into that famously glib, tinkling pianist who could and did occasionally play his ass off. A number of stylistic modes are clearly at work during the summer of 1946. Two sentimental pop vocals, one lightweight novelty tune and a solid Jimmy Rushing blues are interspersed with several exciting instrumentals. Buster Harding cooked up a few heavy-handed boogies, Tadd Dameron contributed the stimulating, modern composition "Stay On It," and Harry "Sweets" Edison composed and arranged "Mutton Leg," a sizzling feature for Illinois Jacquet. This would be the saxophonist's last extroverted studio recording with this band, and the eight selections from 1946 were the last of Basie's mid-'40s Columbia sides. Signing up with Victor for the next three years, Basie continued to move in step with rapidly evolving developments in pop, bebop and rhythm and blues. The Victor sides have not been reissued very often, and have proved much more difficult to obtain than Basie's earlier recordings from the Columbia and Decca catalogs. The people in charge of the Classics chronological series are to be commended for making these historical recordings available. The Victor material is markedly varied, revealing an orchestra searching for its next stylistic identity. "Open the Door, Richard" is one of the coolest versions of this silly piece of neo-vaudeville ever recorded, mainly because of Harry "Sweets" Edison's very hip, high-voiced spoken delivery. "One O'Clock Boogie" is recognizable Basie, but two lush ballads, arranged by Hugo Winterhalter, of all people, are atypical for this band. "Futile Frustration," though nominally co-composed by Basie, is a jaggedly futuristic Raymond Scott-styled experiment by Jimmy Mundy. Two live V-Disc jams, each exceeding the four-minute mark, feature Basie and rhythm with a snappy front line of Roy Eldridge and Illinois Jacquet. Art Ford, square peg in a round universe, introduces "Lady Be Good." "Jammin' on a V-Disc," which has a line that sounds uncannily like Sun Ra's "Space is the Place," runs at a brisk clip with wonderful solos from both of the horns. Illinois bites the reed to make his sax squeal and everybody rocks. Buddy Rich is in his element here, as the assignment calls for furious drumming. This segment of the chronology ends with three excellent instrumentals including smart remakes of "St. Louis Boogie" and "Swingin' the Blues." The pianist switches over to Hammond organ in the middle of "Basie's Basement," an authentically low-down blues graced with echoes of Fats Waller's personality. The rest of the fine music recorded by Basie and his men during the month of May 1947 appears at the beginning of the next volume of the complete recordings of Count Basie in chronological order. arwulf arwulf   Tracklist + Credits :

COUNT BASIE AND HIS ORCHESTRA – 1952 | The Classics Chronological Series – 1281 (2003) FLAC (tracks), lossless

This solid entry in the Classics Chronological Series contains all of the titles recorded by Count Basie and his orchestra between January 17 and July 25, 1952, a period during which this band was signed to Norman Granz's Clef record label. Basie, who had been forced to scale his group down to septet and octet dimensions for more than a year beginning in 1950, had begun recording with a powerful new 16-piece unit in April of 1951. Nine months on, this ensemble was well on the way to virtually redefining the art of big-band jazz. Input from arranger/composers Sy Oliver, Buster Harding, and Neal Hefti add a luster to the proceedings that cannot be diminished by the passage of time. Key participants include trumpeters Joe Newman and Charlie Shavers, trombonist Jimmy Wilkins, and reedmen Marshall Royal, Ernie Wilkins, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, and Paul Quinichette, whose Lester Young impersonations were positively uncanny. Small wonder that Pres suffered from an identity crisis on hearing his style replicated so deliberately right there in the reed section of an orchestra led by the same man in whose band he, Lester Young, had developed that style 15 years earlier. Quinichette sounds wonderful. He sounds like Lester Young.  arwulf arwulf   Tracklist :

BENNY GOODMAN AND HIS ORCHESTRA – 1939-1940 | The Classics Chronological Series – 1098 (1999) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Despite competition from Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Count Basie, and Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman largely held on to his popularity during the 1939-1940 period. The personnel was changing in his big band, but it was still a strong outfit with trumpeters Ziggy Elman and Jimmy Maxwell, trombonist Vernon Brown, Jerry Jerome on tenor, pianist Johnny Guarnieri, and singer Helen Forrest being significant voices. Among the better big band selections on this consistently swinging CD are "Zaggin' With Zig," "The Fable of the Rose," "Shake Down the Stars," and "I'm Nobody's Baby"; however, it is the three sextet numbers that take honors. "Till Tom Special," "The Sheik of Araby," and "Poor Butterfly" feature Goodman with guitarist Charlie Christian, Lionel Hampton, and either Count Basie or Guarnieri on piano. All of the Benny Goodman recordings from this era are well worth acquiring by swing fans. Scott Yanow

BENNY GOODMAN AND HIS ORCHESTRA – 1940 | The Classics Chronological Series – 1131 (2000) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

During the time covered by this CD, Benny Goodman was stricken with sciatica and had to break up his big band for a few months. When he came back, his new orchestra only retained a few of the earlier musicians. This disc has the last recordings by his original big band (which he had formed in 1934) and has two different versions of his small group; his new big band did not record until November 13. Fortunately, Benny Goodman was wise enough to retain the services of the great electric guitarist Charlie Christian, who is heard in the earlier sextet with Lionel Hampton and the later septet with trumpeter Cootie Williams, tenor saxophonist Georgie Auld, and guest pianist Count Basie. The combo tracks include "Air Mail Special" and "Boy Meets Goy," "Royal Garden Blues," "As Long As I Live," and the riff-filled "Benny's Bugle." The better big band selections include "Crazy Rhythm" and "Mister Meadowlark" (featuring Helen Forrest). Fred Astaire has a guest vocal (and a bit of tap dancing) on "Who Cares." Scott Yanow

BENNY GOODMAN AND HIS ORCHESTRA – 1941 | The Classics Chronological Series – 1202 (2001) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

All of the master takes from Benny Goodman's recordings from a two-month period in early 1941 are on this CD. Helen Forrest, one of the best big band singers, has 13 vocals, including "The Mem'ry of a Rose," "This Is New," and "Oh! Look at Me Now." Trumpeter Cootie Williams, trombonist Lou McGarity, and tenor saxophonist Georgie Auld have some brief solos with the big band, Teddy Wilson plays with the orchestra (which he did not get a chance to do during the early days), and Eddie Sauter contributes some of the arrangements. Charlie Christian is showcased on "Solo Flight," while "Scarecrow" (from Buster Harding) is memorable. But the best session included is by the Benny Goodman Sextet (Williams, Auld, Christian, bassist Artie Bernstein, and drummer Jo Jones) with Count Basie guesting on piano. "Breakfast Feud," "On the Alamo," "I Found a New Baby," and "Gone With What Draft" are all gems. Recommended. Scott Yanow

BENNIE MOTEN's KANSAS CITY ORCHESTRA – 1929-1930 | The Classics Chronological Series – 578 (1991) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

From 1929-30, the Bennie Moten Orchestra could hold its own with fellow big bands like Fletcher Henderson, Paul Whiteman and McKinney's Cotton Pickers, although it was the least known nationally of the four. The third of four Classics CDs completely reissuing Moten's recordings finds the young Count Basie taking over the piano slot and such stars joining the band as singer Jimmy Rushing and (by 1930) trumpeter Hot Lips Page. With cornetist Ed Lewis, Eddie Durham on trombone and guitar, clarinetist Harlan Leonard and Buster Moten (on accordion) also heard from, this was a mighty orchestra, as displayed on such numbers as "New Goofy Dust Rag," "The Jones Law Blues" and "New Vine Street Blues." The four imported Classics sets are certainly more complete than the two CDs put out domestically by Bluebird. Scott Yanow

BENNIE MOTEN's KANSAS CITY ORCHESTRA – 1930-1932 | The Classics Chronological Series – 591 (1991) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The final of the four "complete" Bennie Moten Classics CDs, which contain all of the orchestra's recordings except for a dozen alternate takes, has the band's final selections from 1930 (including some vocals by Jimmy Rushing) and then all of the music from Moten's classic final session of Dec. 13, 1932. With trumpeter Hot Lips Page, trombonist Dan Minor, Eddie Durham (the main arranger) on trombone and guitar, baritonist Jack Washington, Ben Webster on tenor, bassist Walter Page and pianist Count Basie, the orchestra at times almost sounds like the Count Basie big band of 1937. "Toby," the original version of "Moten Swing," "The Blue Room," "Milenberg Joys," "Lafayette" and "Prince of Wails" are among the many memorable selections. Highly recommended. Scott Yanow
