Belgian guitarist Catherine has had an erratic recording career, bouncing between fusion, rock, and jazz, but his enormous talent has never been in question. This CD probably brings his abilities into clearer focus than previous ones, buoyed by keyboardist Jim Beard, electric bass guitarist Alphonso Johnson, and drummer Rodney Holmes. Catherine wrote all but one of these thirteen cuts, a nice take of the classic ballad "Stardust" with Black on Fender Rhodes. The best tracks are in the front half of the recording. "Merci Afrique" has a groovy beat with ultra-bright chords from Catherine's spare guitar and piano and is a great tune. A chord laden melody on "Sunset Shuffle" is a swing-rock amalgam. Inventive bass/guitar unison on the easy swing of the title track with Wes Montgomery-like chords and a darker ballad, "For Wayne and Joe," are dedicated to Messrs. Shorter & Zawinul, big influences on Catherine in the '70s and through the '90s. As a matter of fact, this rhythm section is Shorter's. There are four sambas; moody, introspective, heavy unison staccato accents inform "Good Morning Bill," while deliberate but breezy dynamics center guitar and piano crisscrossing during "Hello George." A reverential poppish mode sets up "To My Sister," and "Blue Bells" is slow but highly melodic. Four others are pretty tunes. The Rhodes-driven "Chinese Lamp" is Christmasy, "Here and Now" is meditational, and, on acoustic guitar, "Nuances" (not Django Reinhardt's) is a power ballad, while "Simply" is stated sweetly with distinction. Some day Catherine will release the out-and-out jazz recording the world knows he is capable of. This one comes very close. Michael G. Nastos

BILLY COBHAM — Alivemutherforya (1978-2002) RM | Serie Columbia Jazz | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless
Drummer Billy Cobham is heard on this live set heading an all-star quintet also including Tom Scott on tenor, soprano and lyricon, keyboardist Mark Soskin, guitarist Steve Khan and electric bassist Alphonso Johnson. Although the music is mostly funky and uses plenty of electronics (Scott sounds quite faceless on lyricon), there are some strong solos, particularly from Khan and Scott (when he is on tenor). The six group originals are highlighted by "Bahama Mama," "Some Punk Funk" and "On a Magic Carpet Ride." Due to the amount of variety and spontaneity, Alivemutherforya is superior to most of these musicians' individual projects of the era. Scott Yanow

AIRTO MOREIRA - Samba de Flora (1989) 32bits-96Hz / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
An effusively performed minor classic of Brazilian jazz fusion, percussionist Airto Moreira's 1988 album Samba de Flora found him diving into an organic mix of originals and covers alongside equally gifted collaborators including his wife vocalist Flora Purim, Argentine pianist Jorge Dalto, bassist Alphonso Johnson, percussionist Don Alias, Cuban conga player Cachete, and others. The album was originally released on the cult independent Montuno Records label, based out of the Record Mart record store located in the Times Square subway station. Founded by Latin music impresario Al Santiago in 1975, Montuno issued album after album documenting the exuberant music and musicians whom Latin fans -- and specifically Latin dance fans -- were digging in NYC in the '70s and '80s. The centerpiece of the album is the propulsive minor-key title track, which features Moreira on both percussion and vocals, leading his band through an absolutely infectious dancefloor banger. Following the songs' minute-long percussion intro, Moreira and his band erupt into a dynamic call-and-response verse that conjures images of stylish dancers coupled in a sweaty samba frenzy. Equally captivating is the group's buoyant reading of Hugo Fattoruso and Ruben Rada's "Dedos" featuring Purim's earthy, smiling vocals. Elsewhere, they offer a similarly sparkling rendition of George Duke's "Yanah Amina" and plunge into the electric guitar-tinged Tropicalia of "Latin Woman." Moreira also reveals a gift for elegiac balladry, showcasing his burnished baritone vocals on the yearning, spare piano numbers "Mulambo" and "La Puerta." As with many of the LPs released by Montuno, Samba de Flora is a warmly produced album with a vibrant live aesthetic that steams with the energy and passion of a concert given in the heat of a New York City summer. by Matt Collar

WEATHER REPORT - Mysterious Traveller (1974-1997) RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Weather Report's fourth recording finds Wayne Shorter (on soprano and tenor) taking a lesser role as Joe Zawinul begins to really dominate the group's sound. Most selections also include bassist Alphonso Johnson and drummer Ishmael Wilburn although the personnel shifts from track to track. "Nubian Sundance" adds several vocalists while "Blackthorn Rose" is a Shorter-Zawinul duet. Overall the music is pretty stimulating and sometimes adventurous; high-quality fusion from 1974. by Scott Yanow

WEATHER REPORT - Tale Spinnin' (1975-2002) RM / FLAC (image+.cue), lossless
Weather Report's ever-changing lineup shifts again, with the somewhat heavier funk-oriented Leon "Ndugu" Chancler dropping into the drummer's chair and Alyrio Lima taking over the percussion table. As a result, Tale Spinnin' has a weightier feel than Mysterious Traveller, while continuing the latter's explorations in Latin-spiced electric jazz/funk. Zawinul's pioneering interest in what we now call world music is more in evidence with the African percussion, wordless vocals, and sandy sound effects of "Badia," and his synthesizer sophistication is growing along with the available technology. Wayne Shorter's work on soprano sax is more animated than on the previous two albums and Alphonso Johnson puts his melodic bass more to the fore. While not quite as inventive as its two predecessors, this remains an absorbing extension of WR's mid-'70s direction. by Richard S. Ginell

WEATHER REPORT - Black Market (1976-2007) RM / FLAC (image+.cue), lossless
The shifts in Weather Report's personnel come fast and furious now, with Narada Michael Walden and Chester Thompson as the drummers, Alex Acuna and Don Alias at the percussion table, and Alphonso Johnson giving way to the mighty, martyred Jaco Pastorius. It is interesting to hear Pastorius expanding the bass role only incrementally over what the more funk-oriented Johnson was doing at this early point -- that is, until "Barbary Coast," where suddenly Jaco leaps athletically forward into the spotlight. Joe Zawinul or just Zawinul, as he preferred to be billed -- contributed all of side one's compositions, mostly Third World-flavored workouts except for "Cannon Ball," a touching tribute to his ex-boss Cannonball Adderley (who had died the year before). Shorter, Pastorius, and Johnson split the remainder of the tracks, with Shorter now set in a long-limbed compositional mode for electric bands that would serve him into the 1990s. While it goes without saying that most Weather Report albums are transition albums, this diverse record is even more transient than most, paving the way for WR's most popular period while retaining the old sense of adventure. by Richard S. JOHN MCLAUGHLIN - Electric Guitarist (1979-1990) RM / APE (image+.cue), lossless
Since John McLaughlin's first two post-Shakti albums -- Electric Guitarist and Electric Dreams -- featured the word "electric" in their titles, it seems that the guitarist wanted to emphasize his more plugged-in side to those who might not have followed along on three previous releases featuring his acoustic world music band. He also thumbed through his impressive phone book to call in some of the cream of the 1977 crop of jazz fusionists to help him out on Electric Guitarist, a true return to form. Ex-Mahavishnu members Jerry Goodman and Billy Cobham assist in kicking things off just like in the old days with "New York on My Mind," a tune that could have been an outtake from his earlier Mahavishnu Orchestra work. Also along for the ride are Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, David Sanborn, Carlos Santana, Jack Bruce, and four legendary drummers including Cobham, Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette, and Narada Michael Walden. Unfortunately, the credits don't specify who plays on which track (well-written liner notes would help there), but anyone familiar with the distinctive styles of these artists can easily pick them out. McLaughlin is in fine form throughout, especially when playing clean, staccato, bent notes on the ballad "Every Tear from Every Eye." The majority of the selections stay in a more subtle but amped-up groove as McLaughlin shifts from dreamy to a faster, more straight-ahead tempo on the seven-minute "Do You Hear the Voices that You Left Behind?" A duet with Billy Cobham on "Phenomenon: Compulsion" provides the set's most frantic fireworks as both musicians air out their chops on a breathless, galloping piece with some of the guitarist's most furious picking. by Hal Horowitz
