MARTHA ARGERICH - Martha Argerich Edition : Concertos (2011) 4CD / FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Martha Argerich Edition: Concertos is one of several box sets issued in 2011 in honor of her 70th birthday. These four discs gather ten complete concertos recorded between 1997 and 2009 for EMI. As an artist as well-known for her loyalty to particular repertoire and particular musicians, most of these works have been recorded by Argerich multiple times. Prokofiev's Concerto No. 3, one of the first concertos she ever recorded, is here in a 1997 performance with conductor Charles Dutoit, one of her best collaborators. The two recorded both Chopin concertos the following year, also included here. Others of Argerich's most frequent collaborators are found on Beethoven's Triple Concerto: Renaud Capuçon, Mischa Maisky, and Alexandre Rabinovitch. The recordings of fellow pianist Mikhail Pletnev's Fantasia elvetica and of Falla's Noches en los jardines de España come from her Lugano Festival, an annual event founded in 2002 where Argerich gathers friends -- her familiar collaborators and new, promising, young musicians -- for music-making. The collection unfortunately does not include Ravel's Concerto in G, the other concerto typically noted as one of Argerich's best interpretations. Yet, it should very well satisfy those who want to get to know Argerich's work in the concerto repertoire as a mature musician at the height of her talent. by Patsy Morita

BÉLA BARTÓK : Mikrokosmos 6; Fifteen Hungarian Peasant Songs; Suite, Op. 14; Out of Doors; Three Burlesques (2016) FLAC (tracks), lossless

While Cédric Tiberghien's recordings consist mostly of Romantic piano music, with a strong representation of Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, and Brahms, he has taken an avid interest in the modernist music of Béla Bartók, which he has been recording for Hyperion since 2014. This CD, the first of three albums devoted to the solo keyboard works, offers a broad sampling of compositions dating from 1908 to 1939, showing the diversity of styles, subjects, and techniques that preoccupied Bartók, not only in his piano pieces but also in his chamber and orchestral music. One of the most evocative pieces is "The night's music" (track eight) from Out of doors, an example of the eerie nocturnal effects that Bartók exploited in his other instrumental works, such as the String Quartet No. 5 and the Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta. Also notable is "A bit drunk" (track 26) from Three Burlesques, which is perhaps better known in its orchestrated version in Bartók's Hungarian Sketches. While the rest of the album is seemingly more technical and abstract, many of the pieces are infused with Hungarian and Bulgarian folk music and reveal the strong influence Bartók's musicological research had on his compositions. Tiberghien's playing is clean and energetic, and he has mastered the complexities of Bartók's rhythms and textures, which put this music in the virtuoso's repertoire. Hyperion's sound is clear but dry, which works quite well with Bartók's sharply accented music. by Blair Sanderson

Béla Bartók: The Miraculous Mandarin (Version for Piano Duet) / Arnold Schoenberg: Kammersymphonie No. 1 Op. 9 (Version for Piano Duet) [Kocsis-Hauser] Harmonia Mundi 1903021 / 1991 / FLAC

This poorly listed item is the harmonia mundi release, recorded in 1989 and first released with a purple background cover in 1991. What brilliance it contains! The Miraculous Mandarin is rarely played in this form for piano duet, but it sounds fantastically vivid. The story is maximally unpleasant, but somehow in ballet this seems to matter less than in opera, the stylisation actually allows for a wider range of expression that doesn't alienate the audience. To hear it on the piano makes it seem further still from the action, although you do feel a narrative drive. The notes give the plot in Bartok's own succinct summary. Much of the music is savage - as untrammelled as anything Bartok wrote - but it is superbly exciting. The Kammersinfonie Op. 9 by Schoenberg transposes the fierceness to the sense of musical development, based on a series of rising fourths and being in a constant state of flux and transformation. It falls somewhere between Strauss and Bartok - a profusion of notes, wonderfully sprung between intellectual thought and Romantic emotion. Zoltan Kocsis and Adrienne Hauser make a totally inspired duo, and the recording is admirably clear and immediate. The cover painting by Alexei von Jawlensky prepares one for the expressionistic onslaught of the Bartok and the hallucinogenic emotions of both works.
