If you love the music of Edward Elgar, England's most characteristically English composer, you probably already have heard many of the recordings in EMI's 30-disc set of nearly all his music. Certainly most Elgar fans will have heard John Barbirolli's deeply moving accounts of the two symphonies and The Dream of Gerontius, Janet Baker's sweeping reading of Sea Pictures, and Jacqueline du Pré's soaring performance of the Cello Concerto. Those who have heard Boult's delicate The Sanguine Fan and incidental music from Grania and Diarmid, or Neville Marriner's tender Carissima and Salut d'amour are probably rarer, and those who have heard the elegiac chamber music performed by the Music Group of London and the heroic piano music played by John Ogdon are much rarer still. For those who love Elgar, the less frequently recorded works are probably the most eagerly sought after, and with uniformly excellent performances and superb sound, plus an amazingly low price, this set will be irresistible. EDWARD ELGAR : Symphony Nº.2 • Cello Concerto (Beatrice Harrison · London Symphony Orchestra · Edward Elgar) (2007) Serie Great Conductors | APE (image + .cue), lossless
Elgar’s second recording of his Symphony No. 2, made only eighteen months after the previous, acoustic set had been released, coincided with the innovation of electrical technology and the opportunity to mark the composer’s seventieth birthday on 2nd June 1927. Both the Symphony and the equally famous recording of the Cello Concerto offer unique insights from being composer-conducted. The tumultuous energy of the opening of the symphony’s first movement, the refusal to indulge the second movement and Elgar’s natural command of the art of transition, so crucial in this of all his works, add significantly to the poignancy and emotional thrust of the work as a whole. Taken at a quicker pace than most modern recordings, the Cello Concerto is a far cry from the sentimental resignation frequently associated with it in recent times. NAXOS

Edward Elgar (1857-1934)
The most authentic recordings are made when the composers themselves lead the baton. And so the classical audience can be lucky that Edward Elgar, one of the greatest masters of English music history, was able to record his own works for the record. For the first time ever, Elgar's electric recordings from the years 1925 to 1934, the year of his death, come together in a box as one of the most interesting sonic legacies in history. Many know the English late Romanticist almost only as the creator of the popular "Pomp and Circumstances" marches that were made for the festivities of the British royal family, or as a composer of the "Enigma Variations". But his concerts are also among the pillars of the repertoire: the violin concerto was recorded by Elgar in 1932 with the 16-year-old Yehudi Menuhin, the cello concerto in 1928 with the dedicatee Beatrice Harrison. The nine CDs show that Elgar enthusiastically took advantage of the revolutionary recording technique of his day: Much of his work is included on the nine CDs - including his two symphonies, a wealth of suites and stage music, his famous adaptation of Bach's Fantasie und Fuge c minor "and the" string serenade ". A highlight are excerpts from 1927 from his oratorio "The Dream of Gerontius" with Margaret Balfour, Steuart. web
