MICHEL CAMILO — Rhapsody in Blue (2006) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Jazz pianist Michel Camilo, working with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra under Ernest Martinez Izquierdo, attempts here to make something new out of George Gershwin's heavily recorded Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto in F -- broadly speaking, he tries to tie these jazz-classical fusions more closely to their jazz roots. Given the fluency with which Gershwin moved between the worlds of classical music, jazz, and pop, the experiment would seem a worthwhile and interesting one, but the recording, at least for those with the usual ways of performing Gershwin in their ears, is likely to come off as neither fish nor fowl. Gershwin's genre-bending status is eloquently attested to by the multiple extant versions of the Rhapsody in Blue, which is heard here in its familiar arrangement by Ferde Grofé. Camilo, however, bases his solo part on Gershwin's original version, a freer, jazzier thing with a language reminiscent in some ways of Gershwin's own Song-Book improvisations. Camilo is an adept, exciting player with plenty of experience in classical music, but the effect of this combination is perhaps to plunk Gershwin's living room down in the middle of a symphonic stage. Or perhaps to give an idea of what Art Tatum might have sounded like playing the Rhapsody in Blue. The recording seems to blur some strands that Gershwin kept clear as he wove them together. The big, soupy lyricism that is such an essential component of the Rhapsody is partly lost. Camilo plays it straighter in the concerto, but this work too ends up sounding more like modern jazz than it should. Gershwin's music has always served as a stimulus for new creativity. And a bit of experiment is necessary to realize his aims fully. Perhaps Camilo's approach will emerge as the standard in time, but for now it's a detour down a Gershwin byway. James Manheim

ALISON BALSOM · TOM POSTER — Légende : Works for Trumpet and Piano (2016) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Alison Balsom has been successful since the early 2000s with a standard diet of Baroque trumpet works and the usual Classical-period concertos. In the mid-2010s she turned toward more contemporary repertory with a French conservatory flavor. The results on the trumpet-and-piano Légende, named for the effusive Enescu piece (track five), are impressive; Balsom deepens her art with a coherent program even as she plays mostly music that could be characterized as light. Sample one of the movements of the opening Sonatine of the mightily underrated Jean Françaix, whose understated style, not so much humorous as subtle and elegant, poses challenges for a trumpet confined mostly to its middle register. Balsom's bright, perfectly controlled lines and close ensemble with pianist Tom Poster pass all the tests. After that you get a mix of other neoclassic pieces, the heavier Hindemith Trumpet Sonata in the middle, and popular songs, small chunks all hanging together that stimulate the listener even without awareness of same. GEORGE GERSHWIN — The Complete Porgy And Bess ★ ft. Mel Tormé · Frances Faye · Duke Ellington & Russ Garcia and His Orchestra (1956-1996) RM | 2CD MONO | Serie Mastersonic – 11 | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

The Bethlehem label didn't make it out of the '50s before folding, and one of the reasons why is the ambitious yet misguided George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, a three-LP box set that represents a complete recording of the Gershwin classic (with narration and sound effects). Bethlehem certainly had the talent to pull it off -- appearing on the label, and this production, are Mel Tormé, Duke Ellington & His Orchestra, Johnny Hartman, Bob Dorough, Betty Roche, Frances Faye, and minor period stars including vocalist Frank Rosolino, bandleader Stan Levey, and arranger Russ Garcia. And long-playing versions of theatrical productions were huge in the mid-'50s (a few sold millions of copies). The most popular of these, however, were simply easy-to-digest highlights LPs that never attempted to present the complete production. This version is a gargantuan two hours long, difficult to sit through even if every performance was stellar (and, unfortunately, that's far from the case). The recording makes a virtue of being hip, primarily through the narration of Al "Jazzbo" Collins, a radio DJ who may have been hip for the times but whose counterfeit excitement and perfect diction make the proceedings sound like a period newsreel. ("Watch out, Porgy, here comes that mean Sportin' Life!") Tormé, as the most popular vocalist on the label, was a shoe-in for the role of Porgy, despite Johnny Hartman's clear superiority, and Frances Faye received the role of Bess despite Betty Roche's ability to handle the role much better. Those mistakes are compounded by Russ Garcia's period arrangements (the Ellington group makes only one appearance) and some decidedly subpar performances from Frank Rosolino early in the program. Still, it has to be admitted that a highlights compilation of this record would sparkle very brightly, driven by Mel Tormé's swinging "I've Got Plenty o' Nuttin'" with a super-enthused backing chorus, George Kirby's "It Ain't Necessarily So," and Betty Roche's reprise of "Summertime" during the second half. CLARK TERRY with JEFF LINDBERG & THE CHICAGO JAZZ ORCHESTRA - George Gershwin's Porgy & Bess (2004) FLAC (tracks), lossless

Gil Evans' historic arrangement of excerpts from George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess folk opera became one of the most important records ever released by trumpeter Miles Davis. But no one else revisited this score until it was transcribed by Jeff Lindberg, (along with Charles Harrison III) for this release featuring guest Clark Terry (who celebrated his 83rd birthday between the recording sessions) with the Chicago Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Lindberg. Not only was Terry an early influence on the young Davis, but he is a far more expressive trumpeter who doubles on flügelhorn, while also possessing a fatter tone, greater range, and more personality on his instruments, though this CD was not intended to eclipse the earlier achievement of Davis. Terry's flügelhorn beautifully projects the emotion of Porgy in the soulful "Bess, You Is My Woman Now," while capturing the pain of Bess in the plaintive "My Man's Gone Now." Terry's touch of humor is displayed in "Fisherman, Strawberry and Devil Crab" and the saucy "It Ain't Necessarily So." He switches to muted trumpet for the lightly swinging "Summertime." Terry's vocals, always a favorite of his fans, are heard in the brief rendition of "Here Come de Honey Man," complete with the usual jocular asides typical when Terry sings. The CD is wrapped with the boisterous celebration "There's a Boat Dat's Leavin' Soon for New York." Throughout the sessions, the orchestra provides superb accompaniment for its special guest, while Art Hoyle joins Terry as a second flügelhorn soloist for the one original by Evans, "Gone." This is a very fitting salute to the earlier album by Miles Davis and Gil Evans which easily exceeds the expectations of typical re-creations of historic sessions. Ken Dryden

CHRIS CONNOR - Chris Connor Sings the George Gershwin Almanac of Song (1989) 2CD / FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Most of this highly recommended set is taken from a series of 1957 sessions in which singer Chris Connor exclusively interprets songs of George Gershwin. To fill out the CDs, additional Gershwin cuts from other, otherwise unrelated dates by the vocalist have been added. Connor's cool delivery gives many of the largely familiar songs new life. She is assisted by such fine musicians as trumpeter Joe Newman, tenorman Al Cohn, flutist Herbie Mann, vibraphonist Milt Jackson and pianist Ralph Sharon, who add tasteful and concise solos. Many of the selections were quite rare before this well-conceived and appealing reissue was put together. by Scott Yanow

GEORGE GERSHWIN : The Complete Gershwin Songbooks (1995) 3xCD BOX-SET | FLAC (tracks), lossless

The Complete Gershwin Songbooks collects three discs also released separately: 'S Wonderful, 'S Marvelous, and 'S Paradise. The first two discs include the greatest vocalists Verve had to offer, including Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Anita O'Day, Shirley Horn, Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Bing Crosby, Joe Williams, Fred Astaire, and even Antonio Carlos Jobim. Obviously, the songs are all classics and the versions presented are quite legendary themselves. The third disc in the set includes instrumental versions of Gershwin standards (by Bill Evans, Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz, Clifford Brown, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson) that focus on the composer's stunning gift of melody and harmonic interplay -- just as the vocalists' versions highlight his lyrical prowess. Not all the versions are definitive, but The Complete Gershwin Songbooks includes many treats for fans of classic traditional pop. John Bush
