MORTON FELDMAN : String Quartet No. 1 · Structures · Three Pieces (FLUX Quartet) 2CD-SET (2014) Feldman Edition – 12 Series | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Volume 12 in Mode's Feldman Edition features the FLUX Quartet in performances of three of Morton Feldman's exploratory yet contemplative works for string quartet. The two-CD package offers the imposing String Quartet No. 1 (at an hour and a half, it is divided between the two discs), the brief Structures, and the Three Pieces for String Quartet, a work of only slightly greater duration than Structures. Feldman's processes are quiet different in each work, with the String Quartet No. 1 offering the most elaborate changes of textures and sonorities in a sustained meditation that is quiet, deliberately paced, and almost static in its alternations of chords and silences. The short, pointillistic gestures in Structures seem superficially to resemble the sparse activity of the string quartet, though it is much more fragmentary and airy in feeling. The Three Pieces, composed soon after Structures, more closely resemble it in its aphoristic style, and both works seem quite close in spirit, if not technique, to the music of Webern. Mode's recording is quite clear and close-up, so even the softest pitches can be heard, though the proximity makes the scratchiness of the bowing a little too apparent. Blair Sanderson

MORTON FELDMAN : String Quartet Nº. 2 (FLUX Quartet) 5CD-SET (2002) Feldman Edition – 6 Series | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This is a masterpiece of chamber music, just over 6 hours long and an amazing experience, highly recommended!

The quartet is in one continous single movement. For ease of navigation and reference, there have been included arbitrary track markers on each CD. For the most part, this has been done in five-page score increments; with exceptions due to the limitations of the CD length.

This complete work lasts 6 hours, 7 minutes and 7 seconds. There is also a DVD version of the complete 5 disc set released under the same catalog number in which one could listen to the complete work uninterrupted.

IANNIS XENAKIS : Works for Piano (Aki Takahashi) (1999) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Known for drawing unusual sonorities from conventional instruments, Xenakis strangely left the piano's potential for novel sounds unexplored. In these works, Xenakis stays on the keyboard without so much as a plucked string or any use of gadgetry to alter the instrument's sound. Although that might make these pieces appear less radical, even "safe," Xenakis exploits every other option available. Evryali is an energetically rhythmic piece that bursts into a chaotic roar of crashing chords, traversing the piano's range and achieving maximum volume. Dikhthas is also heavily dependent on loud, percussive playing, though the violin's glissandi and pitch-bending provide the microtones that are integral to Xenakis' sound and add a welcome timbral contrast. Herma, constantly shifting in mood with wildly variable gestures, is regrettably like many other avant-garde solo piano pieces. A kind of mini-concerto, Palimpsest is the most characteristic work on the disc, full of the sonic mayhem and ritualistic patterns for which Xenakis is best known. Mists darts everywhere, as if actively pursuing ideas only to find that they dissipate when grasped. A.r., the briefest piece, is a rapid toccata extrapolated from a fragment by Ravel, though the overpowering result is unlike anything by that composer. by Blair Sanderson
