MORPHEUS — Rabenteuer (1976-1998) Two Version | APE + FLAC (image+.tracks+.cue), lossless

For the first time in this series this is progressive jazz rock, doing without any vocals but featuring an alto saxophone and occasionally a transverse flute. When the precursors of Morpheus, the band Opossum, wanted to tie their members down to free jazz, half of the crew refused to obey, left the band and founded Morpheus in early 1975. Their only LP, "Rabenteuer", was released in an edition of 500 copies and is by now an expensive collectors’ item. For the CD, which was taken from the master tapes, the 20-minute "Morpheus jam" has been dug out as a bonus track. Particularly outstanding are the spacey sounds in the first quarter of "Abflug", so that this track was also selected for the CD on hand. The mishap that the LP is a bit too slow and thus a semitone too low has been put right on this CD. GOD

In 1976, Morpheus from the area around Warburg in eastern Westphalia released their only LP "Rabenteuer" with a circulation of 500 copies without the help of a record company. Particularly remarkable is the cover artwork. In 1998, Garden of Delights published the LP again on CD, adding the 20-minute bonus track "Morpheus jam". After 26 years, the musicians came together again - except for drummer Alfred Franke, who lives too far away - to record "For a second". The music is still characterised by the same relaxed but vivid jazz-rock as in "Rabenteuer", a bit in the mood of Gong or early Kraan. This might not be to everyone’s taste, but the musicians around guitar teacher Gerold Adler are certainly masters of their craft. They might still be seen live, for example at the well-known festival at Burg Herzberg on Friday, 19 July 2002. GOD

MORPHEUS — Restless Dreams (2017) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Morpheus from the Warburg and Kassel area played instrumental jazz-rock, also called fusion. They released their only LP ”Rabenteuer”, which is meanwhile very expensive, in 1976. They re-united again later, and in 2002 they performed at the well-known Herzberg festival, almost with the original line-up. Their very relaxed CD, ”For a second” (Garden of Delights CD 068), stylistically not unlike ”Rabenteuer”, appeared in the very same year. The album at hand is the third work of a similar type. It was recorded in 2016 with the original line-up, except for the drummer, and released at the end of 2017. As always, Morpheus wrote all of the pieces themselves. Two other Morpheus LPs, however pretty brass dominated, are only available as downloads, namely ”Life takes its toll”, and “Life takes another toll.” GOD.
