2002 proves to be a watershed year for Zorn, with this being his fifth film score in three months. Here, a taste of Ennio Morricone, Astor Piazzola, French musette and Nino Rota make up what is perhaps his greatest film score to date. At times bizarre, haunting, exhilarating and powerful, the lush sonorities of this dynamic group will surprise you as much as it did Zorn himself. A romantic new lyricism. A remarkable new direction. Unexpected, inevitable and absolutely essential. TZADIK

For Oren Rudavsky’s new romantic comedy, Zorn has put together a new quartet with a fresh new sound. Drawing upon the modern tango of Piazzolla with a touch of minimalism, this dynamic quartet of violin, accordion, vibes and bass is modern instrumental music at its creative best. At times upbeat and humorous, at times dark and moody, the music combines a soaring lyricism with interlocking counterpoint and complex rhythmic tapestries. Featuring guitar genius Marc Ribot in a supportive role on several tracks, this is one of Zorn’s finest scores. A remarkable listening experience from start to finish. TZADIK

JOHN ZORN — FilmWorks XX : Sholem Aleichem (2008) Archival Series – TZ 7369 | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless
This twentieth volume of John Zorn’s exciting FilmWorks series features the fabulous accordionist Rob Burger and harpist Carol Emanuel accompanied by the world acclaimed Masada String Trio performing music for a documentary on the 19th century Jewish writer Sholem Aleichem. Known primarily for the Tevye stories that inspired Fiddler on the Roof, Aleichem wrote tales in Russian, Hebrew and Yiddish that have a dark subtext reminiscent of Kafka and Poe. Avoiding overt klezmer references, Zorn’s score both breaks with and draws upon tradition, dramatizing the writer’s life and work with lyricism, orchestral color and a keen sense of irony and black humor. JOHN ZORN - Filmworks XXIII : El General (2009) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Eleven cues recorded for a striking documentary focusing on the life of controversial Mexican dictator Plutarco Elias Calles who was called everything from a nunburner to the father of modern Mexico. Beautiful and dramatic, the music is scored for guitar, marimba, accordion/piano and bass and subtly draws upon Mexican, Spanish, minimalist and soundtrack traditions. Zorn’s fifth film score in as many months is a pure delight. Moody and exotic music for a creative and revealing film dealing with truth and the complexity of history! TZADIK

Including tributes to artists as diverse as Vince Guaraldi, Clint Eastwood, David Lynch, Mike Patton and Harry Smith, the music is some of the most beautiful and soothing Zorn has ever written. Touching on the jazz/pop/funk trios of Vince Guaraldi and Ramsey Lewis, the music is scored for a remarkable piano trio of Rob Burger (Rufus Wainwright, Marianne Faithfull, Laurie Anderson), Greg Cohen (Ornette Coleman, Masada, Burt Bacharach) and Ben Perowsky (Uri Caine, Steve Bernstein, John Lurie). Continuing in the mystical tradition of In Search of the Miraculous, The Goddess is a stunning collection of Odes in celebration of Women in Myth, Magick and Ritual throughout the Ages. JOHN ZORN : Filmworks XXV (City Of Slaughter, Schmatta, Beyond The Infinite) (2013) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
The first FilmWorks CD in almost three years (and perhaps the very last in the series) features three radically different musics for solo piano. Commissioned to create music for video installations in Moscow’s Museum of Jewish History, Zorn has responded with a poignant Jewish-tinged score performed here by the virtuosic Israeli pianist Omri Mor. Also included is Rob Burger’s beautiful solo piano performance of Zorn’s landmark composition Beyond the Infinite (from The Goddess) and four rare film cues improvised by Zorn himself for Marc Levin’s documentary Schmatta. An intimate and varied collection of music for solo piano. TZADIK
