ALICE BABS - Alice and Wonderband (1959-1993) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

A popular singer when she was still a young teenager, Alice Babs had a long and varied career. She made her recording debut in 1939 at the age of 15 and, although her yodeling made her initially popular and the novelty "Swing It, Mr. Teacher" was her first hit, Babs even at the start had a highly appealing voice and a lightly swinging style. She mostly recorded in jazz and swing-oriented settings throughout the years of World War II. Babs remained active throughout the 1950s and '60s in Europe, singing everything from jazz (recording with Duke Ellington in 1963 and performing the classic "Heaven" at his second spiritual concert) and pop to a bit of classical music. By the late '70s, Alice Babs had become less active, but into the mid-'90s she occasionally performed on special occasions. Her important first set with Duke Ellington, Swing It!, does a fine job of summing up her first 15 years on records. Babs suffered from Alzheimer's in her final years, and she died on February 11, 2014 of complications from the disease. She was 90 years old.  by Scott Yanow

ALICE BABS & DUKE ELLINGTON - Serenade to Sweden (1966-2016) RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Legendary jazz pianist and bandleader Duke Ellington paired with virtuoso Swedish vocalist Alice Babs for this superb, and somewhat rare, 1963 session Serenade to Sweden. A star on the European jazz scene since the '30s, Babs was blessed with a pristine, highly resonant set of vocal chops that combined the insouciant romanticism of cool-school singers like June Christy with the opera-ready gymnastics of Ella Fitzgerald. Ellington had long been a fan and so when their paths crossed on tour in 1963, he set up a recording session in Paris. Joining them was a well-curated rhythm section of European musicians including bassist Gilbert Rovere and drummer Christian Garros. While technically a small group date, these tracks do evince a symphonic big-band sound with Ellington's unique addition of a four-member French horn section. The result is a set of lush-sounding productions with Ellington framing Babs' angelic vocals in his singularly urbane, swinging fashion. Adding to the symphonic air are Babs' distinctive, wordless vocals, a style in which she splits the difference between opera prima donna and scat singer. It's an approach she takes on many of these cuts including a sparkling, midtempo reading of Ellington's classic "Satin Doll" in which she interprets the melody with improvisational flair. It's a style closer to a horn instrumentalist than your average jazz singer and brings to mind the work Ellington achieved with longtime collaborators like saxophonist Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster. Elsewhere, she takes a more traditional approach, displaying her crisp enunciation and deft phrasing on tracks like "The Boy in My Dreams," "I Didn't Know About You," and "I'm Beginning to See the Light." Babs also contributes several of her own highly engaging originals with the supple and moody ballad "Strange Visitor" and the buoyant swinger "Babsie." by Matt Collar

ALICE BABS - Serenading Duke Ellington (1975-1994) Mp3

Well, it's Alice Babs, so, as you would expect, the vocals are crisp and stunning. The earlier selections on this album are largely staple, well-known and loved classic Big Band Era vocals, and the latter selections are from Duke Ellington's sacred music.
All wonderful, of course. But this album is not, and does not try to be, all things to all people. The genre is narrow, as outlined above.
Also--if you buy this album thinking it's going to be Alice Babs and Duke Ellington together, that's not what this is. This is Alice Babs, with Swedish band leader Nils Lindberg, doing a posthumous tribute to Duke Ellington.
If you like classic pieces like "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" or "Lady In Blue," and if you like Duke Ellington's upbeat sacred pieces, like "Freedom," you will love this album.
But if you're looking for a broader selection of Alice Babs vocals, which may include scat, folk, and even some rock and roll, You may want to try "Alice Babs and the Swe-danes" for startlingly athletic, fun scat, and most of all, "Music With a Jazz Flavour," which contains a much more varied and interesting range of musical genres. by J. M. Kahn

ALICE BABS / NILS LINDBERG - Don't Be Blue (2001) Mp3

Back in 1939, Alice Babs as a 15-year-old became Sweden's most popular swing/jazz singer. Sixty-two years later, she was semi-retired but still in excellent voice for this CD. Babs' voice is still quite steady and recognizable throughout this swinging set. Joined by pianist/arranger Nils Lindberg's Third Saxes Galore (an octet with five saxophonists), Babs is in fine form on such songs as "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," "Portrait of Django," "Takin' a Chance on Love," "I Could Write a Book," and "Thank You for Everything" (a vocalized version of Billy Strayhorn's "Lotus Blossom"). This CD is a surprise success, and an excellent later statement from a legendary European singer. by Scott Yanow
