JOHN McLAUGHLIN | PACO DE LUCÍA | LARRY CORYELL : Meeting of the Spirits (1981) VIDEO (ISO)
In 1979 and 1980 three world renowned guitarists, recognised as the finest exponents of their individual styles, John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell and Paco De Lucia formed a guitar super-trio and toured Europe. The spell-binding quality of the music that the collaboration created as na ensemble and the dazzling audience reaction to the performances has never been surpassed and has rightfully passed into jazz folklore.

CHICO HAMILTON Introducing LARRY CORYELL — The Dealer (1967) Two Version (1990, MCA Records – MCAD-39137) + (1999, RM | Serie Impulse! Master Sessions) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Drummer Chico Hamilton introduced many top young players during his years as a bandleader, but few probably realize that Larry Coryell made his recording debut with Chico a year before joining Gary Burton's quartet. The Dealer marks Coryell's initial appearance on record, and at times he sounded oddly like Chuck Berry (especially on "The Dealer"). Also heard on this set are altoist Arnie Lawrence, bassist Richard Davis, organist Ernie Hayes (on two numbers), and, on his spirited boogaloo "For Mods Only," Archie Shepp making a rare appearance on piano. Most of the performances still sound surprisingly fresh, especially the explorative "A Trip," making this an underrated but worthy release. Scott Yanow

LARRY CORYELL | PHILIP CATHERINE — Twin House + Five Splendid Bonus Tracks (1977) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless
The first of two fine guitar duet recordings with Phillip Catherine. Of the two, Catherine's sound is more rooted in the tradition of Django Reinhardt and tends to be more introspective. Coryell is his usual incorrigible self; however, Catherine's presence seemed to inspire more experimentation and intelligent playing on Coryell's part. As expected, this session will appeal primarily to guitarists -- and for good reason, as both players exploit their chops -- but it should be noted that the compositions here are quite memorable. Whether soloing over one riff ("Mortgage on Your Soul"), playing the blues ("Twin House"), or showing off ("Airpower"), this is an excellent collaboration and one of Coryell's most ambitious performances. CORYELL | CATHERINE — Splendid (1978-2007) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
The companion to Twin House proves to be just as good as the first. This session is a bit more experimental than the first and includes the always reliable Joachim Kühn on piano ("Dues Xango"). Like their first effort, it is not just their remarkable technique that makes this a worthy effort, but also the energetic compositions. Splendid is just as good, if not better, than Twin House, hence, both are recommended. Robert Taylor

The two guitar icons Larry Coryell and Philipp Catherine share a long history and, despite their different musical backgrounds on both sides of the Atlantic, a close musical kinship. Recorded on January 27, 2017, as part of the "Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic" series, "The Last Call" is the final recording of Larry Coryell, who passed away four weeks later on February 19, 2017. It serves as an echo of a very special relationship between two highly accomplished guitarists, filled with creative compatibility, enthusiasm, and deep mutual understanding. ACT

LARRY CORYELL — Fallen Angel (1993) Two Version (1993, Essential Jazz – ESJCD 237) + (1993, CTI Records – MA 70 01 236) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
On Fallen Angel, Larry Coryell teams up with arranger Don Sebesky to produce a wide-ranging album full of sampled sounds and programmed tracks in an attempt to mix the old CTI sound of the '70s with the production techniques and rhythms of the '90s. "Inner City Blues" kicks things off with great promise, as Coryell jams over a pre-programmed rhythm track with background vocalists. On "(Angel on Sunset) Bumpin' on Sunset," he improvises along with a sampled Wes Montgomery, then turns Erroll Garner's classic "Misty" into a mid-tempo reggae jaunt through which he and pianist Mulgrew Miller travel lightly. The CTI connection is brought to the forefront with a remake of Deodato's "2001" hit called "Thus Spoke Z," on which the famous theme is implied but never stated. Other highlights include a funky, angular tribute called "Monk's Corner," Sebesky's attractive "I Remember Bill" and the solo "Westerly Wind." There are also two pleasant smooth jazz vocal pieces at the front of the album, the beautiful ballad, "Fallen," a duet between vocalists Klyde Jones and Jeanie Bryson, and the funky made-for-radio "Never Never," featuring saxophonist Richard Elliot and a vocal from Ms. Jones.
Fallen Angel was obviously an attempt to find Larry Coryell a place on the smooth jazz playlist, a task it didn't really accomplish. While it is not likely to appease those who bemoan the guitarist's failure to live up to his initial promise, it can be enjoyed if taken on its own terms. Jim Newsom

LARRY CORYELL — Barefoot Boy (1971-2000) WV (image+.cue), lossless
Produced by Bob Thiele and recorded at Electric Lady studios with engineer Eddie Kramer, Barefoot Boy is one of Larry Coryell's finest recordings as a leader. "Gypsy Queen" was recorded prior to bassist Mervin Bronson's arrival at the studio, and features the percussion section locking into a groove over which Coryell lays down a riff and Steve Marcus cuts loose with a fiery soprano sax solo. When it's his turn to solo on this opening number, Coryell turns up the heat, sounding like a cross between Jimi Hendrix and Sonny Sharrock. (Coryell played with Sharrock on Herbie Mann's Memphis Underground.) "The Great Escape" finds Coryell cooking over a bass and percussion groove, with Marcus on tenor sax. "Call to the Higher Consciousness" is a side-long 20-minute jam in which all the players take a ride, with Marcus once again cooking on the soprano sax. Roy Haynes is superb throughout, working in tandem with the percussionists to keep the music moving. This recording is a noteworthy example of the possibilities inherent in the early days of fusion, blending the electrifying energy of rock with the improvisational excitement of jazz. Jim Newsom

LARRY CORYELL | ALPHONSE MOUZON — Back Together Again (1977-2002) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
After going their separate ways upon the breakup of the Eleventh House,
guitarist Larry Coryell, and drummer Alphonse Mouzon teamed up again for
what turned out to be a disappointing reunion. This despite the added
presence of guitarist Philip Catherine. The same high energy fusion that
made each player so popular is on display here, but so is Mouzon's
infatuation with disco. "Beneath the Earth," "Transvested Express," and
"High Love" contain some impressive playing, but the disco/funk of "Get
on Up (We Gonna Boogie)" and "Back Together Again" make for a dated and
uneven recording. Robert Taylor

LARRY CORYELL — Offering (1972-2001) APE (image+.cue), lossless
Recorded in 1972, guitarist Larry Coryell's Offering has often been
overlooked because it was the album that was released just before the
debut of his legendary fusion band the Eleventh House. It's too bad,
too, since Coryell's playing here is so inspired and free of the
intellectual trappings of some of his later work. The band on Offering
is a crack jazz-rock outfit made up of drummer Harry Wilkinson, bassist
Melvyn Bronson, soprano saxophonist Steve Marcus, and electric pianist
Mike Mandel (also a founding member of the Eleventh House). The vibe on
this set is akin to the rugged jazz-rock forging of Soft Machine
beginning on Fourth. And while it's tempting to lump this set in with
the rest of the fused-out fare of the time, Offering is a distinctly --
and consciously -- more melodic record than those issued by Coryell's
contemporaries at the time. Compositions such as "Foreplay," with its
loping soprano and keyboard lines, stand apart from most of the Miles
Davis-inspired crowd (Hancock, Corea, et. al), and "Ruminations" with
its knotty, striated bop lines, comes on strong from the middle of three
entwining harmonic figures to reach out and create a melodic framer
from the pathos; Coryell's solo, which is equal parts Jimi Hendrix and
Sonny Sharrock, is a wonderfully scorching and elusive sprite. Beginning
with "Scotland I," which closes out side one, the jams get a bit more
abstract and a bit more involved with the primacy of improvisation
without losing their lyrical sensibilities. Offering is, in its own way,
every bit as strong as the Eleventh House's debut and deserves to be
considered hand in hand with it.

LARRY CORYELL / BADI ASSAD / JOHN ABERCROMBIE - Three Guitars (2005) 24bits-96hz / FLAC
It's rare for three guitarists of this caliber to be assembled for a recording date. John Abercrombie claimed that he hadn't touched his acoustic guitar for three years prior to receiving an invitation to make this recording, though he was obviously ready when the tape rolled. Larry Coryell has made a number of acoustic recordings prior to this disc. Badi Assad's three previous CDs for Chesky have all merited high praise.
Assad contributed five compositions to the session, though the stunning opener, "Seu Jorge e Dona Ica," is hard to beat. She initially accompanies her fellow guitarists on a percussive instrument called a kalimba, which sounds like it originates from Africa. This six-minute work has several distinctive sections, including a bit of her mouth percussion. Her "After the Rain" showcases the intricate interplay between the three guitarists. The moody, march-like "Metamorphosis" also proves compelling, while her switch to copper flute with an interspersing vocal transforms the piece into borderline avant-garde.
Assad's body percussion introduces Abercrombie's challenging "Descending Grace," a piece full of surprising twists. His "Ralph's Piano Waltz" is every bit as difficult, but the players seem to tackle it effortlessly.
Coryell also brought several of his pieces to the sessions. "New Lute Prelude" was inspired by the late Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida, it serves as a brief introduction to the much more laid-back "New Lute Interlude." He also composed two duets to play with Assad. The wild "No Flight Tonight" features her vocals and incredible mouth and body percussion as the sole accompaniment for Coryell. They also walk a musical tightrope together in his "Exercise in Fourths" without any slips. Highly recommended. by Ken Dryden

Herbie Mann has always been open to new trends in his music. For this 1969 studio session, he and three other top soloists (vibraphonist Roy Ayers and guitarists Larry Coryell and Sonny Sharrock) went down to Memphis and combined their talents with a topnotch local rhythm section. LARRY CORYELL - Spaces (1974) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
This album features the pioneer fusion guitarist Larry Coryell with quite an all-star group. Two selections match Coryell with fellow guitarist John McLaughlin, bassist Miroslav Vitous (doubling on cello) and drummer Billy Cobham, all important fusion players at the time. "Rene's Theme" is a guitar duet with McLaughlin, while "Gloria's Steps" (a Scott LaFaro composition) has Coryell, Vitous and Cobham jamming as a trio. Chick Corea sits in on electric keyboard for "Chris," and the 20-second closer ("New Year's Day in Los Angeles -- 1968") finds Coryell playing alone. Overall, the music has its energetic moments, but also contains some lyricism often lacking in fusion of the mid-'70s. In addition, all of the musicians already had their own original voices, making Spaces a stimulating album worth searching for. by Scott Yanow

THE ELEVENTH HOUSE ft. LARRY CORYELL - Level One (1975-2012) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
This was the follow-up to the legendary Introducing the Eleventh House recording. While it never achieved the classic status of its predecessor, it is an excellent follow-up that captures the band at their creative and technical peak. From the whimsical "Diedra" to the intense "Nyctophobia," Coryell leads his group with an understated refrain. He has always been at his best when acting as an equal within a group's space rather than as the centerpiece. His one indulgence here is the pretty, acoustic guitar solo "Eyes of Love." Of particular interest on this recording is the ferocious drumming of Alponse Mouzon, who displays a style of speed and power that rivals that of Billy Cobham. This is a forgotten gem from the fusion era. by Robert Taylor
