EMBRYO ft. JIMMY JACKSON - Steig Aus (1972-1998) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Steig Aus marks a turning point for Embryo. Recorded in 1971-1972, during three separate sessions that also gave birth to Rocksession, the album captures the group actively looking for the ethnic fusion that will soon become its main m.o. for the better part of the decade. It also signals the beginning of the group's distancing from the record industry -- both albums were rejected by their major label, which led to a transaction with the forward-looking small label Brain. Steig Aus features extremely inspired jazz-rock jams, which makes it a lot less friendly than their 1974 hit record, a lot jazzier too, but still a breathtaking journey into Krautrock-meets-American free jazz-meets-North African percussion. The first session yielded the side-long "Call," a loosely structured suite, and "Dreaming Girls," a Miles Davis-like ballad. Both tracks feature drummer Christian Burchard, bassist Jörg Evers, violinist Edgar Hoffmann, U.S. organist Jimmy Jackson, and American jazz keyboardist Mal Waldron. The latter, who had previously played with Eric Dolphy and Max Roach, among other luminaries, was called in as a guest. "Radio Marrakesch/Orient Express," which ended up opening the album, was recorded a while later, when the group reconvened in the studio, minus Hoffmann and Evers (the latter being replaced by Dave King). The track is already opening a window on Middle Eastern influences, with extra ethnic touches (particularly in the percussion department) added a few months later, when the group came back from a trip to North Africa. Steig Aus is a pretty unique cross between German psychedelic rock and American electric jazz. It is probably not the best place to start exploring Embryo's discography, but it deserves special attention nonetheless. François Couture

EMBRYO | CHARLIE MARIANO | KARNATAKA COLLEGE OF PERCUSSION - Life (1980-2001) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Christian Burchard's world music fusion band Embryo has long been a running project of nearly inconceivable depth and breadth. This 1979 live album brings together recordings from an Asian and Indian tour featuring the Embryo sextet with saxophonist Edgar Hofmann, guitarist Jay Zier, bassist Uwe Mullrich, Friedemann Josch on flutes, Michael Wehemeyer on harmonium, and Burchard on marimbas, along with special guest and Embryo alumnus Charlie Mariano on soprano saxophone. What made this tour special was the addition of the Karnataka College of Percussion, a 12-piece Indian percussion ensemble, to the proceedings led by T.A.S. Mani. The result is nothing less than the total synthesis of Embryo's otherworldly sound, crashing, loping, and improvising around set rhythmic and harmonic patters, augmented by the sophistication of this brilliant percussion ensemble who never, ever, overplays. There are four pieces here, the most satisfying of which is the opener, "Cello, Cello" -- and that could be because it is just such a surprise, as everything here rocks! The level of improvisation here is so intimate, so symbiotic as to be literally almost scary that this kind of communication can take place between musicians -- many of whom have never played together before. Literally, these four selections will astonish you at the very least, and perhaps even take your breath away.

EMBRYO - Invisible Documents (1999) 2CD | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Now this one is gone. Drummer and percussion master Christian Burchard's Embryo, undergoing continual personnel changes since its inception, is caught live here in 1974. Charlie Mariano had already departed and was replaced by Edgar Hofmann, but his cohort, guitarist Roman Bunka, remains. The band is rounded out as a quartet by bassist Norbert Domling. This is the smallest Embryo manifestation on record, and it is one of the most adventurous and powerful, as well. This gig features four selections over two CDs, the shortest of which is just over nine minutes, and the longest almost 40 minutes. While they are listed as "compositions," these pieces are far more like structured improvisations. Burchard has less control over the proceedings here -- though he does play drum solos that last too long -- and they benefit as a result. Here saxophones, funk, African rhythms, and folk melodies collide in a mix of jazz-rock fusion's electricity and free-form out jamming. The individual selections don't matter so much, but the gig as a whole does. In particular, the sax playing by Bunka, and the violin work by Hofmann (who is a fine soprano saxophone player as well) are more than remarkable, they are astonishing in how they propel this music to a point where all ideas of time, space, and categorization blue and melt into the ether of intensity. Highly recommended.

EMBRYO - La Blama Sparozzi (1982-1999) 2CD | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This sprawling double album is the last Embryo title to feature the great guitarist Roman Bunka. Here, as on many of the band's other recordings, the basis sextet led by Christian Burchard is augmented by dozens of other musicians to varying effect. For starters, Embryo's live recordings are always their best. That is testified to here, as well, since the album was recorded in studios all over Europe, and features a live performance from Munich. It's the sprawl that testifies simultaneously to this album's greatest strength and weakness. While Embryo's musical restlessness counts for great improvised music, particularly in concert settings, the band's studio offerings sometimes lack focus, and that is certainly the case here. There are few long pieces on these two CDs, with 22 tracks in all. Taken as a whole, it would be unfair to say that these are Embryo's "pop" recordings; it is not inaccurate to say that they are consciously more accessible than on any of their other outings. This band has never aspired to relevance in terms of pop culture, before or after these sessions. The vocal tracks here fall flat and are uninspiring, while the music itself is brilliant and often visionary. This is a mixed bag to be sure, but a far from uninteresting one.
