TAMBA TRIO - Tamba Trio (1975) RM-2001 / Mp3

Recorded and released in the mid-'70s, this album finds the Tamba Trio taking the heart of their 1960s sound -- centered around a piano trio-styled groove with three-part harmony -- and combining it with '70s-style effects. The production style is very mellow and sweet with sonic treatments such as subtly shaded phase shifters and flangers that add a filmy, gauzy tinge to the arrangements. This is interesting in the sense that the charts -- written by Luiz Enca -- include other instruments played by notable guests that seem to reflect the sound of a piano trio in a mirror-like way, giving the entire set a gorgeously rounded, dreamy sound. Prime examples are in the seamless flow of tracks such as "3 Horas da Manha," "Visgo de Jaca," "Beira Mar," "Chorinho No 1," "Jogo Da Vida," "Sanguessuga," and "Beijo Partido" out of and into one another. Some of the guests on this album include Helio Delmiro, Ivan Lins, Toninho Horta, Joao Bosco, and Danilo Caymmi, who add depth, dimension, and plenty of vibe to an already lush set.

Notas do CD

GILSON PERANZZETTA (1985-2019) 38 Albums / Mp3

One of the most requested contemporary arrangers and pianists of MPB, Gilson Peranzzetta has had classical training since he was a child, also being heavily influenced by jazz and Brazilian instrumental music. As a composer, he has had his songs recorded by Djavan, Edu Lobo, Leny Andrade, Sarah Vaughan, George Benson, Dianne Schurr, Quincy Jones, Toots Thielemans, Shirley Horn, and other artists. He has been touring extensively through the U.S., Europe, and Japan. His classical compositions include the suites "Miragem" (for piano and orchestra) and "Metamorfose" (for piano and string quartet). In the '60s, Peranzzetta was a member of the group Samba Jazz, also playing with Taiguara. He toured Europe with the group Central do Brasil, and became Ivan Lins' arranger and pianist for several years. His longtime affinity for guitarist Sebastião Tapajós yielded the most interesting album in duo with him, Afinidades. by Alvaro Neder

GUINGA - Suíte Leopoldina (2000) Mp3

Comparable to New York's Penn Station or Philadelphia's 30th Street Station, Leopoldina Station is a major train station in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Just as a New Yorker would venture to Penn Station to take a train to the suburbs of Long Island or Northern New Jersey, Leopoldina Station is where a carioca would catch a train to Rio's suburbs. By calling this CD Suite Leopoldina, Brazilian guitarist Guinga is celebrating his Rio background. All of the tunes that Guinga wrote or co-wrote for this album, recorded in late 1998 and early 1999, have a strong Rio orientation. Whether he is playing samba or choro, whether he is embracing instrumental Brazilian jazz or jazz-influenced Brazilian pop, the guitarist is consistently Rio-minded on Suite Leopoldina. And it's important to emphasize the Rio connection because carioca music is distinctive; Guinga might admire the Brazilian pop and jazz sounds coming out of Salvador or São Paulo, but this ultra-melodic CD is distinctly Rio. That is true of the album's instrumentals as well as the tracks that feature vocalists, who include Alceu Valenca, Ed Motta, and the influential Ivan Lins. Guinga's love of jazz is strong; he features harmonica player Toots Thielemans on two instrumentals ("Constance" and "Dos Anjos") and pays tribute to Charles Mingus on "Mingus Samba" (which features vocalist Lenine). Excellent from start to finish, Suite Leopoldina is enthusiastically recommended to anyone who treasures the Rio school of Brazilian jazz and pop. by Alex Henderson
