V.A. - The Rough Guide To Brazil : Rio De Janeiro (2005) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Cutting down the usual mass of music contained in any given Brazilian compilation, and following the more regional focus of the Bahia Rough Guide, this album covers the more urban music of Brazil -- the samba, bossa nova, carioco, and so on. Some electronic samba opens the album, followed quickly by a rendition of a classic Gilberto Gil piece. Fusions of samba with electronica, bossa nova with funk, and MPB with soul and jazz make themselves heard here. The classic compositions of Jobim, Gil, Powell, and others also find their way in simultaneously. Some of the most interesting stuff here is the least standard for the area. Ed Motta sounds like an old Michael Jackson dance record, Beth Carvalho enhances an old piece with notions of "Over the Rainbow." The sounds aren't as contemporary as one might expect given the massive life in Rio currently, but there are some interesting pieces here that make a decent cross-stylistic set. by Adam Greenberg

EDÚ LÔBO - Missa Breve (1973-1995) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Strength and weakness of Edu Lobo, the level of complexity of his compositions and his arrangements which can give the impression of a music a bit intellectual touch far from the purified canons of Samba and Bossa Nova. Missa Breve (1973) is part of an extremely interesting MPB / Jazz Fusion lineage symbolized by the superb title "Porto do Sol" which commutes between Jazz and Samba. The first two songs on the album, "Vento Bravo" and "Viola Fora De Moda" are also very successful. With Missa Breve, Edu Lobo proves once again that he is a great composer and performer of high quality. "Zanga, Zangada" is a nice Bossa Nova tune punctuated by Paulo Moura's saxophone. Note the presence in the staff of the Caymmi brothers, Dori and Danilo. The second part of the album is a little less interesting with "bizarre" mystical tunes like "Kyrie" with the Quarteto Em Cy, "Libera Nós" e "Oremus". Missa Breve is a good quality album, a bit uneven nevertheless, but which confirms the immense talent of Edu Lobo by D. Deret

This is the CD reissue of Luiz Melodia's first album, from 1973. He got his chance upon having Gal Costa include "Pérola Negra" on her 1972 Gal A Todo Vapor and Maria Bethânia, "Estácio, Holly Estácio," on her 1972 Drama - Anjo Exterminado. This is Melodia at his best. The album opens with the samba "Estácio, Eu E Você," accompanied by the excellent Regional Do Canhoto. Pure Brazilian grooves can also be found in the all-time classic "Estácio, Holly Estácio" and in the northeastern forró "Forró de Janeiro." He was already into a fusion of Brazilian sambas (he was raised in Estácio, the most traditional samba hill in Rio) with contemporary American rhythms, but at that time there was a general concern for musicality, so in this album the American grooves are interpreted acoustically, with occasional brass arrangements, and no boring, noisy drum machines -- a category that includes "Vale Quanto Pesa," "Prá Aquietar" (with some fuzzed-out guitars), "Abundantemente Morte" (a blues), the immortal classic "Pérola Negra," "Magrelinha" (another hit), "Farrapo Humano" (one more of his all-time hits), and "Objeto H." His lyrics, in general, focus on urban themes with philosophical stoicism. by Alvaro Neder

TUTTY MORENO - Forças d'Alma (Forces of the Soul) 2000 / Mp3

Many point to Europe as the land jazz emigrated to, the region where it found widespread acceptance and popularity after marginalization in America. Especially for specific career paths, this is so. However, in Brazil the art of jazz flourishes, bearing fruits of unparalleled creativity. Brazilian drummer Tutty Moreno exemplifies the sophisticated, advanced face of jazz in that country. On his album Forces d'Alma (Forces of the Soul) he participates in a piano trio drawing on Sao Paulo's best talent. Reed player Nailor "Proveta" Azevedo is part of the Grammy-nominated Banda Matiquiera. Bassist Rodolfo Stroeter also provides rhythmic support in fusion project Pau Brasil. Pianist Andre Mehmari is an exceptional keyboard master at the age of 21. Forces d'Alma combines the elements of the jazz soul: emotion, melody, theme improvisation, and the beauty of the appropriately unexpected. by Tom Schulte

LADSTON DO NASCIMENTO - A Voz Do Coração (Voice of the Heart) 2000 / Mp3

Nascimento is a powerful and expressive vocalist on the Brazilian popular music scene. Like Sinatra he comes across as a popular vocalist with a touch of jazz interpretation in his delivery. On A Voz de Coracao (Voice of the Heart) you hear this master singer, a leading voice in the MPB (Brazilian popular music) genre. Malandro continues to maintain high quality and a broad mind in documenting the best of Brazilian samba, bossa nova, MPB, and other genres that have "at least a touch of jazz." by Tom Schulte

GILSON PERANZZETTA (1985-2019) 38 Albums / Mp3

One of the most requested contemporary arrangers and pianists of MPB, Gilson Peranzzetta has had classical training since he was a child, also being heavily influenced by jazz and Brazilian instrumental music. As a composer, he has had his songs recorded by Djavan, Edu Lobo, Leny Andrade, Sarah Vaughan, George Benson, Dianne Schurr, Quincy Jones, Toots Thielemans, Shirley Horn, and other artists. He has been touring extensively through the U.S., Europe, and Japan. His classical compositions include the suites "Miragem" (for piano and orchestra) and "Metamorfose" (for piano and string quartet). In the '60s, Peranzzetta was a member of the group Samba Jazz, also playing with Taiguara. He toured Europe with the group Central do Brasil, and became Ivan Lins' arranger and pianist for several years. His longtime affinity for guitarist Sebastião Tapajós yielded the most interesting album in duo with him, Afinidades. by Alvaro Neder

VENTO EM MADEIRA - Brasiliana (2013) Mp3

... GUINGA & ALDIR BLANC - Simples e Absurdo (1991) Mp3

Guinga is one of the best composers discovered in the late 20th century in Brazil, in spite of his some decades in the business. His music is deeply Brazilian and he never resorts to clichés or commercial tricks. On the contrary, his angular melodies and uncanny harmonic progressions, deeply influenced by modern erudite music, over sambas, choros, and canções, are challenging both for performers and audiences. This is his very first solo album and has all lyrics by Aldir Blanc -- as always, excellent urban chronicles in poetry. On this album, Guinga's own violão (which excels both in harmonizing and improvising) is joined by such talents as Chico Buarque, Cláudio Nucci, Leila Pinheiro, Paulinho Malaguti, Ivan Lins, Zé Renato, Leny Andrade, Be Happy, and others. by Alvaro Neder

GUINGA - Delírio Carioca (1993) Mp3

Guinga is a wonderful composer who has to survive as a dentist in Brazil because of lack of interest of the recording industry in his music, a sincere declaration of love to Brazilian culture not ashamed of using erudite music achievements. Since 1967 (in the II FIC) having one feet in the music scenery, only in 1991 recorded his first solo album, Simples e absurdo. This is his second solo effort, and he counted here with special guests Djavan, Boca Livre and Leila Pinheiro in it. Guinga's music is a complex creation, where intricate harmonies serve as unstable support for unusual, hard to sing melodies. The instrumental side is his great concern, and orchestral treatments predominate here. The lyrics, he puts the responsibility for them in the hands of some of the most capable Carioca writers: Aldir Blanc, all songs, with exception of "Passarinhadeira" (with Paulo César Pinheiro). Guinga has a crush for profound, doleful melodies. More rhythmic songs are "Par ou ímpar," "Catavento e Girassol," the frevo "Henriquieto" (displaying his virtuosity at the violão), the choro "Choro pro Zé," and the baiões "Nítido e obscuro" and "Baião de Lacan." Guinga is one of the few popular composers/musicians who really expand the Brazilian musical tradition to reach the recording market, which dabbles with disposable trends almost all the time. by Alvaro Neder

GUINGA - Cheio de Dedos (1996) Mp3

This is the third CD of Carioca dentist Guinga (Carlos Althier de Souza, 46) in his belated discography, which was awarded with three Sharp prizes. Intended to be a cultural chronicle of Rio de Janeiro, it has the genre choro as a glue for all the whole. Respecting the tradition and modernizing it at the same time, it brings a inventively crafted harmony together with angular melody lines directly descended from classical achievements of the 20th century. The sophisticated arrangements never compromise, offering a real obstacle for the average listener, harassed by easy listening these days. Paying tribute to distinguished musicians (who had always made the choro an important part of their lives), Jacob do Bandolim, Rafael Rabelo, and Villa-Lobos, from the 15 recorded tracks only two are sung: "Ária de Opereta," interpreted by funk singer Ed Motta in an expressive and heartfelt rendition, and "Impressionados," a choro that makes reference to the impressionist movement, delivered by Chico Buarque. The overall result is at the same time perfectionism and spontaneity: Guinga doesn't edit his songs after written. "Me Gusta A Lagosta" enriches the musical landscape with an Afro-Cuban rendition delivered by pianist Chano Dominguez, string section Diapason, and percussionist Eladio Amat. Modern Brazilian popular music at it's best. by Alvaro Neder
