An interesting set of inside/outside music with a bit more energy than the more stereotypical ECM set, this set of five originals is performed by pianist Steve Kuhn (who was really developing his own original sound around this time), Steve Slagle (heard on alto, soprano and flute), bassist Harvie Swartz, and drummer Bob Moses. This is a fine release that was soon overshadowed by Kuhn's collaborations with singer Sheila Jordan. Scott Yanow

STEVE KUHN — Life's Backward Glances : Solo and Quartet (2008) 3CD BOX-SET | Serie Old & New Masters Edition | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
This collection brings together three much sought-after recordings by Steve Kuhn: the solo piano album “Ecstasy” (recorded 1974), and two quartet albums. “Motility” (1977) features the band of the same name with saxophonist Steve Slagle in the front line, while “Playground” (1979) is the album that introduced the Steve Kuhn-Sheila Jordan Quartet. Singer Jordan is of course one of the great jazz vocalists, and this was an inspired teaming. Kuhn himself is a superlative pianist of vast gifts; each of these recordings illuminates another aspect of his work. Of these three discs only “Ecstasy” was previously available on compact disc, and then only in Japan. “Motility” and “Playground” here receive their first CD releases. ECM

STEVE KUHN QUARTET — Last Year's Waltz (1982) Vinyl, LP | 24-48Hz | FLAC (tracks), lossless
For a time, singer Sheila Jordan was a regular member of pianist Steve Kuhn's quartet, a group also including bassist Harvie Swartz and drummer Bob Moses. This live set finds the band performing five Kuhn originals, one apiece by Swartz and Steve Swallow, plus "I Remember You," "Confirmation," and a brief medley. Although Jordan functions as a member of the band, her highly appealing singing is the main reason to acquire this memorable and well-rounded disc. Scott Yanow

STEVE KUHN — Mostly Ballads (1986) FLAC (tracks), lossless
For a change of pace, adventurous pianist Steve Kuhn performed a dozen standards (mostly at slower tempos) on this New World release. Half of the selections are duets with bassist Harvie Swartz, while the other songs are unaccompanied piano solos. In addition to such notable tunes as "Body and Soul," "Danny Boy," "'Round Midnight," and "Lover Man," Kuhn cooks a bit on Sonny Rollins' "Airegin." An excellent outing. Scott Yanow

ART FARMER | LEE KONITZ - Art Farmer, Lee Konitz With Joe Carter Quartet & Trio (1993) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
This CD gives prime billing to Art Farmer and Lee Konitz, who play on separate sessions, but the leader is actually guitarist Joe Carter. Farmer, bassist Harvie Swartz, and drummer Akira Tana join Carter on the longer of the two dates. The guitarist is a capable player who doesn't hog the spotlight or overextend himself. He wrote two originals including the easygoing "Feathery" in which his soft Jim Hall-like accompaniment backs Farmer's brief but melodic flügelhorn solo before gradually working his way in to back Swartz, as well; there's also "Sad Eyes," which Carter dedicates to Lester Young, featuring Farmer's mournful muted horn and the guitarist's understated solo. A snappy take of Dave Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way" and a warm rendition of John Lewis' waltzing "Skating in Central Park" are highlights of the longer session. Alto saxophonist Lee Konitz is listed as being present on the last two tracks but is not audible on the guitar/bass duo of the piece credited to Konitz as "A Minor Blue in F," but it sounds more like a barely disguised "Star Eyes." "She's Wild As Springtime," also credited to Konitz, actually features the alto saxophonist in a lively blues setting. This long out of print CD is not really essential, but it is worth acquiring if found at a budget price. Ken Dryden

This should be a Joe Carter album. His group plays throughout. Konitz and Farmer play on separate sessions. This album has been long out of print.

LEE KONITZ | PEGGY STERN - Lunasea (1992) FLAC (tracks), lossless
Altoist Lee Konitz certainly covers a lot of ground on this Soul Note CD. Performing with his recent discovery Peggy Stern on piano, guitarist Vic Juris, bassist Harvie Swartz, drummer Jeff Williams and percussionist Guilherme Franco, Konitz and his players perform everything from jams in the Lennie Tristano tradition and Brazilian pieces that are almost pop-oriented to free improvisations. Stern is quite impressive throughout the date. Classically trained, she proves from the start that she has a real talent at improvisation and is not afraid to take chances. Konitz sounds inspired by her presence and their interplay makes this an easily recommended set for adventurous listeners. Scott Yanow

LEE KONITZ - Rhapsody II (1996) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
This follow-up to Rhapsody is another eclectic mix, with 19 tracks featuring the veteran alto saxophonist in various small group settings. Baritone sax great Gerry Mulligan and the leader flesh out an inspired duet of "Lover Man" and pianist Peggy Stern joins them for the spacy, extemporaneous "Trio #2." The brilliant flugelhornist Clark Terry is only featured on three very brief improvisations based on "Indiana," which is wasting a great talent. Konitz switches to soprano sax for a moody version of "You Don't Know What Love Is" with vocalist Sheila Jordan and bassist Harvie Swartz. This is an interesting but not essential CD that falls short of its namesake predecessor and The Lee Konitz Duets (Original Jazz Classics). Ken Dryden
