Versatility has gotten vocalist Dianne Reeves in trouble. Those who feel
she could be a great jazz singer want her to stick to scat singing and
interpreting show tunes; others who enjoyed the light fusion and urban
contemporary hits prefer that she look toward the future. Reeves does a
little of both on her this set. Art And Survival includes her most
hard-hitting message songs to date. The only problem is that Reeves'
voice doesn't lend itself to shouts or expressing defiance; she sounds
strained on "Endangered Species" and seems more like she's presenting a
diatribe than expounding on a theme. Overall, Art And Survival is
neither '90s revisited bop nor overtly commercial Quiet Storm fodder.
Dianne Reeves is really seeking a middle ground between her two
audiences, and if everything here doesn't work, at least she keeps
forging ahead. Ron Wynn

GORDON GOODWIN´S BIG PHAT BAND — Swingin' for the Fences (2000) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless
Saxophonist Gordon Goodwin (heard on this CD on alto and soprano) has loved big bands since he was a child. He arranged all of the music for his 18-piece big band's release, contributing nine of the ten compositions (all but Bach's "Two Part Invention in D Minor") and getting several notable guest soloists to make appearances. The music is mostly modern mainstream, swinging while utilizing some advanced harmonies. There are a few departures including "Sing Sang Sung" (a number based a bit on "Sing Sing Sing"), the Bach selection, a couple Latin jazz pieces, and the funky "There's the Rub" and "A Few Good Men." Among the main soloists from the orchestra are Goodwin, trombonist Andy Martin, pianist Tom Ranier, and tenorman Dan Higgins. The guests (on two songs apiece) are trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, clarinetist Eddie Daniels, and altoists Eric Marienthal and Brandon Fields. Fans of contemporary big bands will find much to enjoy on this fun set. Scott Yanow

EMILY REMLER - This Is Me (1990) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Emily Remler's first -- and tragically, her last -- excursion into electric jazz-pop indicates that she could have become a strong force in that area had she not died. Though Remler's Concord recordings earned her a great deal of respect in hard bop circles, she felt limited creatively and was quite anxious to experiment in the electric realm. On her final session, This Is Me, the guitarist incorporates pop and rock elements on her own terms -- maintaining her musical integrity and avoiding radio-oriented smooth jazz drivel altogether. What remains constant is the warm and lyrical nature of her playing. While the influence of Wes Montgomery and Herb Ellis remains, some of these pieces indicate that she was paying close attention to Pat Metheny. by Alex Henderson
