JIMMY CLEVELAND - Introducing Jimmy Cleveland and His All Stars (1956-2000) RM / FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

The first of five albums headed by trombonist Jimmy Cleveland during 1955-1959 (he has not led any since), this out of print LP (which was reissued by Trip in the 1970s) features Cleveland in medium-size groups with trumpeter Ernie Royal; either Lucky Thompson or Jerome Richardson on tenor; baritonist Cecil Payne; Hank Jones, John Williams, or Wade Legge on piano; Barry Galbraith, Paul Chambers, or Oscar Pettiford on bass; and either Max Roach, Osie Johnson, or Joe Harris on drums. The all-star cast interprets a variety of Quincy Jones arrangements, alternating standards with lesser-known originals, and although many of his sidemen get fine spots, Cleveland generally wins solo honors.  by Scott Yanow

BOB BROOKMEYER - Electricity (1994) APE (image+.cue), lossless

Listeners expecting the music on this CD to be similar to Bob Brookmeyer's jazz records of the 1950s will be surprised. The emphasis here is not on Brookmeyer's valve trombone playing (which is barely heard other than on "No Song" and "The Crystal Palace") but on his very adventurous writing for an electronic group (with guitarist John Abercrombie and two keyboard players) and the horns of the WDR Big Band. The six originals are essentially mood music, setting up atmospheres that develop slowly and are occasionally explosive, particularly when Abercrombie stretches out. This well played and creative music is easier to respect than to love. by Scott Yanow

J.J. JOHNSON / KAI WINDING - Trombone For Two [1956] MOSAIC

The J.J. Johnson-Kai Winding quintet became one of the more unlikely successes of the mid-'50s, recording nine albums during their two years of steady collaborations. Their first Columbia LP (there would be five) has such likable songs as "Give Me the Simple Life," "Trombone for Two," "It's Sand Man," "Let's Get Away from It All" and "This Can't Be Love." With pianist Dick Katz, bassist Paul Chambers (who would soon join Miles Davis) and drummer Osie Johnson, the focus is almost entirely on the competitive but complementary trombonists. The results are bop-based but full of surprises, tasteful but not always predictable. All of this group's albums deserve to be reissued in coherent fashion on CD; this one will be hard to find. by Scott Yanow
