DEBBY MOORE - My Kind of Blues (1960-2007) FLAC (tracks), lossless

As its title promises, My Kind of Blues captures a distinctly personal interpretation of familiar blues and jazz standards--Debby Moore's uncommonly warm and gentle vocals soften the blow delivered by the lyrics of "How Come You Do Me Like You Do" and "Nothin' But Trouble on My Mind," transforming their melancholy into profound compassion and understanding. Nuanced contributions from trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, pianist Jimmy Jones, guitarist Barry Galbraith, bassist George Duvivier, and drummer Elvin Jones further underscore the session's feather-light beauty. Fresh Sound's 2007 CD reissue appends the bonus cut "Get a Feeling." Jason Ankeny

SARAH VAUGHAN — How Long Has This Been Going On? (1978) Three Version (1985, RM | Pablo Records – J33J 20044 JP) + (1987, RM | Pablo Records – 98.848 EU) + (2003, RM | XRCD, Heritage Of Jazz by XRCD – 40) FLAC (image+tracks+.cue), lossless

This set features the great Sarah Vaughan in a typically spontaneous Norman Granz production for Pablo with pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarist Joe Pass, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Louie Bellson. Sassy sounds wonderful stretching out on such songs as "Midnight Sun," "More Than You Know," "Teach Me Tonight," and "Body and Soul," among others. All ten of the melodies are veteran standards that she knew backwards but still greeted with enthusiasm. A very good example of late-period Sarah Vaughan. Scott Yanow

BILLIE HOLIDAY — Billie's Blues (1988) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Most of this excellent CD features one of Billie Holiday's finest concert recordings of the 1950s. Recorded in Europe before an admiring audience, this enjoyable set finds Lady Day performing seven of her standards with her trio and joining in for jam session versions of "Billie's Blues" and "Lover Come Back to Me" with an all-star group starring clarinetist Buddy DeFranco, vibraphonist Red Norvo and guitarist Jimmy Raney. These performances (which find Holiday in stronger voice than on her studio recordings of the period) have also been included in Verve's massive CD box set. This program concludes with Holiday's four rare sides for Aladdin in 1951 (between her Decca and Verve periods) which are highlighted by two blues and "Detour Ahead," and her 1942 studio recording of "Trav'lin' Light" with Paul Whiteman's Orchestra.

CASSANDRA WILSON — New Moon Daughter (1996) Two Version (BN – CDP 7243 8 US + BN – TOCJ-5996 JP) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Singer Cassandra Wilson, who has had a rather diverse career that has ranged from the free funk of M-Base to standards à la Betty Carter, has in recent times adopted a folk-oriented style a little reminiscent of Nina Simone. On New Moon Daughter her repertoire ranges from U2 to Son House, from Hoagy Carmichael to Hank Williams ("I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"); it is certainly the only album ever that contains both the Monkees' "Last Train to Clarksville" and "Strange Fruit." This CD is a surprise best-seller, for Wilson's voice actually sounds quite bored and emotionally detached. She deserves great credit for stretching herself, but one has to dig deep to find any warmth in her overly cool approach. Scott Yanow
