RAY CHARLES - Eight Classic Albums (2011) 4CD / RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This varied, budget-priced, four-disc set collects seven of the great Ray Charles' Atlantic Records LPs, plus an LP from ABC Records in the same package, which means one hears Charles in all sorts of formats, with small combos, at the piano in an intimate setting, with full orchestras, and in live performance, and it adds up to a wide-angle look at one of the most important voices of 20th century pop music. Included are the albums Ray Charles and The Great Ray Charles, both from 1957, Yes, Indeed!! and Brothers of Soul, both from 1958, Ray Charles at Newport, What'd I Say, and The Genius of Ray Charles, all from 1959, and The Genius Hits the Road from 1960. Genius, indeed -- this is vintage Ray Charles in the middle of his legendary career, all for a budget price. by Steve Leggett

LITTLE STEVIE WONDER - Tribute to Uncle Ray [1962]

"Little Stevie Wonder, Tamla's 11-year-old musical genius, is blind, a similarity he shares with a famed musician and vocalist of today," shamelessly announce the liner notes of this album. Unfortunately, Wonder at 11 does not share much of Ray Charles's vocal abilities, even when he is singing Charles' songs (others are "originals in the style of his idol") and, since he doesn't play on the record, there's no similarity there either. Today, listening to a child emote his way through songs like "Drown In My Own Tears" is a curiosity at best, and the album is only for hardcore Wonder fanatics. by William Ruhlmann

STEVIE WONDER - The Jazz Soul of Little Stevie [1962] MOTOWN

Stevie Wonder's debut album, released when he was 11, is still an amazing musical document, showcasing his skills as a percussionist (drums and bongos), chromatic harmonica player, keyboardist (piano and organ), and composer -- and he was prodigious in all four categories. All of these skills are highlighted throughout this record, and Wonder's youthful, exuberant voice had a maturity suggesting that greatness was around the corner. Perhaps most surprising to contemporary listeners will be the emphasis on instrumentals, which made this a fairly unusual album by Motown standards to begin with. Apart from a few shouts in the background in some of the more free-form tracks, there's not a vocal to be heard here, yet the sounds are rich and diverse enough that one never misses them. What's more, a lot of what's here is extremely sophisticated instrumental music for its time, and the "jazz" reference in the title is not a matter of optimistic convenience or self-aggrandizement -- a lot of this is legitimate jazz. by Bruce Eder

ANNA KING - Back to Soul [2006]

Anna King's only album is notable not so much for her vocals (though they're good) as the involvement of James Brown as producer; Brown (usually under pseudonyms) also wrote some of the material. King was a part of Brown's touring show at the time these tracks were recorded in 1963 and 1964, and unsurprisingly the sound is very similar to the kind of stuff her producer was doing in the early '60s before his leap into funk: hard, bluesy R&B-proto-soul, with tight band arrangements including horns and organ. A few covers of outside material are thrown in (Martha & the Vandellas' "Come and Get These Memories," Chuck Jackson's "I Don't Want to Cry"), but overall it sounds a little like a James Brown session with a different singer. Unkindly, some might listen to this and wonder how much better it could have sounded if Brown had done the singing, and it's also evident that while the songs are sturdy enough, J.B. was holding onto the real killers for himself. That would be doing the record a bit of a disservice, however, because King's vocals are acceptably gritty and powerful. The songs are solid, if not on the killer level of something like "Out of Sight," with Brown's up-tempo "If You Don't Think" being a particular standout owing to its sharp bluesy guitar lines and dramatic horn punctuations. Also on the record is her hit duet with Bobby Byrd, "Baby Baby Baby." It's unfortunate King wasn't able to record much more material to speak of with Brown or anyone else, but this is a good one-shot early soul LP, and recommended to general James Brown fans for its accurate reflection of his instrumental sound circa 1963-1964. by Richie Unterberger
