KEN PEPLOWSKI - Double Exposure (1987) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Ken Peplowski's debut as a leader has plenty of brilliant playing. Peplowski, doubling on clarinet and tenor, is joined by guitarist Ed Bickert, pianist John Bunch, bassist John Goldsby and drummer Terry Clarke. Although the repertoire includes Charlie Parker's "Segment" and Hank Mobley's obscure "High and Flighty," Peplowski comes across as a superior swing specialist, particularly on such numbers as "I Would Do Anything for You," "Jubilee" and "Careless Love." A superb start to an important career. by Scott Yanow

THE KEN PEPLOWSKI QUINTET - The Natural Touch (1992) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Ken Peplowski has been one of the most consistent performers in the "new mainstream" movement of the 1990s. Whether playing his fluent clarinet or warm tenor, Peplowski sounds quite comfortable as a creative swing player. As usual, this date with pianist Ben Aronov, guitarist Frank Vignola, bassist Murray Wall and drummer Tom Helito includes a couple more recent tunes (including Thelonious Monk's "Evidence" and originals by Aronov and Vignola), but it is the swing standards (such as "The One I Love Belongs to Somebody Else," "Evenin'," and "I Thought About You") that are most memorable. by Scott Yanow

KEN PEPLOWSKI - It's a Lonesome Old Town (1995) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Ken Peplowski has long been open to playing in more modern idioms of jazz while not losing his facilities or interest in the older styles. On this CD, Peplowski -- doubling as usual on clarinet and tenor -- is joined by guitarist Alden, pianist Allen Farnham, bassist Greg Cohen and the late drummer Alan Dawson. In addition, all but the final two of the dozen selections add either guitarist Charlie Byrd (who is on five songs), trumpeter Tom Harrell or pianist Marian McPartland (the latter two, on three songs apiece, both appear on "Last Night When We Were Young"). The repertoire, which has several expected swing standards, also includes a boppish original by Harrell (the opening "More Than Ever") and a song apiece by Lennon & McCartney, Sonny Stitt and Antonio Carlos Jobim. "These Foolish Things" and "Supposin'" are particularly delightful, for they feature a trio comprised of Pep and the two guitars. This was the first time Alden and Byrd had recorded together, and their interplay is quite special. There are many subtle surprises throughout the set, such as the tango rhythm given "It's a Lonesome Old Town," the pure joy to be heard in the jubilant Brazilian folk song "Bonicrates De Muletas," the cooking bebop of "The Eternal Triangle," and the effective transformation of the Beatles' "In My Life" into a jazz ballad. The tricky Peplowski original "Crimehouse" (based on "Limehouse Blues") wraps up the inventive and rewarding set. by Scott Yanow

LOUIS ARMSTRONG - Louis Armstrong Plays W. C. Handy (1954-1999) SACD / DSF-WV STEREO

This recording was not only Louis Armstrong's finest record of the 1950s but one of the truly classic jazz sets. Armstrong and his All-Stars (trombonist Trummy Young, clarinetist Barney Bigard, pianist Billy Kyle, bassist Arvell Shaw, drummer Barrett Deems, and singer Velma Middleton) were clearly inspired by the fresh repertoire, 11 songs written by W.C. Handy. Their nearly nine-minute version of "St. Louis Blues" -- with witty vocals, roaring Young trombone, and a couple of long majestic trumpet solos -- is arguably the greatest version of the oft-recorded song. Other highlights include "Loveless Love," "Beale Street Blues," and a romping version of "Ole Miss Blues." Essential music for all serious jazz collections. [Some reissues also include rehearsal versions of three songs, Louis Armstrong telling a joke, and a brief George Avakian interview with W.C. Handy.] by Scott Yanow

LOUIS ARMSTRONG AND HIS ALL STARS - Ambassador Satch (1955-2000) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

As Louis Armstrong traversed the globe, bringing jazz to every corner of it, live recordings became the norm. This reissue brings together 1955 concert recordings with the All-Stars from Milan and Amsterdam, buffeted with three previously unreleased bonus studio tracks recorded in New York and Hollywood. Both Satchmo and the All-Stars are in top-notch form here, playing with a real spirit of abandon. Another real good one to add to the collection. by Cub Koda

LOUIS ARMSTRONG AND THE ALL STARS - New Orleans Nights (1957) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Verve's 2008 reissue of New Orleans Nights, a Louis Armstrong album originally released on Decca in 1957, is a compilation of recordings made in 1950 and 1954 by two different bands operating under the noble mantle of Louis Armstrong and the All Stars. "Panama," "New Orleans Function," "My Bucket's Got a Hole in It," and "Bugle Call Rag" testify to the integrity of the earlier group, with Armstrong leading Jack Teagarden, Barney Bigard, Earl Hines, Arvell Shaw, and Cozy Cole, who is granted extra long drum breaks during the "Bugle Call Rag." On "Struttin' with Some Barbecue" and "Basin Street Blues," Tea is replaced by Trummy Young, Hines by Billy Kyle, and Cole by Kenny John. Tenor saxophonist Bud Freeman sat in on "Basin Street"; it's a pity that he didn't participate on "Barbecue," as the warmth and ease that characterizes this elegant update of Lil Hardin Armstrong's magnum opus would have fit Freeman's personality like a favorite pair of argyles. by arwulf arwulf

BARBARA LEA - The Evil is Afraid of Music [1992] FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Willard Robison was one of the more underrated songwriters, whose wistful melodies, unexpected chord changes, and nostalgic lyrics (which often yearned for a earlier simpler time) were actually quite charming. On this CD reissue, singer Barbara Lea is joined by a rhythm section headed by pianist Loonis McGlohon in 1976 (clarinetist Bob Mitchell sits in on one song), and on five equally rewarding numbers recorded in 1992 with pianist Dick Cary, guitarist Dave Koonse, and bassist Putter Smith. (The latter were recorded so as to bolster the playing time of the CD.) Lea, whose basic and lightly swinging style perfectly fits this music, performs such numbers as "Think Well of Me," "Guess I'll Go Back Home," "Deep Elm," "A Woman Alone with the Blues," and Robison's three best-known songs: "A Cottage for Sale," "'Tain't So, Honey, 'Tain't So," and "Old Folks." A perfect project. by Scott Yanow

BARBARA LEA - Barbara Lea With The Johnny Windhurst Quintets [1957]

Singer Barbara Lea's second album is pretty definitive of her early years. Lea is joined by the great (but ill fated and largely forgotten) trumpeter Johnny Windhurst, Dick Cary on either piano or alto horn, sometimes pianist Richard Lowman, guitarist Al Casamenti, bassist Al Hall, and drummer Osie Johnson. Originally a dozen selections, the CD reissue adds an alternate take and an additional title. Lea remains true to the lyrics yet uplifts the material, while the rhythm section swings lightly. Among the many highlights are "Nobody Else but You," "I'm Comin' Virginia," "My Honey's Lovin' Arms," and "Baltimore Oriole." Delightful music by a singer who deserves to be celebrated.  by Scott Yanow

PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND - New Orleans, Vol.I [1977]

In 1961, art dealer Larry Borenstein opened up Preservation Hall in New Orleans. Run by the young tuba player Allan Jaffe, the hall soon became the unofficial home of the city's top veteran musicians. Over time, the the Preservation Hall Jazz Band was formed and went out on constant tours, spreading the joy of New Orleans jazz around the world. Many major players spent time in the group. One of the most famous versions was in the late '70s -- the band heard on this 1977 recording. None of the musicians (trumpeter Percy Humphrey, his brother Willie on clarinet, trombonist Frank Demond (who had replaced the late Jim Robinson), pianist Sing Miller, banjoist/singer Narvin Kimball, drummer Cie Frazier, and Jaffe on tuba) were among the immortals of New Orleans jazz but they fit their roles well. The repertoire on this disc includes Dixieland favorites ("Tiger Rag," "Bill Bailey (Won't You Please Come Home)," and "Panama"); a few spirituals ("Amen," "Over in Gloryland," and "His Eye Is on the Sparrow"); the sentimental "Memories"; and a couple of blues numbers ("Good Blues" and "Joe Avery"). There are no virtuosos in the band, but its ensembles are full of spirit and the music is difficult to listen to without smiling.  by Scott Yanow
