Shirley Eikhard reinvented herself as a torchy jazz singer on the surprisingly successful Going Home. Performing a mixture of originals and covers, Eikhard illustrates that she has grown into a lush, rich vocalist. Her phrasing may not be particularly original, but it is assured and confident, in the style of such classic crooners as Peggy Lee. While her songs are strong, by and large, it's her alluring voice that makes Going Home a strong jazz debut. by Rodney Batdorf
