GARY PEACOCK w/ JAN GARBAREK · TOMASZ STAŃKO · JACK DeJOHNETTE — Voice From The Past - PARADIGM (1982) APE (image+.cue), lossless

This abstract quartet recording by bassist Gary Peacock features Jan Garbarek on tenor and soprano saxes, Tomasz Stanko on trumpet, and Jack DeJohnette on drums. The interplay between Peacock and DeJohnette, captured roughly two years before the release of the first Keith Jarrett standards record, is especially interesting. One only wishes the horns weren't so tinny. Highlights include the freebopping "Moor" (a piece that dates back to the early '60s), the lyrical "Ode for Tomten," and the chill-inducing "Voice From the Past." (The latter resurfaced on 2001's Amaryllis, with Marilyn Crispell and Paul Motian.) David R. Adler

MUSEO ROSENBACH — Zarathustra (1973-2003) RM | Strange Days Presents: BMG Italian Rock Paper Sleeve Collection Series | Two Version | WV + FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

This is probably the most impressive Italian progressive rock album ever, with an astonishing blend of hard and symphonic progressive rock, it is at the same time the most comprehensive guide on 40 minutes on Nietzsche's filosophy, specially on Thus spoke Zarathustra, his last masterwork. Lyrics resume Nietzsche's whole filosophy with powerful words and musical pictorical resourses that made more powerful his filosophical though. A perfect example of this is the final piece, Dell'eterno ritorno, which concludes with an inverse triple rumble on the drums, before the epic symphonic tutti at the end. Released on vinyl in 1973, it's still a perfect example of Italian powerful idiosincrathic musical creativity. José Recillas

BUD SHANK · BOB COOPER — Blowin' Country (1959-1998) West Coast Classics Series | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

West Coast jazz of the 1950s has long had a bad reputation in jazz history books and among East Coast jazz writers who have stereotyped it as an overarranged and bloodless music best heard in movie soundtracks of the era. In reality, it was a multifaceted style, a smoothing of bebop's rough edges that could often be hard-swinging even with its quiet rhythm sections. Two of the finest West Coast players of the '50s were Bud Shank and Bob Cooper. Shank, a cool-toned altoist who on this 1998 CD also plays flute and tenor, appeared on many dates with Coop, who triples here on tenor, bass clarinet and oboe. Despite the CD title (named after a Shank original), the music that they perform on these selections from 1958 (plus five added numbers from 1956) is not country music but swinging jazz. Teamed with either pianist Claude Williamson or guitarist Howard Roberts, bassist Don Prell and drummer Chuck Flores, Shank and Cooper display distinctive but complementary styles, and their tripling on woodwinds gives plenty of variety to the date. Cooper's oboe playing, which preceded Yusef Lateef's, in particular is a joy. Highly recommended. Scott Yanow

KENNY BURRELL · JIMMY RANEY — Two Guitars (1957-1992) RM | Two Version | APE + FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

For this 1957 studio session, the two distinctive but complementary guitarists Kenny Burrell and Jimmy Raney are teamed up in a septet with trumpeter Donald Byrd, altoist Jackie McLean, pianist Mal Waldron, bassist Doug Watkins, and drummer Art Taylor. The full group gets to stretch out on one original each by Watkins and McLean ("Little Melonae") and three from Waldron, while the two standards ("Close Your Eyes" and "Out of Nowhere") are individual features for Burrell and Raney. This is a well-rounded set that may not contain any real surprises, but will be enjoyed by collectors of hard bop. Scott Yanow

KENNY BARRON — Landscape (1985-2004) Two Version | WAV + FLAC (image+.tracks+.cue), lossless

After a long career in jazz that began with his move to New York in 1961, Kenny Barron emerged during the 1980s as one of the dominant pianists in his field, recording a series of first-rate releases for a variety of labels in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. This recording was first made for Baystate Records in Japan and was licensed by the Dutch label Limetree for issue in 1986, although it was recorded in New York. Barron's driving version of the traditional melody "Hush-A-Bye" also provides plenty of solo space for bassist Cecil McBee and a series of drum breaks for Al Foster. "Spring Is Here" is reworked as a gentle samba, while "Dear Old Stockholm," a old Swedish folk tune made popular in jazz by Stan Getz with whom Barron would later make several important live recordings, is pretty straightforward. Barron also includes two fine originals, the tantalizing "Calypso" and the very relaxing "Sunset." This first-rate effort will be appreciated by any fan of the great Kenny Barron. Ken Dryden
