GEORGIA WHITE — Complete Recorded Works In Chronological Order Volume 1 · 1930-1936 (1994) DOCD-5301 | RM | FLAC (tracks), lossless

The first inkling that most people in the late 20th century had about Georgia White was an LP of reissued titles that appeared in the 1970s on the Rosetta label. Some of her party-oriented songs also resurfaced on various Stash collections, linking her in the minds of many listeners with that jolly substance abuse anthem "The Stuff Is Here." During the 1990s, Blues Collection issued a 25-track sampler and Document Records reissued every recording known to have been made by her during the 1930s and early '40s. The first of four volumes dedicated to this fine vocalist focuses mainly upon the earliest records released under her name. Her first recording was made in Chicago in May 1930 with New Orleans clarinetist Jimmie Noone and his Apex Club Orchestra. Having this tidbit at the beginning of her complete recorded works on Document constitutes a sweet treat, especially as the song she sings is a staple of Depression-era pop music at its most auto-suggestive; "When You're Smiling, the Whole World Smiles with You" is usually associated with vaudevillian Ted Lewis, Louis Armstrong when he sang in front of a big band in the early '30s, or that great interpreter of Tin Pan Alley love songs, Billie Holiday. When she began recording regularly for Decca in 1935, Georgia White distinguished herself with a refreshingly honest delivery that combined elements of blues, barrelhouse, and swing in a manner that was earthier, lustier, and less mainstream than had been possible or permissible with the confectionary "get happy" melody she sang with Noone in 1930. Throughout most of the performances reproduced here, White is heard accompanying herself on the piano and singing her own compositions with occasional covers like Victoria Spivey's "You Done Lost Your Good Thing Now" and the punchy "There Ain't Gonna Be No Doggone Afterwhile," a friction-inducing number attributed to Charlie Burse of the Memphis Jug Band and soon to be covered by Decca's Fats Waller emulator Bob Howard. The last four tracks of White's first volume on Document introduce three men who would stick around and accompany her for the next couple of years: pianist and composer Richard M. Jones and bassist John Lindsay (both of New Orleans, LA) and guitarist "Banjo" Ikey Robinson of Dublin, VA. To inaugurate their first session together, White chose to revisit her own "Dupree Blues" and Lil Johnson's "Hot Nuts," to premiere her own Fats Waller-like swing tune "It Must Be Love," and to grind out "Daddy Let Me Lay It on You" to the tune of "Baby Don't You Tear My Clothes." arwulf arwulf

BUMBLE BEE SLIM — Complete Recorded Works In Chronological Order Volume 1 · 1931-1934 | DOCD-5261 (1994) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The first of nine releases devoted to Slim's music. As with many Document releases, the sound is pretty uneven. But considering that "Rough Rugged Road Blues," and recorded in October of 1931, was one of the last sides ever issued by Paramount, and that no copies were known to exist until 1992, one has to live with the considerable surface noise on that number, and on "Honey Bee Blues," and the even worse sound on "Stumbling Block Blues" and "Yo Yo String Blues" (on which one can barely tell that a song is there beneath the scratchiness). "Chain Gang Bound," by comparison, sounds almost like a modern recording, despite dating from exactly the same era. The six Paramount sides here are the only recordings here on which Slim played his own guitar, and his style is clean and engaging, with some very deft slide playing in evidence. The other cuts, mostly for Vocalion, generally sound considerably better and were recorded with piano accompaniment, or a band with piano and guitars, and they have a more sophisticated urban sound, anticipating R&B more than they resemble Slim's earlier rural-style songs. His vocals are also considerably more expressive and show a far greater range. Slim's Vocalion debut, "Greasy Greens" and "I'm Waiting On You," cut in New York, are remarkable performances for 1932. His subsequent sides were all cut in Chicago, and are more readily identifiable with that city's then-burgeoning blues tradition -- none of the Chicago sides are quite as unexpected as the four New York sides, but they're all eminently listenable. The eight sides cut by Bumble Bee Slim & His Three Sharks -- a pretty fair band featuring piano, guitar, and mandolin -- features "Someday Things Will Be Breaking My Way," a song more familiar to modern listeners as "Sitting On Top of the World" and immortalized by Albert King and Cream. "Runnin' Drunk Blues" is a delightful, sprightly rag; and on the latest songs on this volume, the guitar returns to the fore, most notably on "Dead and Gone Mother," which features three guitars. TAMPA RED — Complete Recorded Works In Chronological Order ★ Volume 8 • 1936-1937 | DOCD-5208 (1993) RM | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

For completists, specialists and academics, Document's Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 8 (1936-1937) is invaluable, offering an exhaustive overview of Tampa Red's early recordings. For less dedicated listeners, the disc is a mixed blessing. There are some absolutely wonderful, classic performances on the collection, but the long running time, exacting chronological sequencing, poor fidelity (all cuts are transferred from original acetates and 78s), and number of performances are hard to digest. The serious blues listener will find all these factors to be positive, but enthusiasts and casual listeners will find that the collection is of marginal interest for those very reasons. Thom Owens

TAMPA RED — Complete Recorded Works In Chronological Order ★ Volume 9 • 1938-1939 | DOCD-5209 (1993) RM | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

One of the greatest slide guitarists of the early blues era, and a man with an odd fascination with the kazoo, Tampa Red also fancied himself a piano player and bandleader, tendencies that come to the fore on this ninth installment of Document's attempt to release all of his known recorded work in chronological order. Covering the years 1937 and 1938, this collection is hardly typical of Red's work, since it has relatively few tracks featuring his trademark National Steel slide sound. Half of the disc is given over to small combo jazz pieces featuring Tampa Red's pleasant but ordinary vocal skills, and while these tracks are certainly professional and competent, it is a bit like discovering a Jimi Hendrix record with no guitar on it.  Steve Leggett
