Two Not One combines the contents of five previously issued Storyville CDs, including all three volumes of Warne Marsh and Lee Konitz leading a quintet at the Club Montmartre, plus trio and quartet sessions led by Marsh. With both saxophonists having studied with Lennie Tristano, his stamp is unmistakable, in their playing, compositions, and choice of repertoire. Among the quintet recordings, highlights include Tristano's "April" (an intricate reworking of "I'll Remember April") that features inspired solos by the co-leaders, Konitz's brilliant "Subconscious-Lee" (based on "What Is This Thing Called Love," it became a part of his lifelong repertoire), and a driving setting of Charlie Parker's "Au Privave." Pianist Ole Kock Hansen and bassist Niels Pedersen provide outstanding support, with drums alternating between Svend-Erik Nørregård and Al Levitt, though a different rhythm section is used on some tracks (bassist Peter Ind, guitarist Dave Cliff, and Levitt). For the trio sessions Marsh is joined by Pedersen and Levitt, with Cliff added for the quartet selections. Marsh's tasty "Blues in G Flat" showcases each member of the quartet, while his heartfelt interpretation of "You Don't Know What Love Is" features an inventive bassline by Pedersen. Since this four-CD set contains all of the music of five CDs, it is a very affordable and space-saving option. Ken Dryden

LEE KONITZ - "Leewise" ft. The Jazzpar All Star Nonet (1993) FLAC (tracks), lossless
On this diverse and highly enjoyable set altoist Lee Konitz is heard in a variety of settings. Five songs (four of them recently composed) feature Konitz interacting with a fine Danish nonet and on "Subconscious Lee" he is showcased in a quintet with flugelhornist Allan Botchinsky and pianist Peggy Stern. However it is his six duets (with Stern, Botchinsky, bassist Jesper Lundgaard and fellow altoist Jens Sondergaard) that are most notable. Konitz, who can play as freely as any avant-gardist, somehow always sounds relaxed and thoughtful, turning these duets into comfortable dialogues. Scott Yanow

ARCHIE SHEPP - Archie Shepp & The New York Contemporary Five (1963-2004) RM | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
This historically significant LP has six selections recorded by the New York Contemporary Five on November 11, 1963. The short-lived group, which consists of cornetist Don Cherry, altoist John Tchicai, Archie Shepp on tenor, bassist Don Moore, and drummer J.C. Moses, was avant-garde for the period, influenced most by Ornette Coleman's Quartet; the participation of Coleman's cornetist certainly helped. However, Tchicai (although sometimes hinting at Coleman) had a different approach than Coleman, and it was obvious that Shepp had already developed his own original voice and was the group's most passionate soloist. Together this very interesting quintet (which would soon break up) performs pieces by Coleman, Thelonious Monk (there's a short melodic renditions of "Crepescule with Nellie"), Bill Dixon, Tchicai, Shepp, and Cherry. JOHNNY HODGES - Master of Jazz (1989) APE (image+.cue), lossless
Here is a CD that is highly recommended for swing collectors. Altoist Johnny Hodges and tenor-saxophonist Ben Webster team up for a sextet set from 1960, a club appearance that was released for the first time on this set. Their six performances (all are basic Hodges originals) find the pair of veteran swing stylists in prime form. The remainder of the program (three standards plus Hodges' "Good Queen Bess") is played by a septet dominated by Ellington musicians including the leader/altoist, baritonist Harry Carney, trumpeter Ray Nance and trombonist Lawrence Brown. Excellent music that still has not dated. Scott Yanow

Formerly put out by Storyville, this audiophile CD reissue features the great Zoot Sims performing in a quartet with bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and two notable expatriates: pianist Kenny Drew and drummer Ed Thigpen. Sims, who doubles here on soprano, is in typically swinging form on such numbers as "Too Close for Comfort," "In a Mellowtone," an extended, nearly ten-minute rendition of "All the Things You Are," and "It's All Right with Me." The supporting rhythm section is perfect for this style of music, and Sims is heard throughout in prime form. Scott Yanow

BENNY CARTER QUARTET - Summer Serenade (1980-1986) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Benny Carter has recorded so many excellent swing sessions throughout his lengthy career that it is very difficult to pick out the best ones; there's too much competition. JOHNNY GRIFFIN & EDDIE 'LOCKJAW' DAVIS - Tough Tenors Back Again! (1984-2008) FLAC (tracks), lossless
During 1960-63, Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis teamed up in a two-tenor quintet, inspiring each other to play at their most intense and swinging on a nightly basis. After the band's breakup, Griffin and Davis occasionally had reunions that found them playing as heatedly as ever. This 1998 CD, which released a particularly exciting encounter at Copenhagen's Montmartre in 1984 for the first time, has what might have been their last matchup since Lockjaw passed away two years later. With pianist Harry Pickens, bassist Curtis Lundy and drummer Kenny Washington keeping the momentum moving, the two tough tenors battle it out on a variety of basic material, including "Blues Up and Down" (which has a colorful chorus of conversational commentary by the two tenors before their solos), "Funky Fluke" and "Lester Leaps In." Throughout the heated bebop date, Griffin and Davis are heard at the peak of their powers, and the results are quite memorable. Scott Yanow

JOHNNY GRIFFIN & LOCKJAW DAVIS - Johnny Griffin & Lockjaw Davis in Copenhagen (1984-2007) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis locked horns and raised a little hell during this exciting blowing session that took place at the Café Montmartre in Copenhagen on July 10, 1984. They were aided and abetted by pianist Harry Pickens, bassist Curtis Lundy, and drummer Kenny Washington -- the same rhythm section that had performed with Griff at the Berlin Friedrichstadtpalast nearly a month earlier. The original "Tough Tenors" formula dates back to the early '60s when Griff and Jaws collaborated on a series of definitive, mainstream two-tenor albums. This live reunion date is a marvel of spontaneous combustion; the horns cavort and jostle, barking and purling with joyous abandon. Sadly, this recording lands near the end of the Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis' discography. He was recorded in Europe by producer Norman Granz in 1985, retreated back to the U.S. and passed away in Culver City, CA in November of 1986. This is a reissue of Storyville (#8298), released in 1998 as Tough Tenors Back Again!. arwulf arwulf

JOHNNY GRIFFIN QUARTET ft. KENNY DREW - Catharsis! (1989-1999) FLAC (tracks), lossless
Johnny Griffin had already been living in Europe for 16 years by the time of this club date with fellow expatriate Kenny Drew, along with bassist Jens Melgaard and drummer Ole Streenberg, and the hard-blowing tenor saxophonist enjoys stretching out on a set that primarily features standards. An explosive "Just Friends" opens the evening, followed by a loping and very long (but never dull) "If I Should Lose You." The Danish folk song "Hush-a-Bye," which was also a favorite of fellow tenor saxophonist Stan Getz, is heard in an arrangement that Griffin co-wrote with frequent collaborator Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen. Griffin's up-tempo "Slukefter Blues" sounds like a perfect set closer, but there's more to come with a dreamy treatment of the lovely ballad "Isfahan" and the blazing, somewhat squawking treatment of Thelonious Monk's "Rhythm-a-Ning." This well-recorded live CD will greatly appeal to hard bop fans. Ken Dryden

CLARK TERRY - Clark Terry and His Orchestra featuring Paul Gonsalves (2001) FLAC (tracks), lossless
Critics often complain that small-group sessions comprised of members of the Duke Ellington Orchestra are somewhat disappointing; this is definitely not the case with this session led by Clark Terry, recorded during a 1959 tour of Europe in the final month of the trumpeter's almost eight-year tenure with the band. Fellow Ellington sidemen Paul Gonsalves, Jimmy Woode, and Sam Woodyard are present, along with Raymond Fol at the piano. Terry was one of the most gifted trumpeters to grace the Ellington band and he blossoms when he has more opportunities to solo in a small group setting like this one. Gonsalves proves to be the perfect foil for Terry as they trade lines on several of the numbers. Unlike many dates led by Ellington veterans, this one doesn't rely heavily on songs from the vast Ellington songbook; instead, Terry includes only "Satin Doll," while choosing one standard ("Mean to Me"), a pair of Monk tunes, and five of his own compositions, with "Serenade to a Bus Seat" (a remake of his upbeat instrumental interpretation of the hectic life of a touring musician) proving to be the most memorable. This studio date was recorded for French Decca and has been almost impossible to find prior to the appearance of this Storyville CD, so it should be of great interest to fans of Clark Terry, with the added bonus of a previously unissued alternate take of "Pannonica." MILLI VERNON - Introducing Milli Vernon (1956-2007) Mp3
With its intimate, closing-time atmosphere and thoughtful performances,
Introducing Milli Vernon boasts a maturity and honesty that cut
surprisingly deep -- despite Vernon's relative anonymity, she's a
compelling vocalist with a genuine sense of style and drama. Of course,
it's the names below the title -- trumpeter Ruby Braff, guitarist Jimmy
Raney, and pianist Dave McKenna among them -- that many jazz buffs will
find most appealing, and while their contributions are firmly within the
Storyville label's signature style, the session's overall emphasis and
atmosphere and mood means their contributions are largely subordinate to
Vernon's voice. That said, this is a solid album, even if some of the
material is a bit too slight; given the right song, like "I Don't Know
What Kind of Blues I've Got," Vernon excels. by Jason Ankeny
