César Franck is considered one of the most important French composers of
the 19. century. He was not a native Frenchman, but was born as a child
of German parents in Liège / Belgium. He became a French citizen in
1873. Discovered early on as a prodigy, he studied piano and organ in
both Belgium and France. However, his career as a traveling piano
virtuoso was not successful. As an organist, on the other hand, he was
finally able to gain a foothold and settled in France. He worked as a
teacher and organist, the Parisian Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde with its
magnificent Cavaillé Coll organ became his home.
Like Bruckner
and Messiaen – the two composers he is most often compared to – he was a
deeply believing Christian who filled his music with intense
spirituality. She found her parallel in his private life in an almost
sacred innocence; his disciples called him Father Seraphicus. His
musical style is characterized by intense and rich chromaticism, long,
winding melodic lines and a very individualized counterpoint.
The
edition presents an extensive selection of his works: the famous Violin
Sonata in A major, the Symphony in D minor as well as the organ works,
but also lesser-known works such as the piano trios, the piano quintet
and the string quartet, the great piano works, all songs, the opera
