POLLY BERGEN - Bergen Sings Morgan + The Party's Over (1999) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This Collectables two-fer includes the first two albums that Polly Bergen recorded for Columbia, Bergen Sings Morgan and The Party's Over, which were also her only charting albums. Apparently stuck in the torch-singing mold of Helen Morgan, the Broadway star whom she saluted on her first album, Bergen sings a cavalcade of anthems for a lonely heart: "The Little Things You Used to Do," "Something to Remember You By," "Mean to Me," "Why Was I Born?," "It Never Entered My Mind," "But Not for Me," "I'm Thru With Love," "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye," "I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plan," and "You Don't Know What Love Is." The virtually unending shower of gloom is difficult to take, though it's possible that most listeners will have cried themselves to sleep before the 23 songs have run their course. by John Bush

POLLY BERGEN - All Alone by the Telephone [1959] COLUMBIA / LP / FLAC

All Alone by the Telephone pairs Polly Bergen with arranger Luther Henderson to create a deeply melancholy song cycle that explores romantic estrangement and isolation from a refreshingly adult perspective. Bergen's dusky, world-weary vocals never resort to histrionics, finding their mode of expression in restraint, not release -- her thoughtful interpretations of material like "Glad to Be Unhappy," "Too Late Now," and "By Myself" strip the songs to their core, articulating their themes of loss with hard-fought maturity. Henderson's sympathetic, meticulous arrangements are no less essential to the album's uncommon sophistication. by Jason Ankeny

POLLY BERGEN - My Heart Sings [1959] COLUMBIA / LP / FLAC

My Heart Sings pairs Polly Bergen with arranger Luther Henderson, who shakes up his signature orchestral approach via the addition of cool jazz horns and late-night accoutrements perfectly matched to Bergen's dusky vocals. It's a shame the material is so predictable -- standard "singer with strings" fare like "Sophisticated Lady," "When I Fall in Love," and "I'm in the Mood for Love" -- but the set's style and sophistication make up for covering such familiar ground; for that matter, Bergen is such a distinct performer that even the most well-tread lyrics seem refreshed, and the joy she brings to bubbly renditions of "Lucky Day" and "The Lady Is a Tramp" is infectious. by Jason Ankeny
