MICHEL LEGRAND - Paris Jazz Piano (1959-2000) Jazz In Paris 32 / RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Near the beginning of his career, Michel Legrand was primarily known as a jazz pianist, so it shouldn't be surprising to learn that none of his compositions are present on these 1959 studio sessions, which were issued by Phillips. With bassist Guy Pederson and drummer Gus Wallez, Legrand covers songs by French composers of the day along with the ever-popular "Moulin Rouge" and a somewhat upbeat arrangement of Edith Piaf's usually maudlin "La Vie en Rose," as well as standards from the Great American Songbook by Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Vernon Duke, and Mack Gordon. Most of the songs have a Parisian theme to them. Legrand's piano style is hard to define, as he shows a variety of influences without letting any of them overwhelm his sound. His eventual fame as a composer would grow tremendously during the decades that followed the making of this recording, but this LP from the Jazz in Paris series is well worth purchasing to get a taste of his early career. by Ken Dryden

EARL HINES - Paris One Night Stand (1957-2000) Jazz In Paris 38 / RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
The two 1957 sessions that make up this CD featuring Earl Hines with a pickup rhythm section in Paris were recorded originally for Phillips, with bassist Guy Pedersen and drummer Gus Wallez. The pianist is in top form, including just a little of the Dixieland repertoire ("Royal Garden Blues" and "Muskrat Ramble") that typically dominated most of his recordings made in the U.S. during this period, and spending more time exploring favorite warhorses like "Hallelujah" and "Makin' Whoopee," as well as already classic jazz compositions such as "If I Could Be With You One Hour Tonight" and "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)." While the tracks are generally brief, the music is consistently swinging at a high level and four bonus tracks have been added to the CD reissue, so it should be considered an essential purchase for fans of Earl "Fatha" Hines. by Ken Dryden

JEAN-LUC PONTY - Jazz Long Playing (1964-2000) Jazz In Paris 43 / RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
These 1964 sessions marked jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty's recording
debut as a leader. In spite of his choice of instrument, he was mainly
influenced by bop musicians (especially saxophonists and trumpeters)
rather than fellow Frenchmen, swing violinist Stéphane Grappelli. At
this stage in his career, he chose mostly compositions by European
musicians of his generation, along with tunes American jazz compositions
that had stood the test of time. His angular playing in Martial Solal's
"Une Nui Au Violon" contrasts with his later venture into jazz fusion,
while his dash through Charlie Parker's "Au Privave" is almost
immediately halted to first showcase drummer Daniel Humair then flautist
Michel Portal before he takes center-stage with a blazing solo. He also
is quite comfortable in a ballad setting, with a warm treatment of
Django Reinhardt's "Manoir de Mes Reves," though it is on his own turf,
as it isn't played anything like Grappelli's recording with the
legendary guitarist. The violinist's sole original is "YTNOP Blues,"
which opens with a pizzicato vamp then showcases bassist Guy Pedersen
and pianist Eddy Louiss before Ponty finally opens things up with a
slash-and-burn solo that evokes a bit of Stuff Smith influence for a
moment. The only misfire is a dull treatment of "I Want to Talk About
You" which is plagued by Louiss' dated sounding organ. Reissued as a
part of the Jazz in Paris series in 2000, this valuable introduction to
Jean-Luc Ponty has already lapsed from print. by Ken Dryden

LIONEL HAMPTON - Lionel Hampton And His French New Sound Vol. 1 (1955-2000) Jazz In Paris 44 / RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Lionel Hampton joins forces with a number of top French musicians for this 1955 studio session, reissued in Verve's Jazz in Paris series. Three of the four compositions are Hampton's, swinging tunes arranged by Christian Chevalier. The first, "Voice of the North," is primarily for the leader's matchless vibes with the rhythm section, though individual soloists are featured, including fellow Americans Nat Adderley and Benny Bailey on trumpets and David Amram on French horn, as well as clarinetist Maurice Meunier and baritone saxophonist William Boucaya. It's just Hampton and the rhythm section (pianist René Urtreger, bassist Guy Pedersen, and drummer Jean-Baptiste Reilles) for the long workout of "À la French." The one standard of the date, "Crazy Rhythm," suffers from somewhat muddy sound, particularly the overly distant brass. Guitarist Sacha Distel, though admittedly intimidated by Hampton, rises to the leader's level of playing with a fine solo. Overall, this is an enjoyable if not quite essential CD by Lionel Hampton. by Ken Dryden

LIONEL HAMPTON - Lionel Hampton And His French New Sound Vol. 2 (1955-2000) Jazz In Paris 45 / RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless
Lionel Hampton is joined by a number of top French jazz musicians plus Nat Adderley and American expatriate Benny Bailey for this 1955 studio session, playing Christian Chevalier's charts. "All the Things You Are" features the vibraphonist with the rhythm section, with strong solo efforts by guitarist Sacha Distel and pianist René Urtreger, along with the leader. The low-key, lengthy treatment of "I Cover the Waterfront" almost suggests a Jazz at the Philharmonic session, showcasing nice features for trumpeter Bernard Hullin, tenor saxophonist Maurice Meunier, Urtreger, and Hampton. Things finally seem to loosen up with Hampton's swinging riff tune "Red Ribbon," with the solid rhythm and powerful brass and reeds igniting the vibraphonist, who trades solos with several players, including French horn player Dave Amram. "Night and Day," like "I Cover the Waterfront," is stretched out considerably, but benefits from a brisker setting. A long overlooked recording, this laudable date was finally reissued by Universal in 2000 as a part of its very affordable Jazz in Paris series. by Ken Dryden
