RED GARLAND — I Left My Heart ... (1978-1999) FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Recorded during pianist Red Garland's final period, this enjoyable outing (a Muse LP) has three trio numbers by Garland with bassist Chris Amberger and drummer Eddie Moore plus three selections that add altoist Leo Wright to make the group a quartet. Garland's style was unchanged from the '50s, as he shows on "Will You Still Be Mine" and "Bye Bye Blackbird." Wright's portion of the date finds him playing lyrically on two ballads (including a surprise version of "I Left My Heart in San Francisco") and swinging on "Bag's Groove." The set was recorded live at San Francisco's Keystone Korner and was clearly a happy occasion. Scott Yanow    Tracklist & Credits :

DEWEY REDMAN - The Ear of the Behearer (1973-1998) RM | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This 1998 CD reissues Dewey Redman's entire The Ear of the Behearer album (although it leaves out an alternate take of "Interconnection" that was released on a different set), plus four of the seven selections from his Coincide record of a year later. Some of the music is quite adventurous and free, while other tracks include some freebop, a struttin' blues ("Boody"), and quieter ballads. Redman, a distinctive tenor saxophonist, actually plays alto on five of the first six selections; he is less memorable (although no less exploratory) on the smaller horn. Redman is joined on most cuts by trumpeter Ted Daniel, throughout the Behearer date by cellist Jane Robertson, and on the full set by bassist Sirone and drummer Eddie Moore; violinist Leroy Jenkins and percussionist Danny Johnson also make guest appearances. These two albums were Redman's only sets as a leader for Impulse. Intriguing music. Scott Yanow

DEWEY REDMAN - Coincide (1975) lp | FLAC (tracks), lossless

Dewey Redman is featured in a few different settings on this intriguing and generally successful album. The best cuts are the originals that match Redman's tenor with bassist Sirone and drummer Eddie Moore. In addition, he is heard on zither on two cuts (one of which is unaccompanied), and his trio adds trumpeter Ted Daniel and violinist Leroy Jenkins for two complex originals; Redman switches to clarinet on "Somnifacient." Although it is interesting to hear Redman on clarinet and zither, his tenor playing is clearly his strong point and the main reason to search for this LP. His ten-minute workout on "Qow" is outstanding. Scott Yanow

DEWEY REDMAN - Musics (1978-1995) RM | Original Jazz Classics Limited Edition Series | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This is one of tenor-saxophonist Dewey Redman's more accessible sessions. With the assistance of pianist Fred Simmons, bassist Mark Helias and drummer Eddie Moore, Redman is heard on the lyrical ballad "Alone Again (Naturally)," a bossa nova, jamming over parade rhythms and performing originals that sometimes are advanced bop. The music is excellent although not as explorative as most of Redman's other recordings. This fine Galaxy set has been reissued on CD in the OJC series. Scott Yanow

DEWEY REDMAN - Soundsigns (1981) lp | FLAC (tracks), lossless

Recorded at the same sessions that resulted in Musics, this LP (which has not yet been reissued on CD) is actually more exploratory. Tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman interacts with both Mark Helias and Charlie Haden on "Piece for Tenor and Two Basses," swings semi-conventionally on "Half Nelson" (which adds pianist Fred Simmons and drummer Eddie Moore), and engages in some sonic explorations on "Adesso Lo Sai." Strangest of all is "Come Earth," which finds Redman switching to harmonica, the two bassists bowing wildly and Moore playing a musical saw. That number rambles on colorfully but without much direction for ten minutes. Scott Yanow

PHAROAH SANDERS - Moon Child (1990-2015) RM | Timeless Jazz Master Collection 37 | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

By this point in his career, Sanders had largely withdrawn from the kind of screeching avant-gardism on which he at first staked his reputation. The opening "Moon Child," with its attractively spacy vocals, is reminiscent of the days of "The Creator Has a Master Plan," but this version sounds too contrived to rival the classic earlier recording. The mood is subdued throughout and the choice of tunes definitely on the conservative side ("All or Nothing at All" and "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes," among the six tracks). William Henderson is lovely on piano, while the drummer (Eddie Moore) and percussionist (Cheikh Tidiane Fale) keep to the quiet side. The results may have originally disappointed some of Sanders' fans, but with time the saxophonist clearly reinvented himself as a more traditional improviser capable of thoughtful and pensive deliberations.
