BUNKY GREEN — Playin' For Keeps (2007) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Playin' for Keeps draws on inspirations spanning from Tin Pan Alley to bossa nova to the British Invasion to forge a soul-jazz groove with its own distinct sensibility. Though rooted in bop, Bunky Green embraces both pop and avant-garde idioms as well, channeling his myriad influences to create a soulful and lithe sound with an impressive command of space and time. Bassist Cleveland Eaton, pianist Willie Pickens, and drummer Harold Jones are all in fine form throughout, clearly relishing the indelible melodies of selections like "The Shadow of Your Smile" and "Yesterday." Green's edgy, forceful alto is nevertheless the focal point, navigating the material with skill and finesse. Jason Ankeny

THE RAMSEY LEWIS TRIO - Another Voyage (1969-2004) RM / FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Issued in September 1969, Another Voyage is one of the Ramsey Lewis Trio's best efforts, during its initial release making it into the R&B Top 35. With the lineup of Lewis, drummer Maurice White, and bassist Cleveland Eaton, the LP serves as a prime example of the muscular Chicago sound while preserving the pianist's trademark elegance. In addition to such throbbing, kinetic workouts as Eddie Harris' "Bold and Black" and "If You've Got It Flaunt It, Pts. 1-2," there's a nice mid-groovin' cover of Stevie Wonder's "My Cherie Amour," Harris' contemplative "How Beautiful Is Spring," and the sumptuous "Opus V," written by Charles Stepney. Of special note is future Earth, Wind & Fire leader White's use of the kalimba on "Uhuru." The pumping "Do What You Wanna" became a post-release favorite during the late '90s and was included on the two-LP set Inside Ramsey Lewis. by Ed Hogan

RAMSEY LEWIS - Funky Serenity (1973-2001) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Cleveland Eaton, Ed Greene, and Morris Jennings accompany Ramsey Lewis on this commercial-flavored 1973 release. While jazz/pop/soul versions of "Where Is the Love" and "If Loving You Is Wrong" come off limp, spacy renditions of "Nights in White Satin"; Eaton, Jennings, and Lewis' two compositions, "Serene Funk" and "Dreams"; and a beautiful interpretation of Thom Bell and Linda Creed's "Betcha by Golly Wow" make this an enjoyable and essential reissue.
