TONY SCOTT — Tony Scott (1967-2004) RM | Serie LP Reproduction | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Tony Scott's 1967 self-titled album for Verve is a good example of what makes him such an interesting but frustrating artist. After branching out from mainstream jazz in the 1950s, clarinetist Scott began exploring ethnic and folk music. Here listeners find him switching between straight-ahead standards and avant-garde, Eastern-influenced melodies. The result is utterly schizophrenic and ultimately makes for a frustrating listen. That said, Scott is a phenomenal musician and -- when he sticks to the experimental stuff -- is quite compelling. Matt Collar   Tracklist & Credits :

LEE KONITZ - Zo Ko Ma (1968-2008) RM | Series : Most Perfect Sound Edition | FLAC (tracks), lossless

Guitarist Attila Zoller, alto saxophonist Lee Konitz and trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff had played with one another on earlier occasions for over a decade, but this 1968 recording was their first together though Zo-Ko-Ma is officially billed by producer Joachim Ernst-Berendt as the "Attila Zoller-Lee Konitz Quartet with guest Albert Mangelsdorff." Joined by bassist Barre Phillips and drummer Stu Martin on some tracks, a good deal of the music has an experimental feeling to it, especially Konitz's "Feeling-In and Filling-In Villingen," which feature overlapping improvisations by the three players. Zoller's easygoing waltz "At Twighlite" and Mangelsdorff's "Alat's Mood" (the latter a trombone/guitar duet) are straight-ahead arrangements, while Konitz's haunting "Danke for the Memory" is a spacy trio piece with bass and guitar. Issued on LP by MPS in Europe, this extraordinary session is long overdue to be re-released on CD. Ken Dryden

LEE KONITZ - From Newport to Nice (1992) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

This compilation consists of live tracks from various sources, including festivals, television and radio broadcasts over a quarter century. While the playing of Konitz and his various band mates is first rate, the sound quality ranges from excellent to poor, probably due to the condition of the tapes and the fact that some of the songs likely come from audience tapes. Highlights include "All The Things You Are," heard in a swinging quintet that included guitarist Rene Thomas and pianist Misha Mengleberg; Lennie Tristano's "At Twilight," by a quartet that featured the late guitarist Atilla Zoller; and the lengthy but delightful second version of "Lover Man," in a quartet with Shelly Manne, Red Mitchell and Jimmy Rowles. Konitz fans should not let the sometimes dismal sound quality keep them from acquiring this excellent CD. Ken Dryden

LEE KONITZ | DON FRIEDMAN | ATTILA ZOLLER - Thingin' (1995-2000) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

With the superb packaging and quality of sound for which the Swiss hatOLOGY label is noted, and the adventurous, Tristano-tinged blowing for which saxophonist Lee Konitz is known, this set of mostly originals ("Alone Together" being the exception) should satisfy a broad range of listeners. Joined by pianist Don Friedman and guitarist Attila Zoller, the trio dances gently with nuanced patter and exquisite precision, creating minor gems of graceful expansion. The unique instrumentation precisely fits the style of Konitz, bringing back memories of past encounters. Zollar adds a pleasing touch with his dry, lilting approach. If the session does not totally stand out from the wealth of others the saxophonist has led it is only because of the plethora of high quality disks Konitz has produced during his career. In every way, this one is a worthy contribution to his discography, with the characteristic beautiful and mellow tone, laid-back style, and advanced harmonics. Steve Loewy
