KALACAKRA — Crawling To Lhasa (1972-2001) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

TKalacakra’s "Crawling to Lhasa" is one of the few German psychedelic classics. Their 1972 LP has become such an attractive collectors’ item (today’s value is US$400 in mint condition) that several bootlegs have appeared on the market. In 1993, an official CD version was released on the Lost Pipedreams label, which has long since become unavailable. The final release on the Garden of Delights label contains a 32-page colour booklet, featuring a detailed history of the Duisburg band and their community together with numerous photographs, which reflect the sombre, stoned atmosphere of the record in a perfect manner. "Raga no. 11" is probably the best track, with "Nearby Shiras" reflecting the most psychedelic aspect of the band’s music. It is about the Black Plague raging in this Persian town hundreds of years ago. GOD

  2. Obscure Krautrock fact: Kalacakra could have gotten wide German exposure through a TV music deal (the executives involved were enamored of their sound & style) but their singer decided to disappear in Ibiza instead. They didn't get a second chance.

The small studio this was recorded in, and its producer, are highly regarded for this and some of the other albums recorded here. One was Dom- Edge of Time.

Great blog, nice to see German rock alongside obscure jazz. And not just because the artists are obscure, because the recordings are good... many bloggers fail to make that distinction. Cheers
