DINAH SHORE — The Dinah Shore Collection : Columbia and RCA Recordings 1942-1948 (1999) RM | 2CD | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Vocalion's two-disc The Dinah Shore Collection focuses on the singer's RCA and Columbia period, spanning her most popular years. At first glance, it appears to be an excellent summation, including no less than 50 songs and many great performances. Unfortunately though, the compilers must have assumed that listeners had no need for several of Shore's biggest hits of the era, including "I Walk Alone," "Anniversary Song," and "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons." There's also a troubling four-year gap (1942-1946) that coincides with the World War II recording ban. (In fact, except for the first five songs, the entire set consists of recordings from 1946-1948.) The odd part here is that Victor -- a division of RCA, so no trouble for the compilers from a licensing standpoint -- continued to release material during those years. It begs the question: Why did Vocalion skip almost two dozen Hit Parade entries? Regardless of what's missing, there's still a lot of great material here and it's presented in the best sound ever heard for these recordings -- it's just that The Dinah Shore Collection is obviously tailored to collectors and vocal-music obsessives. DAKOTA STATON — The Late, Late Show (1957-1991) Golden Classics Series | FLAC (image+.cue), lossless

Singer Dakota Staton's first full-length album was one of her best. She had a hit with "The Late, Late Show" and performed memorable versions of "Broadway," "A Foggy Day," "What Do You See in Her," "My Funny Valentine" and "Mooney." Backed by a largely unidentified orchestra arranged by Van Alexander (with Hank Jones on piano), Staton sounds both youthful and mature, displaying a highly appealing voice on a near-classic set. ANNIE LAURIE — Since I Fell For You : The Essential Annie Laurie (2020) Mono | FLAC (tracks), lossless

Reportedly Dinah Washington's favourite singer, and an influence on vocal stylists like Billy Wright and Joe Williams, ANNIE LAURIE was one of the outstanding R&B/Jump Blues singers of the immediate post-WWII era.

She recorded prolifically in the late 40s and early 50s, for six different labels, enjoying both R&B and crossover Pop success, before suddenly retiring from singing in 1962, to devote her life to the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Her biggest success - and her signature song - was 'Since I Fell For You', in 1947, following which she also registered with 'Cuttin' Out', 'I'll Never Be Free', 'It Hurts To Be In Love' and 'If You're Lonely'.

She also enjoyed regional success on the Cashbox New Orleans 'Hot' Chart with releases like 'Annie's Blues', 'I Ain't Gonna Let You' and 'My Rough And Ready Man'.

This compilation presents the very best of her recordings between 1947-62 and is a must-have for collectors as it includes sides which have never previously appeared on CD, notably her very first release, 'St. Louis Blues'. Jasmine

NANCY HARROW — Secrets (1991) FLAC (tracks), lossless

Nancy Harrow is in excellent form throughout this continually colorful set. The inventive jazz singer is joined by pianist Dick Katz, bassist Ray Drummond, drummer Ben Riley and occasionally Clark Terry on flugelhorn; C.T. also sings on a humorous "Hit the Road, Jack." The repertoire reaches back to the 1920s/'30s (including "Guess Who's In Town," "Pennies From Heaven" and "Someday Sweetheart") and also features some veteran obscurities and five recent Harrow originals. One of Nancy Harrow's best later recordings, the CD does an excellent job of showing off her talents. Scott Yanow
