JOHN SURMAN — Saltash Bells (2012) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

I first discovered the beauty of Surman's Jazz when I bought a copy of A Biography of the Rev. Absalom Dawe. Essentially, his performance on that LP was nothing short of brilliant. On his Saltash Bells LP he again applies his multi-instrumental, composing and performance skill with true aplomb. Borrowing a quote from Wikipedia, "This "extraordinary solo recording" Surman's "beautiful blend of reeds and electronics summons the mists, moors and mysteries with hauntingly evocative style"" Surman's musical interpretation of the Saltash Passage on the River Tavy conjures the many moods, shifts and subtle drama this area of England possesses. For me, the buy in comes easily. I simply close my eyes and allow the music to envelope me... Loving the deftly crafted songs to tell me their individual story as I, then, imagine the place, the time, the totality of the composition. My suggestion: Surman's style of Modal Jazz is pretty awesome. The atmospheric nature of his recordings makes for an often soothing listen. Consider exploring his entire catalog. For me, this one's a keeper. You may well agree. Cheers. Gary Figueroa

ANOUSHKA SHANKAR — Rise (2005) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The daughter of Ravi Shankar moves far from the tradition on her fourth solo album, using her considerable sitar skills (understandably, she'll never be her father's equal, but who ever will?) as just part of her arsenal on an album that strives hard to blend the past and cutting edge. It succeeds in part, as on "Solea," where Indian and flamenco meet, the two opposite ends of the gypsy road, and discover they have much in common, or on "Red Sun 4," where the Indian tradition of vocal percussion called konnokol seems as modern as anything to emerge from drum programming. At other times, the album seems to float too weightlessly on a cloud of miasma. "Sinister Grains" is a case in point: it's pretty, and certainly well executed. But when it's over, it's hard to remember, as ephemeral as a pleasant summer breeze. "Voice of the Moon" fares somewhat better, more grounded in its Indian-ness, with an arching melody. But even that's countered by the album's opener, "Prayer in Passing," which seems too much like an alaap without a theme, a prelude that leads to nothing, form without substance. Shankar uses plenty of programming on this, adding voices (including her own), palmas, piano, guitar, and other unusual textures, which certainly bring variety to what she does. And with "Ancient Lore," the epic (11-minute) closer, she actually pulls it all together (thankfully without the didgeridoo that's there on one earlier cut), the judicious use of reverb giving a certain ambience, and a reminder that she's a sitar player whose roots lie on both East and West and she improvises. Rise isn't perfect, by any means, but it's the first step on a new path. Chris Nickson

HOLDSWORTH · PASQUA · HASLIP · WACKERMAN – Blues For Tony (2009) 2CD | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

When drummer Tony Williams died of a heart attack on February 23, 1997, at the relatively young age of 51, it was a tremendous loss for straight-ahead post-bop and hard bop as well as for fusion. Williams had numerous acoustic jazz credentials (including his contributions to Miles Davis' legendary mid-‘60s quintet), and his band Lifetime was one of the most important fusion outfits of the ‘70s. The late drummer's fusion side is what electric guitarist Allan Holdsworth, electric bassist Jimmy Haslip (of Yellowjackets fame), keyboardist Alan Pasqua, and drummer Chad Wackerman pay tribute to on Blues for Tony, an excellent two-CD set that was recorded live in 2007. Forming a quartet, the improvisers remember Williams not by trying to sound like a carbon copy of Lifetime, but rather by celebrating the overall spirit of Williams' fusion output. Holdsworth, in fact, worked with Williams when he replaced John McLaughlin as Lifetime's guitarist in 1975; it was a brief association (Holdsworth left Lifetime the following year), although certainly a noteworthy one. And like Lifetime, this quartet (which performs mostly material by Holdsworth and Pasqua) demonstrates that being influenced by rock and funk and making extensive use of electric instruments doesn't mean that a group cannot maintain a jazz mentality. In fact, Blues for Tony thrives on a jazz mentality. Improvisation and spontaneity prevail, and even though Blues for Tony is by no means straight-ahead acoustic jazz, the quartet's amplified performances can easily be described as "the sound of surprise" (to borrow a term coined by the late jazz critic Whitney Balliett). These performances underscore the fact that -- contrary to what myopic jazz purists and bop snobs would have us believe -- fusion is not pseudo-jazz. Fusion is authentic jazz, but it's authentic jazz for people who also appreciate rock and funk. Blues for Tony is an album that fusion lovers shouldn't miss. Alex Henderson

The overall recording of the Orglwerke by Dupré by Ben van Oosten is just great. Not only the game, but also the elected organs are very suitable for this project. On this CD you can hear one of the most beautiful organs of Paris, a very colored instrument. jpc.de

Ben van Oosten’s consistently reliable, increasingly valuable Dupré survey continues with the 24-pat, 47-minute Inventions Op. 50, a quietly virtuosic display of contrapuntal prowess that accumulates. prestomusic

Never before have "Les Nymphéas, op. 54" been heard outside of Meudon, Marcel Dupré's home town.

Ben van Oosten presents this extraordinary composition on Vol. 11 of Dupré's complete organ works not on the composer's specially built house organ, however, but on the Casavant organ in New York's Brick Church.

Inaugurated in 2005 by Ben van Oosten, the instrument is regarded as an impressive synthesis of French symphonic and American romantic organ building. jpc.de
