PATTI AUSTIN — The Real Me (1988) Two Version | FLAC (image+.tracks+.cue), lossless

And how! Austin tackles standards such as "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and "They Can't Take That Away from Me," and succeeds brilliantly. Her version of Comden, Green, and Bernstein's "I Can Cook, Too" is enough by itself to make this a pick. William Ruhlmann

ROSEMARY CLOONEY · PÉREZ PRADO — A Touch of Tabasco (1960-2010) Two Version | FLAC (image+.tracks+.cue), lossless

On paper, this unlikely pairing of American popular vocalist Rosemary Clooney (who nearly defined the 1950s as a stylist) and Cuban percussionist and bandleader Pérez Prado seemed to be a disaster in the making. The end result is quite the opposite. Recorded during two sessions in July and August of 1959, this is simply one of the loveliest albums in either artist's catalog. The music is lively and colorful but retains Clooney's smooth and mellow character, and Prado's trademark arrangements and experiments with percussion, texture, and harmony. Apparently, Clooney had some trouble with pronunciation initially, but was coached by her husband, Puerto Rican actor Jose Ferrer (who wrote the original album's liner notes) and became a quick study. This merging of Latin and American standards is a tour de force that features some of the hottest session players in the biz including drummers Leo Acosta and Earl Palmer, as well as horn players Paul Horn and Ollie Mitchell. Highlights of the set include "Mack the Knife," "Sway," a pair of Cole Porter tunes -- "Bali Hai," and "You Do Something to Me" -- as well as highly original readings of "Corazon de Melon," "Cu-Cu-Rru-Cu-Cu Paloma," and "Adios."

REBEKKA BAKKEN · WOLFGANG MUTHSPIEL — Daily Mirror (2001) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

If you found Daily Mirror, the avant-garde jazz song project of singer Rebekka Bakken and guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel, to be just a bit too abstract, then you might want to take a stroll through this album, which consists of sometimes drastically remixed versions of songs from Daily Mirror. Many of these reworkings are no less challenging than the original songs. Ashley Slater and Tom Gandey's treatment of "Wonders," for example, takes bizarre electronic liberties with Bakken's voice and creates a strange digital collage using delay and a cheesy beatbox rhythm; "Emotions on a Lazy Day" is given a trip-hop setting by Gregor Hibe in which Muthspiel's guitar lines are torn to pieces and then thrown into a vortex of jungly breakbeats while Bakken sings sweetly above the fray. "Drawing Lines" gets a jazzy house mix at the hands of DJ Jeremiah, while the "Air of Decay Beatbox Mix" of "Angela" comes out sounding like an outtake from My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. Avant-garde dance music simply doesn't get much better than this. Rick Anderson

SOPHIE MILMAN — Sophie Milman (2006)Two Version | APE + FLAC (image+.tracks+.cue), lossless

Sophie Milman's debut reveals a gifted young jazz vocalist who swings with a surprising degree of maturity. Though born in Russia, she has called Canada home for some time and is joined by some of the country's best jazz musicians. Milman isn't afraid to take a few chances and seems to be quite comfortable with her own voice rather than copying others, as young performers have a tendency to do. Her upbeat treatment of "I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby" is full of spirit, while she's clearly having fun in the somewhat campy 1960s-flavored arrangement of "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." Pianist Bill King (who is also one of Milman's two producers for this project) provides superb accompaniment to the singer in "I Feel Pretty," which evolves from its original setting into a lively bop setting featuring saxophonist Pat La Barbera. Among the newer compositions, Milman excels in her interpretation of the breezy "Lonely in New York'" (briefly showcasing guitarist Reg Schwager and violinist Lenny Solomon), though the bland pop song "Back Home to Me" sounds like something taken from a Norah Jones CD. Sophie Milman clearly has the ability to turn heads in the jazz world; all she needs is the opportunity to be heard. Ken Dryden

RUTH CAMERON — Roadhouse (2000) Two Version | APE + FLAC (image+.tracks+.cue), lossless

On her first full-length album, following the previous year's seven-song EP First Songs, Ruth Cameron continues to take a considered, deliberate approach to standards, backed by a small band anchored by her husband, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Larance Marable, augmented by one of three pianists and usually a saxophone or violin. The title Roadhouse suggests a far more raucous style than the one actually employed here; maybe the album should have been called After-Hours Nightclub instead. The tempos are very slow, the keys minor, and Cameron's vocals are as much spoken as sung. These are calm, quiet performances, which can give the songs an air of restrained passion, especially when the lyric has the complexity and subtext of "Something Cool" and "One for My Baby," the album's first two songs. Not all of the material is well suited to the interpretations, however. In particular, Cameron's reading of "Happiness Is Just a Thing Called Joe" works against the lyric; she may sing that, when Joe kisses her "it's Christmas everywhere," but she doesn't sound like that's anything to celebrate. If her plain-spoken, hold back the emotions approach adds depth to a lightly wistful song like "Willow Weep for Me," it robs feeling from what should be a warmly affectionate one like "My Old Flame." And the album's unrelenting tone is ultimately enervating; if she really performed this material as a set in a roadhouse, she'd likely be performing only to overturned chairs and a dozing bartender by the end. MORGANA KING — Looking Thruogh the Eyes of Love (1981-1995) FLAC (tracks), lossless

Morgana King is definitely an acquired taste. Her semi-operatic vocals, high voice, and dramatic delivery take some time to get used to, though her fans have long gone out of their way to collect her records. This CD reissues a 1981 set cut for Muse. The backing is a bit jazz-oriented, thanks to the presence of guitarist Joe Puma, but the singer is also accompanied on some cuts by a string quartet; Torrie Zito's arrangements fit King's voice well. The better selections include "Time After Time," "I Wished on the Moon," and "Dearly Beloved." Morgana King's followers will enjoy this outing; her detractors will not be persuaded. Scott Yanow

CHRIS BENNETT — Less Is More (1997) FLAC (tracks), lossless

Chris Bennett is a versatile singer whose spine-tingling voice generates soft power. She gets her message across with quiet subtlety and always seems to fully understand the words she is interpreting. Although not really an improviser, Bennett is quite effective throughout this ballad album. Singing some older tunes (including "Isn't It Romantic," "My Foolish Heart" and "Some Other Time") and six of her melodic originals (which are generally pop-oriented), Bennett is featured in several different settings. There are some duets with pianist Eric Doney, a few of the other pieces also use guitarist Wayne Johnson, bassist Cliff Hugo, percussionist Bobbye Hall, flutist Gary Herbig, the tenor of Armando Castagnoli and/or violinist Haim Shtrum (who has a pretty tone), and the singer plays piano on three of her songs. With a few exceptions (such as "Make Me New For You"), the emphasis is on slower tempos, but Bennett's sensuous long tones make the record quite listenable. Scott Yanow

On the surface, this seems to be just another excellent vocal jazz recording by a popular San Francisco-based singer whose best-known longtime gig is the London club Ronnie Scott's. Yet the exotica of Ryan and the music she chooses is so much a part of the story, from her sultry Italian on "Estate" to her crafty Portuguese on Jobim's joyful samba "Anos Dourados." Her bio makes multiple mentions of her multiethnic background -- Mexican, Irish, and French -- perhaps to justify her ability to tackle the foreign tunes. Yet at heart, she's an honest to God jazz singer in the Sarah Vaughan/Betty Carter mode who seems coziest on lush ballads like the title track and fun swingers like "A Sleepin' Bee" and Ellington's "Jump for Joy," which starts as a sparse, stylish duet with voice and John Wiitala's bass before incorporating Allen Smith's playful muted trumpet. Each song has a credited arranger, an obvious ode to the care with which Ryan chose and interpreted this varied material. Although her name is still not on the lips of mainstream jazz fans, Ryan's association here with legends like Toots Thielemans (who adds harmonica romance to tunes like "Estate") and Ernie Watts (whose inimitable tenor infuses three tunes), along with her diverse talents, will help expose her to a well-deserved wider audience. JANIS SIEGEL — A Thousand Beautiful Things (2006) APE (image+.cue), lossless

The ninth solo album by Janis Siegel -- an accomplished leader who is nevertheless most famous for her membership in the vocal jazz quartet Manhattan Transfer -- is something that you almost certainly never saw coming: a collection of modern pop songs arranged in an assortment of Latin styles. Gimmicky? Willfully bizarre? Amazingly enough, it's neither. Siegel's strong, supple voice and her consummate taste allow her to bring something new and often subtly complex to every song, without indulging in unnecessary weirdness. Granted, her gifts aren't always sufficient to redeem mediocre material: Björk's "Hidden Place" gives her very little melodic substance to work with, and it makes for an unpromising opening track. But her take on Nellie McKay's "The Suitcase Song" is much more exciting, and the multi-layered Cuban percussion on "I Can't Help It" is brilliant. Even better is the Colombian harp solo on her rendition of Suzanne Vega's "Caramel," and the multi-tracked background vocals on her arrangement of Paul Simon's "Love" are breathtaking. There are many more such moments on this exceptionally fine album. Strongly recommended to jazz and pop fans alike. Rick Anderson

ERNESTINE ANDERSON — Never Make Your Move Too Soon (1980) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The title cut of this near-classic album became a sort of theme song for Ernestine Anderson, but it is not the only high point. The singer sounds in top form on such fine material as "As Long As I Live," a touching "Old Folks," "My Shining Hour," and "Poor Butterfly." With fine assistance from pianist Monty Alexander, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Frank Gant, Ernestine Anderson is heard throughout in prime form, sounding quite enthusiastic and powerful. Highly recommended. Scott Yanow

REBECCA MARTIN – People Behave Like Ballads (2004) MAXJAZZ Vocal Series | FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

For Rebecca Martin, the comparisons to Norah Jones will be inevitable when critical ears listen to "Here the Same but Different" from Martin's People Behave Like Ballads. The song has the same breezy folk-pop appeal of Jones' hit "Don't Know Why" and Martin's delivery of the song is just as relaxed and carefree. But the comparison is somewhat unfair as Martin debuted her jazzy blend of folk-pop in 1999 on Thoroughfare, three years before Jones's breakthrough. She also worked with Jesse Harris (writer of "Don't Know Why") in the group Once Blue prior to his Grammy-winning work with Jones. In reality, people should be comparing Jones to Martin, but all in music is not fair. However, the folks who have already discovered Martin will be eager to spread the news that her third solo disc successfully refines her style and showcases her talent as a songwriter. People Behave Like Ballads is the appropriate title for Martin's collection as she fills the disc with unhurried songs about people dealing with relationships and their own place in the world. In the beautiful "Lead Us," relationship roles are reversed as the stronger of the two recognizes they have "got a handicap" and calls to their partner to "take the reigns," while ghosts from doomed romances begin to haunt a prospective relationship in "I'd Like to Think It's Coming." These personal explorations are often complex but the lightness in which the music is presented makes them seem simpler than they are. Martin's music leans toward folk but is shaded by jazz influences and a '70s singer/songwriter style, much like the mid-career recordings of Joni Mitchell. In fact, the influence of Mitchell can be heard within "East Andover" and "Lonesome Town" as the tracks sound like quality leftovers from Mitchell's Hejira. These two songs along with the barely up-tempo tracks "Old Familiar Song" and "I'm Not Afraid" provide the best block of music on the disc. But with all of the songs kept at a laid-back pace, at 16 tracks the disc is a little lengthy and the final songs lose identity and begin to blend into each other. Nonetheless, People Behave Like Ballads is an excellent step forward and perhaps the people who lifted Norah Jones to success will discover Rebecca Martin and give her the proper exposure she deserves. ABBEY LINCOLN — The World Is Falling Down (1990) Two Version | FLAC (image+.tracks+.cue), lossless

Abbey Lincoln's first in a series of impressive recordings for Verve matches her unique voice and very credible style with flugelhornist Clark Terry, the altos of Jackie McLean and Jerry Dodgion, bassist Charlie Haden, drummer Billy Higgins and French pianist Alain Jean-Marie. McLean has all of the alto solos and most of the instrumental arrangements were contributed by Ron Carter. Lincoln has always been expert at picking out superior material to record and all eight numbers on this CD are memorable in their own way, particularly Haden's classic "First Song," a French version of "How High the Moon," "Hi Fly," Michel Legrand's "You Must Believe in Spring" and Lincoln's two originals "The World Is Falling Down" and "I Got Thunder." ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY — At Last (1999-2005) Two Version | FLAC 24-44.1Hz + APE (image+.tracks+.cue), lossless

Ann Hampton Callaway came to jazz through a background in cabaret. The rich-voiced alto has a touch of vibrato which she uses effectively. With a fine rhythm section consisting of pianist Ted Rosenthal, bassist Jay Leonhart, and drummer Victor Lewis, she mines the treasures of the Great American Songbook with a personal touch, showing off with a bit of effective scatting in "What Is This Thing Called Love," and delivering a playful "Comes Love" that is complemented by Wycliffe Gordon's gritty, muted trombone, along with a suitably dreamy "Lazy Afternoon." Callaway has a few surprises in store as well. She masters Chick Corea's demanding "Spain" with ease while she uncovers "On My Way to You," a forgotten gem by Michel Legrand with lyrics by Marilyn & Alan Bergman. She proves herself to be a talented songwriter with the soft bossa nova "Save a Place for Me" and the heartfelt "Finding Beauty," both of which add guitarist Rodney Jones and Latin percussionist Emedin Rivera. There are some misfires. Joni Mitchell's quirky "Carey" is an ill fit with the rest of the album, while the dull, narrow range of rocker Stevie Nicks' "Landslide" simply doesn't suit Callaway's rich voice. But these tracks are minor glitches in an otherwise outstanding release.  Ken Dryden

JULIA FORDHAM — The Julia Fordham Collection (1998) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

Julia Fordham has rarely found a song that her voice didn't capture and own. Herein lies a best-of collection of 15 tracks, including some new versions of her classics, a remix of "I Thought It Was You," and two new tracks confirming this assertion. Although other fan favorites are missing, such as "The Comfort of Strangers" and "I Want to Call You Baby," this assemblage of quality music is very well put together. A near-classic collection from an artist in a class all her own. Jaime Sunao Ikeda
