Brot & Honig is the result of five days of work between Evan Parker and the TonArt Ensemble that culminated in an October 30, 1999, concert which this CD documents. Apart from bassist Peter Niklas Wilson, Evan Parker didn't know the TonArt musicians; then again, the 13-piece ensemble had no idea how the world-renowned free saxophonist would conduct the ensemble, since his credentials in that field were less than thin. It turns out that Parker is indeed better off improvising himself rather than conducting other improvisers. Not that the music on Brot & Honig isn't interesting, but it certainly doesn't stand above the average production coming from improvising ensembles and it is not a landmark in the saxophonist's career. The CD contains two 37-minute pieces. "Brot & Honig" is a slow-moving linear number that lacks character. "Syrah & Papidoux" has more contrasting sections and features some nice soprano work from Parker, but it's still closer to a genre exercise than to spirited music. That being said, considering that this presents a very unusual side of Parker's work, Brot & Honig is a relevant release. François Couture
